Title: Movies of 2018!
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2018-01-01 12:50:22
A topic to discuss all the hits and misses of 2018!

Will 2018 be a better year then the movie flop of 2017?  2017 was panned internationally as a bad year for movies having the lowest movie attendance in over 50 years!  Will 2018 buck the trend?  Only time will tell!

Welcome to Movies of 2018!

Sort of browsing through the upcoming movies of 2018, not much attracts me.  I didn't know they were making a Tomb Raider movie...

I want to see "12 Strong."

2018 is gilled with a bunch of animated movies that don't look all that interesting to me.

The one coming soonest is by Aardman Animation, the folks who made Wallaces and Grommit.  This new film is called "Early Man."  Doesn't look too appealing to me, but the villain looks interesting. It comes out Feb 16, 2018.

Next is Sherlock Gnomes, a movie nobody asked for... Do people even care about Gnomes?  Why do they keep making sequels to a film no one watched or cared for? March 23.

Isle of Dogs will also come out March 23.  Either you will like it or not.  Hit or miss from this studio and mind.

Next is Duck, Duck, Goose.  Looks run of the mill and uninteresting.  April 20.

Then the big one comes, the one everyone is waiting for.  Incredibles 2.  We still don't know much about it, but just the name and studio it is coming from draws hype.  Pixar released the film Jun 15.

Don't think anyone asked for a 3rd movie, but it looks extremely generic.  Hotel Transylvania 3 comes out July 13.

Teen Titans GO! to the Movies is coming out July 27th.  We know nothing about it, but I am only interested in it because I want to see what they will do and how they will animated it.  We know nothing about this movie, and it came out of nowhere to all of a sudden say they are making a movie.  Cartoon Network doesn't really do movies... so yeah.

Smallfoot is coming out September 14, 2018.  Not much is known yet.

The Grinch is coming up November 9th and it looks very unappealing so far.  Illumination continues to pump out films that are unappealing to me.  Minions... need I saw anything else?

Ralph Breaks the Internet (Wreck-It Ralph 2) comes out Nov 21st.  Cartoon Network will be pleased because they have the show Unikitty and can tie it in somehow.  No opinions on this.  Might be a bad sequel or good.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a dreadful name.  But the teaser we did see looks really neat.  Area of concern is that it is coming from Sony Animation, who has been known to have soulless animated films.  Lets hope they can pull it off.

Only things that seem interesting on that list if the Incredibles 2 to me.

Is that Spider-Verse thing an adaptation of a comic book arc?   Is it in the continuity of the new Spider-Man series, or something entirely different? They're doing their take on the "Spider-Island" arc currently, which I'm reading online to catch up...  Gwen Stacy is essentially played as a composite of Carlie Cooper (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlie_Cooper#"Spider-Island") and Mary-Jane.

(https://images.moviepilot.com/images/c_limit,q_auto:good,w_600/wal0rszgfdfzwhij1jnw/marvel-animation-is-adapting-spider-island-and-it-s-the-perfect-direction-for-spider-man.jpg)

They'll have to tone down the more graphic stuff in the original comics of course, so as not to give kids nightmares.

Title: However, "Black Cat" is still a preppy white girl!

On the subject of superheroes again, anyone seen the promos for the new Black Panther movie?  It's, in the words of one reviewer, "breaking box-office records like a bad habit". They've got cardboard standees in every grocery store and even a line of sculpted 12-in. collectible figures.  I think Hollywood is trying to reach out to the African-American community, which Oscar has snubbed of late, with a new focus on minority superheroes taking center stage--Black Panther, Black Lightning; Miles Morales, the new Spider-Man. Rather than just re-imagining established characters like The Kingpin (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/9c/Dunkenkingpin.png/220px-Dunkenkingpin.png), Fancy Dan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fancy_Dan#Television), or Liz Allen (https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.7Ye7vCOO804BtC_m0cyIdQHaEV&pid=15.1&P=0&w=317&h=187) with shiny new black faces, they're actually looking to characters who were imagined and created as African-American to begin with.  Is this a positive thing and a huge step forward in race relations, or just mindless pandering to the masses by Tinseltown, trotted out just in time for MLK Day and Black History Month?

It's a lot of both.  A lot of pandering and a lot of legitimate trying to develop characters that have been either long forgotten or not considered much in the past.  It will depend who you ask.

Title: Panther pandering
Post by: NostradamusTheSeer on 2018-02-15 18:06:35
Rush Limbaugh just talked about this movie on his show yesterday... pretty much saying the same thing I did.  Brief history: The Black Panther was introduced as a supporting character in Marvel Comics way back in 1966, but didn't see his own title until a decade or so later.  The character enjoyed a sort of cult popularity for decades, perhaps because of the political upheaval of the time. However, Black Panther really didn't come into his own until recently, when he was introduced to the recent Avengers Assemble! series (which is where I mostly know the character from). He's the ruler of a small but mineral-rich African nation, and a metaphor for old-world isolationism trying to exist in a new world where networks have significantly shrunk the global market. He doesn't seem to quite "get" his Avenger teammates, which of late has included a reformed thief (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant-Man_(Scott_Lang)), a hip selfie-loving millennial (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ms._Marvel_(Kamala_Khan)), and a hot-headed little bossy-boots who often vies with him for team leadership (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Danvers) (which doesn't sit too well with a king, taking orders from a woman).  Despite his misgivings and an attitude that can at times come off as cold and dismissive, Panther has proven himself a capable and respected member of the team.

Last week the top three movies were...

Fifty Shades Freed with $38m
Peter Rabbit with $25m
The 15:17 To Paris with $12.5m

This weekend should see a record posting with Blank Panther on all it's hype.

Black Panther is doing well in week two (http://deadline.com/2018/02/black-panther-natalie-portman-annihilation-game-night-weekend-box-office-1202300998/).  I wonder if 2018 will be a bounce back year for the movie industry which had a horrible low last year?

Title: Re: Movies of 2018!
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2018-02-25 00:14:37
Both!  In general 2017 was a bad year for movies.  Lots of poor films, bad performances at the box office, and things got too political.  Hollywood had a record low performing year.
Title: Re: Movies of 2018!
Post by: RainySunshine on 2018-02-25 00:30:27
Two years in a row.  2016 was a horrible year for film (https://www.dailydot.com/parsec/2016-bad-year-blockbusters-superhero-franchises/).  2017 was considerably worse (https://www.newsmax.com/hirsen/hollywood-scandal-box-office-movies/2017/12/27/id/833931/).

I am not sure how 2018 is predicted to be, but based on the near future of films I have seen, nothing looks too promising to bring back up the movie industry.  Some are worried given how "slow" Sundance Film Festival was. (http://variety.com/2018/film/markets-festivals/sundance-film-festival-market-wrap-2018-1202676721/#!)

Sure there will be a few hits, but nothing continual.

I think the Avengers 3 will do much worse at the box office then they expect.  It will be a hit still, but won't perform as good as the previous 2.  Deadpool 2 on the other hand will outperform it's first film, whether it is a better movie or not.

Looks like we may be having a box office soft ball in the film, "Red Sparrow."

It has an average 6/10 rating and has made only $43.5 million.   Jennifer Lawrence stars in the film.  The film cost $70 million to make.  It will pass it's $70 million goal, but I am sure they were hoping for a bigger opening week.

2018 has not had an official BOX OFFICE BOMB yet.  2017 had 4 major bombs and several smaller ones including, "Blade Runner 2049," and, "The Mummy."

I'm about to jump on the Infinity War bandwagon as well. It really lived up to the hype. The movie is amazing. They carried out a few different plots so well and tied everything together at the end. I'm impressed, what can I say.

Welcome to the forum, Sparri. :)

Haven't seen the movie, don't plan too.   I don't know... *shrugs*... all superhero movies sort of just follow tropes and do the expected to me. Even when they try to mix things up and have a bad guy win or something, it is an expected "unexpected." if that makes sense.

Yeah, it's like, "Shoot, they did it better on the cartoon."  I mean, yeah, that's what comic books are-- cartoons in print.  They lend themselves to an aimated medium far more readily. I never really got why adapting comics for live-action ever became a thing.  I mean, some comic-strip characters look utterly horrible played by live actors. Remember Robin Williams in Popeye?  He would have wanted y'all to forget.  Those oversized rubber forearms-- shudder.

I still think they should have let Gwen Stacy live in that post-second sequel reboot film sequel to the first reboot of the initial Spider-Man film series and then done a second sequel to that one where she's now in a wheelchair.  The whole subplot to the film is that Gwen blames Spider-Man for crippling her for life, and while she resents and despises Spidey, she loves Pete.  And the whole guilt of living a double life thing gives him a wicked ulcer.

Wonder when Disney will realize that people are burned out (or getting burned out) of the Star Wars franchise.  Too much too soon.

Reviews from Cannes of the new "Solo" movie have been far from good.

Time for our next BOX OFFICE BOMB!!!

'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Struggling to Hit $100M in U.S., Crashes Overseas (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/box-office-solo-a-star-wars-story-struggles-hit-100m-us-crashes-overseas-1114854).

Disney and Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story is struggling in its debut at the Memorial Day box office, where it's coming in well behind expectations with an estimated three-day debut of $83.3 million-plus and four-day debut of $101 million (numbers will be updated Monday morning). That's even worse than forecasts earlier in the weekend.

The news is grim overseas, where Solo rolled out in every major market save Japan. The movie — which made a high-profile stop at the Cannes Film Festival — is bombing with $65 million, including a dismal $10.1 million launch in China. The global bow is an estimated $148.3 million; many had thought it would fly to $300 million even though the Star Wars franchise has never been an enormous player internationally.

After Disney's very poor showing with "Solo: A Star Wars Movie" which only has made $315.20 million so far, Disneys latest Incredibles II is CRUSHING box office productions.  As of Saturday, it had over $231 million!  Sunday's totals haven't even come in yet!  Even without Sunday's numbers, this would make it the 8th best opening of all time.

Another box office bomb.  MAMMIA MIA 2 is a box office bomb. Source (https://deadline.com/2018/07/mamma-mia-here-we-go-again-equalizer-2-summer-weekend-box-office-1202430132/).

Jurassic World got poor to lower then average reviews but managed to become a $1 billion dollar movie overall.  Major box office success.

Ant-Man and the Wasp has got about 353 million so far since July 25th.  The film made more then it's budget and is therefore a success despite average reviews. This superhero movie craze is nearing it's end I believe.

Incredibles II
has is at $940 million since it's release on June 15, 2018 being a major success for Pixar and Disney.
