Spike's a little devil, but he can also be sweet.  Like Nostradamus said.  He's probably a tween-ish thing.  Whatever is close for a dragon.

The series is presenting us with actual interesting characters.  Spike and Twilight are actually a fun dynamic to watch.  You wouldn't find me saying that with about 98% of fan made comics, or even the MLP show itself.

That look she gives him. Just acceptance of her being "fat".
I also notice a change in Spike's behavior. When Twi was more confident he was fine joking and jabbing at her. Now that she seems to be feeling low he feels bad when he accidentally mentions her weight.
He really does care about Twilight.

His character is evolving.  We are watching her go on a downward spiral.

That expression by Twilight is classic.

Nice plot.  She is drawn to have a nice plot. ;)
