What are your top 5 favorite sitcoms?
Sitcom: A show that is on television regularly and that is about a group of characters who are involved in different funny situations (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sitcom).
Any time period. This isn't drama's or reality tv, just sitcoms. Live action. I guess you can include animated sitcoms like The Simpsons and Family Guy or similar if you must.
-
Seinfeld is the only right answer. So it is the only one I'll give.
However, Curb Your Enthusiasm too. Because it's basically Seinfeld on HBO with more Larry David.
-
^ Lol! You got it!
To me it is this.
1. Seinfeld.
2. Curb Your Enthusiasm
3. Fraiser
Everything else... I don't know. Maybe "Everybody Loves Raymond" or for nostalgia, the ultra campy, "Full House." But I can't really pick a top five. What I listed as my top three trump all in my opinion.
-
Number one is definitely Seinfeld. It just doesn't get old, and they are still showing ads for it and stuff all the time. Love that show.
Curb Your Enthusiasm is the best modern show there is in terms of "Sitcoms." Nothing else comes close. Lots of trash on the telly now days.
Fraiser is a wonderfully written show. I can't deny that. Kelsey Grammer is a great actor as is the whole cast.
Should I include, "The Office?" I might have too. Last modern show.
-
Fraiser was pretty good. Cheers too, in that vein. I only ever watched them because they were on at like 11 oclock and I didn't have cable growing up.
-
What about Community and Friends?
Not really too big a fan of Sienfeld. Not really funny. Kinda bland sauce, at least to me.

Yep, yep. :) You got it too. There really isn't any modern sitcoms that are that good. Most are so trashy now.
-
nostalgia glasses much lol
-
Cheers was good, but I never got into it.
Friends was lame in my opinion. Never got into it. Way too forced, and so acted, it wasn't funny.
-
Married With Children holds up pretty good too. The humor is a little dated now but it's crazy to imagine it was considered edgy and boundary pushing when it came out.
-
Friends wasn't that great.
MASH?
-
MASH is still a pretty good show. Not in my top five. I would take Hogan's Heroes over MASH.
-
Wasn't too big a fan of MASH, my friend loved it. Had some funny moments, not too big on it.
What about That 70's show?
Malcolm in the Middle?
-
(Just wondering, why is this in the adult section?)
Does something like "Venture Brothers", "Futurama" or "American Dad" count as sitcoms? I know they're animated but they make me laugh a hell of a lot more than a lot of the other crap on TV right now.
-
Married With Children is showing it's age, while other sitcoms aren't. But it was still good.
-
I totally meant to put this in the film section. :P
-
I think they do. APD seemed to discourage, but I think Futurama definitely can count.
And why is this in adult section lol.
I totally meant to put this in the film section. :P
... Because that's an easy mistake to make?? I'm so confused lol. I'll move it for ya old chap though.
-
Never try to look at porn and create a new topic :P

I'm afraid to say yes.... but for now, I don't think so. American Dad might... but the others no.
Lets try to keep it live action for once.
-
Never try to look at porn and create a new topic :P
I know. :-\
-
Well according to the definition you posted, Futurama is a sitcom. And so would say King of the Hill.
-
1. Seinfeld
2. Fraiser
3 Curb Your Enthusiasm
4. The Andy Griffith Show
5. Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Fawlty Towers was a short lived sitcom that I loved.
-
KotH was a masterpiece.
-
For Animated Sitcoms, King of the Hill tops my list.
-
What is Koth?
-
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is the best thing. Ever. :D
-
Oh, King of the Hill.
Lol! That was my fav animated sitcoms for sure. Nothing comes close. Simpsons can be okay.
-
Always Sunny is pretty damned good too. It's almost too goofy to be a sitcom though, least how I look at it. It feels more like live action Aqua Teen a lot of the times.
-
So lets see, for animated I got...
King of the Hill
Bob's Burgers
Not sure what I would do next.
-
Remember, "Home Improvement?" Ha ha! Ehhh, not in my top five, but I just remembered it.
I really know Full House wasn't all that groundbreaking, but I still like it a lot. I think it is based purely on growing up with it.
-
I could never into those family ones. Full House, Home Improvement, Step By Step, Family Matters, etc. They always felt so forced even when I was kid.
Simpsons was the only one I liked, which is funny to think of how 20 years ago it was in the same relative category. It's changed a lot since.
Animated top 5 would be:
Futurama
King of the Hill
American Dad
Bob's Burgers
Venture Brothers
-
I remember Home Imrpvoement.
I have to mention the classic that is the "Golden Girls." Classic. Not in my top five, but a classic.
-
Animated for me would be...
King of the Hill
Bob's Burgers
Futurama
Venture Brothers
The Simpsons
-
A lot of the family sitcoms were super forced and quite lame. Full House was, definitely. But I still liked it. ;D
Friends also always came off as really forced and not that great, yet many people like it.
-
Scrubs, The Cosby Show, Happy Days, My Name is Earl, Three's Company...
None of those are in my top ten, but just listing some more.
-
Parks and Recreation was pretty good, but not top five material.
-
We all know the best of all time was, "General Hospital."
j/k
-
I'm pretty sure that is a soap.
-
I know. ;)
-
The show about nothing. Seinfeld is number one for this guy.
As for the other top one's, I need to think more about that.
-
Parks and Rec was only good when Chris Pratt was on camera.
-
It's funny how many people agree that Seinfeld is a great show. You can go to anyone on the street, and they all just love it. I still love it. I could sit down and watch it anytime, more then any other show.
-
Funny how Pratt went from being an overweight slob, to becoming a "handsome" hunk for the women to adore after.
-
I know quite a few people who hate Seinfeld. I live with one of them.
Nobody's perfect, afterall XD
-
That is the the magic of Seinfeld.
-
Time to find a new roommate.
-
The Office, the US version, is that in anyone's top five?
-
The Office was good, but it stretched a bit too long in the later seasons. I think that prevents me from putting it in the top five.
-
I have an irrational dislike of Steve Carell so I can't watch it.
-
The Office was unique and groundbreaking at the time. No one had done a sitcom like that from that perspective, and the "live lazy" camera movements. It was fun, but not in my top five.
-
Great show, but maybe top ten material.
-
Hmmm. I am debating if it is in my top five or just outside of it.
-
If you include animated sitcoms, that might alter some people's top fives.
-
Why separate them. Afraid the animated ones would push Seinfeld out of the number one bracket lol.
-
It's funny how many people agree that Seinfeld is a great show. You can go to anyone on the street, and they all just love it. I still love it. I could sit down and watch it anytime, more then any other show.
I don't like it lol.
I think it's a lot of people say it's the best because it was one of the firsts. Even if other ones do some things maybe *gasp* better lol.
-
You just don't like it, that's fine LP.
But people love Seinfeld.
If I included animated sitcoms, the first one would probably come in my fourth place.
-
Okay, so if I include animated sitcoms I would have a list like this.
1. Seinfeld.
2. Curb Your Enthusiasm.
3. Fraiser.
4. King of the Hill.
5. The Office.
-
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I am not sure. Seinfeld would be in my top five. I need to think of some others. I think Everybody Loves Raymond is in my top five too.
-
Sitcoms huh? Alright then.
Number 5: Two and a Half Men
I started watching this one back when I Was just a little kid and I don't know why but it instantly made me laugh the first moment I saw it. Truth be told tho, I stopped watching it after the third season Ashton Kutcher took over for Charlie Sheen. But that's because I didn't think there was really anymore they could do with it. The show wasn't the same without Charlie there and everyone knew it.
But that being said. Charlie's character in the show had his moments. I actually thought he was going to go through with getting married and settling down at one point. In fact they go almost two whole seasons with him being involved with, and engaged to the same woman. And this was near the end of his run on the show. After they broke up I kind figured what was gonna happen. More one night stands and sex puns. And....yeah thats what happens. Hell even the main kid on the show left not long after Charlie did. After that, I pretty much knew the show I once knew was officially over. But even with all that, it still holds a place in my heart.
Number 4: Friends
The butt of so many jokes, but this one always makes me smile. I have seen every episode of this show multiple times on netflix with no regrets. It SCREAMS 90's at times and that alone reminds me of a simpler time. When Animaniacs was first airing and stuff like that ya know? The cast and recurring characters that you see come back a lot have a charm to them that make you want to see more with whats going to happen to them. The journey through life they all experience together is a joy to watch. You feel with these characters. When they're happy, you are too. When they are sad, guess what? So are you. It has a way of capturing you within the moment and just keeping you there.
Number 3: Malcolm in the Middle
Again I've streamed this entire series multiple times over on NEtflix and for good reason. First off, I love the style its shot in. It's not your typical live action sitcom with the laugh track. It's shot on location, there's no stage laughter, and it's shot in the style of one of those hour long drama shows. That alone breaks the mold of many other sitcoms out there. The main character Malcolm constantly breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience is also a nice unique touch.
Like with all sitcoms, the characters over time evolve. But here's the thing. Not all of them really do. Malcolm throughout most of the show never really changes from wanting to prove to everyone he's the smartest there is, Reese is always a frickin moron, Lois is always angry and yelling, and Hal is always sort of a pushover. And to be honest, I kinda like it that way. If Lois wasn't always yelling or angry for example, I think the show would have lost some of its charm. But its balanced out by having some characters who DO evolve like Francis and Dewey who grow more responsible and talented as the show progresses on.
Number 2: The Big Bang Theory
I know some people don't really like this one but I find it hilarious for so many reasons. The main one of course being the character Sheldon. Just the way he acts around everyone. Coming off like a jerk but not knowing that is what he is being, its actually really funny. Funnier than I thought it would be.I Thought it would get old really quick. But new episodes keep creating new ways for it to happen.
The setting is pretty interesting as well. You don't see many sitcoms out there revolving around a group of nerds who were tortured in their youth but grew up to become successful scientists. The way the characters have evolved over the past ten years is really a trip itself if I do say so myself.
And number one................How I Met Your Mother
The writing for that show is just so frickin genius at times it makes me kneels over laughing every time. the running gags are perfectly spaced in between episodes and seasons, the characters are funny, yet relatable, it knows when to be funny and when to be serious. The cast tho. The frickin cast and their delivery. That is one of the main things about it. I just love how they all act as a group. I have no problem believing these 5 people are actually just friends having drinks together or just hanging out together. It's just............perfect.
We see these characters go through so many things together. Life, death, harsh reality, love, heartache, new life and so many other situations that so many people seek answers to how to deal with it themselves. I learned a lot of how to be a good person from this show and I take its teachings with me. It also has one of my favorite quotes of all time.
"Sometimes things have to fall apart to make way for better things."
I love that line. I want it printed out and framed. Because as much as it sucks, its true. There will be times when shit happens and it feels like something is about to break. But a lot of those times, those things HAVE to break. It means you have to move on and let something new and better come along. You might miss what was there before sometimes but the next thing that comes along will have you smiling a lot more than the previous ever did.
And there you have it. My top 5 sitcoms.
-
I forgot about HIMYM and Big Band Theory. Unfortunately HIMYM's ending really let me down :/
But otherwise, freaking fantastic show.
-
^ Nice detail there, Blurr.
-
That was a nice description on everything there, Blurr.
-
1. Fraiser - I know this show was not a top pick for some, but I loved the characters and writing and it was more a "smart persons" show if that makes sense. I always loved it, and loved the performance and family building in this show. It all came down to love, and the ending made me tear up.
2. Seinfeld - What can I say? This show is always perfect for a great laugh.
3. Everybody Loves Raymond - Love the characters and silly scenarios. Probably my favorite characters were Raymond's Mom and Father. Such a fun show.
4. The Office - Loved the characters and it was great to watch them grow together and apart. Lovely series and funny.
5. Drake & Josh - I feel like a child for saying this, but I watched this growing up and always loved this show. Those two were great working off each other. I know it is super cheesy, but my favorite teeny-bopper sitcoms for sur.
-
Nicely done, Smiles.
I remember Drake & Josh. I wonder if it would hold up if I watched it again today.
-
It would probably seem very immature now. ;) Not that some of these shows aren't just as immature. ;)
-
It's not like we are picking shows like guilty pleasure iCarly.... or some new trash on Nickelodeon.
-
iCarly was fun.... uh....
Where's my manly shaver?
-
It's in the trash with your manhood.
-
Drat! I was too slow.
-
I liked iCarly, but the adults were dumb as bricks and the kids became brats as the show went on.
-
I have talked about the pitfalls of iCarly before. I liked it, but it was going into dark waters fast.
Drake & Josh was a much better show. Didn't fall into those sam pitfalls as iCarly did.
-
We could always push for milk toast like "Full House."
Anyone watch, "Fuller House?" I have a friend who swears by the new one saying it is great.
-
Haven't seen the new one.
-
Unless it's a scheduled show on tv, I won't see it. Don't have any fancy Netflix or PS4 TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire, etc.
-
I'll have to watch it some day then. See if nostalgia hits me in the gut.
-
Crazy Steve.....hehe.
YOU ATE MY ENCHILADA!
-
I used to like Drake & Josh. I was in that age range at the time that I was a target demographic I think.
-
Here's my top 5 sitcoms(although I do like more than 5 lol)
1. The Big Bang Theory
2. How I Met Your Mother
3. Night Court
4. Everybody Love Raymond
5. I Dream of Jeannie
-
Oh, a funny sitcoms-y thing is "Angie Tribeca (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angie_Tribeca)."
Snmm01 posting, "Night Court" reminded me of this for some reason.
-
Anyone mention Saved by the Bell?
-
That was a good one, it would be in my top 10.
-
That 70s Show?
-
I mentioned that one earlier yeah.
-
Ooooohh That 70's Show is hilarious as well.
-
I always really enjoyed the smarts and wit in Fraiser. I felt it was really well written.
