Reports that over 80% of structures have been destroyed in the British Virgin Islands.  The British are sending 500 Royal troops to help with the recovery.  So far we know of 4 deaths on their islands.  They are also being warned of Hurricane Jose which is coming next.

Some imagery of the US Virgin Islands.  Note that hurricane Irma hit these islands as a Category 5.  US Customs and Border Protection is currently helping people there and the first forces to help with recovery.  US Military and Navy is supposedly there too now.

NEWS UPDATE.

Hurricane Irma's core is breaking apart but the eye is still to the east.  The storm is also tracking east away from the western coast and going into Florida's inland.  It is going towards Sebring and Orlando and now away from Sarasota and Tampa.  The hurricane has been downgraded to category 2.

Still the worst damage is in eastern Florida, even though the bulk of the storm hit on the western coast by Naples.

Night has fallen upon the east coast.  Lots of rain and wind. The storm has tracked more west again and is along the western coast.  Currently over Melbourne with a tornado watch over the city.  Storm has sustained as a category 2. Now aiming back towards Tampa, which should see historic levels of storm surge.

Off in the Atlantic is Hurricane Jose which is currently a category 3 which is being monitored.

A reported 3.3 million are without power in Southern Florida.  Reports of very little damage so far on the west coast of Florida.  Only known issue so far is a roof of a business that buckled.  Eastern coast of Florida, and around Miami we are told is much worse, even though the storm didn't directly hit them like the west coast.  Still no word on the Key West.

This hurricane will probably downgrade by tomorrow morning Florida time.  Reports of at least four deaths so far.

We are lucky the storm wavered and went inland instead of keeping it's fuel source in ocean water.

I will do one more update for the day.  Just after midnight in Florida as Hurricane Irma is now a category 2 moving north at a much slower 14mph.  Winds are still in the 100mph range but it will continue to decline throughout the night and into the morning.  The big thing these coastal areas have to worry about on both the west and east side of Florida is the storm surge.  Many of these areas are low lying, and it doesn't take much surge to cause flooding.

The storm will go east past Tampa and west of Orlando slightly based on our latest models.  It will shift to a category one story somewhere near Gainesville as it heads towards Tallahassee and then downgrades again to a tropical storm in Georgia.

Tropical storm warning is in effect for all of northern Georgia and eastern Alabama and around Charleston.  Hurricane warning goes about as far north as Albany, Georgia.  When it hits tropical storm stage, winds will still be in the 40mph to 100mph.

Thank you for keeping us up to date.  Thankfully it turned out not to be a worst case scenario.

I guess with Fidel Castro gone, there was no one to protect Cuba from Iram's wrath.

...Yes, there really is a famous story of Cuba's late Presidente staring down a hurricane from the balcony of his imperial palace and intimidating the storm into backing down.  Seriously.

Cuba prides itself on disaster preparedness.  I don't know how things fully went down there, but they will certainly tout it as good.

UPDATE: Got some unfortunate news.  Watching the live coverage of the shooting near Spokane, Washington.  It is at a high school out in the countryside, all farmland, and tiny towns.  So it is very unexpected.

The local Spokane County Sheriff's Office just had a press conference stating that three children were taken to the hospital in serious condition but said they will be okay.  The bad news is, we were also told ONE student has died.  We don't know much else and the sheriff said he would have a bigger press conference at 12:15am Pacific time.

A shooter is in custody and we don't know their age.
