Title: Christmas Traditions
Post by: Blurr on 2016-11-25 22:52:38
Thanksgiving has come and gone yet again and now the holiday season draws near. What are some of your most beloved family traditions around this time of year? Do you have any? If so what do you do?

Usually on Christmas the family always gets together. :)  We just hang out, open gifts, and have a feast.  I always stay Christmas Eve too, and get a nice meal then too. :)  When we were younger, Dad always read "The Night Before Christmas."  When family arrives, we sometimes watch Christmas movies, such as "Christmas Vacation!"

So the day after Thanksgiving, the Christmas decorations go up.  Christmas tree, Christmas lights.  Stick on wreaths, and of course, some lucky person gets the big red nose for their car.

Last minute Christmas shopping is always a treasured Christmas tradition.  Who wants gift cards and money?!  Always a great gift when you have no idea what to give someone.

Last minute Christmas shopping is always a treasured Christmas tradition.

Seems like a tradition I wouldn't want to keep. ;D

I try not to keep that tradition, but it keeps happening.

My favorite traditions are my moms exclusive holiday cookies. If I knew where any of you lived I'd send you a plate to try for yourself.

Then there was tonight. Every year, the day after thanksgiving, the tree goes up and we decorate it while watching Christmas Vacation at the same time

My family used to all get together. We don't anymore. Because apparently we all hate each other now.

I miss the old days.

The gurl is basically joking about the picture being tilted sideways. :P

For those who don't know, Wayside was a (fictive) school that was mistakenly built vertically instead of horizontally, making it extremely tall.

Yea, was making a joke about the sideways picture haha

Hm, okay. I'd probably link to an imgur album. Since I'd take some from all angles.
But yeah, I have stockings.

Post by: Soda on 2016-12-05 01:44:22
I can probably snap a Christmas tree pic. :)

I also have stockings, but they are mainly for decoration.  I do have Christmas socks with little Rudolph the red nose reindeers on them as well as striped green and red long socks. :D

I had a stocking somewhere... I had two.  But when you pull out the Xmas decorations, sometimes things are missing.  I probably just didn't find them yet.

That sounds a lot like how socks go missing in the laundry.

What do you guys think about gift cards.  If you get a gift card for Christmas to a place you like, are you happy about it?

We got a real one once. It was nice. But we usually use a fake one.

I use a fake year after year.  I love the real ones, they smell great, but they are a mess and when they start to shed or die... it's sad.

I'm actually half-Jewish-half-Christian, so we do both in my house. Our traditions sort of change themselves to match whatever dates Hanukkah tends to fall on, but we always do two things: celebrate Christmas with my mom's side of the family, and have a family Hanukkah party with my relatives on my dad's side. (We also do Thanksgiving w/ my mom's family, which... isn't directly Christmas related. xD)

This year it's looking like we're having our party on the day after Christmas, as Hanukkah starts Christmas Eve.

Yeah, each year we pile into the minivan and go check out Lights of the Delta (http://lightsofthedelta.com/).  It's pretty cool seeing the displays "move", and taking the little ones to Santa's workshop.  Just mind the --

Yeah, I do that.  We do that.  Yes!  Christmas lights are a one time thing each year, unless you have that inconsiderate and annoying neighbor who leaves their lights up all year round because they are like, "That way I don't have to put them up every year!"

Sweet, I've been considering a drone, but you have to have them licensed or something now if they are a certain size.

I got some ammo to go shoot things. It will be a real blast.  They did a real bang up job on getting gifts for me this year.  They had me in their crosshairs and fired away perfect gifts.  Direct hit.

Title: Re: Christmas Tradtions
Post by: 1234 on 2016-12-26 13:19:51
Yes. First, it shows the drone flying around, nothing unusual. Then, it goes over a neighbor's house and into their tree. Then, it shows my unsuccessful attempts to try and get it to fly out of the tree. After that, it remains stuck in it until it stops recording by itself.

Maiden outdoors flight, yes. Put it on top of our car, then flew it away.

"Okay, that's high enough." I made it come down, and it fell on top of the neighbor's roof. Couldn't see it and couldn't move it anymore.

"Oh.... sh!t." I went to tell my parents about it, and as I stepped out of the house, I tried flying it off again, and it worked. :o Go figure.

So I flew it back down, hit the record button, and decided to fly it higher than before. Then after a few seconds, I made it come down, and it disappeared. "OH SH!T SH!T SH!T"

I went running down the street to see in whose yard it landed: THANK GOD it had landed in that tree, or else I never would've seen it. I tried flying it out of the tree, from the sidewalk. Cuz there was no way I was going into that yard, even though nobody was there at the time. However, it didn't work. THANK GOD the occupants returned only a couple minutes later, or else I would've been in trouble. (I still wasn't, though. They weren't mad at me or anything.)

So we managed to get it out, and... yeah. I was more careful next time I flew it. ;)

So yeah. I just explained a whole lucky and embarrassing 30 minutes of my life. ::)

The best way to detect sarcasm, Sparky, is to think to yourself. Would they realistically say that? If it's no, then it's probably sarcasm haha. There's other modes as well, but I find that the best way to tell or not.

I'd say for your classic movies, stick with It's A Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, and at least one version of Dickens' Christmas Carol.  Everyone's got a favorite. I watched a very novel modern telling last year that opens with a kid angrily pissing on Jacob Marley's grave--and just gets weirder from there on. Oh, and who could forget TBS's 24-hour marathon of A Christmas Story--as much a staple of your holly jolly holiday dinner as the turkey and glazed ham.

Now, for animated offerings, you have three staples-- perennial favorite Charlie Brown, The Grinch (Chuck Jones' version), and, of course, Mr. Magoo.

Best cartoon Scrooge that isn't a little white Scottish duck.    ;D

All of those are great choices for sure.  All classics.  For humor, I always found "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" a real hoot!

I love how haunting one car make "A Christmas Carol" as well.  There is child friendly all the way to slightly unsettling.  It's weird to think a happy time of year, Christmas, can have such a dark story tied to it.

Well, if you like a non-traditional Christmas tale with a buff, hard-rocking Santa, try The Santa Chronicles.
Kurt Russell and his real-life wife Goldie Hawn star as Ol' St. Nick and Mrs. Claus--and it was such a hit they reprised their roles for the sequel (https://screenrant.com/netflix-christmas-chronicles-biggest-changes-similarities-sequel-original/).

Now for something a bit more sentimental, try Klaus, a wonderful animated movie about the jolly one's humble origins as a reclusive carpenter, and his partner, a postman in a remote, frozen Northern hamlet, who delivers Klaus' homemade toys to the happy, expectant townschildren. I must admit, this one actually brought a wee tear to my hardened old eye.

And then there's the new Christmas Carol remake I mentioned earlier in this thread. I tried to find that scene where the kid pees on Jacob Marley's grave on YouTube, but they don't have it there.  And, while I have no issue with Bob Cratchit in an interracial marriage, why is she some sort of voodoo princess in this iteration? Cursing? Nudity? And young Scrooge getting sodomized by an evil headmaster during his days at boarding school? That's not so much "woke" as woke up, went to take a leak, missed the bowl and then fell back to sleep sitting on the toilet. Read more about it here (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-7793625/BBC-brings-F-words-urinating-graves-Charles-Dickens-Christmas-Carol.html), but trust me, you'll probably want to skip it.

What is a good overall, underrated Christmas movie to watch?  Hopefully something I've never seen.

Well, if you're looking for some awful cheesy Santa movies this year, try this one:
A nonexistent budget, plot holes galore, ninety percent of the plot having nothing to do with Christmas or Santa (indeed, it's basically a totally different film bookended with the story of Santa taking a wrong turn at Albuquerque and crashing his sleigh on a beach, where he heat-strokes, apparently, and has some real trippy dreams), and a very creepy theme-park mascot showing up to lend a paw make for a very... interesting movie indeed.

I'm also watching a lot of the other kind of bad Santa movies, as in featuring Santas who are evil (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadSanta): Krampus, Santa's Slay, Bad Santa, Letters To Satan Claus, and A Madea Christmas--the last one is a stretch somewhat, as, though not really evil, Madea is loud, ill-tempered, and often very destructive.

I'm also noticing a lot of time-travel and "Groundhog Day" plots turn up in these films, which I shall dissect in a separate post.
