Great idea for a topic man!  Lets get our hands greasy with this.

Loving what the Mopar guys have been up to with their SRT branded vehicles.  Got to be careful not to devalue the SRT name though.  So far it is so good.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-07-23 20:51:33
I agree.  It has been nothing but success so far.  Not to mention the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Trackhawk and the recent Hellcat Charger and Challenger.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: RainySunshine on 2017-07-23 20:52:58
I mean I love those Dodge products too, but they really need to make vehicles the average person can buy too.  They've lost the bread and butter besides the Caravan and Journey which still exist.  Chrysler only has 3 products right now, the Pacifica, 200, and 300.  They need to give these brands more vehicles to sell to people.  Not repackaged more powerful vehicles.  They need sales.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-07-23 20:54:03
Chrysler is trying to be debt free by 2018.  So they are making tons of money on Jeep's and Ram's.  They've stopped focusing on cars and will focus on SUV's and crossovers.  Hence why they stopped producing cars for Dodge and Chrysler that are new.  Just continued tweaks.  Making powerful cars is cheap compared to making a whole new car.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: RainySunshine on 2017-07-23 20:54:36
But they still need new vehicles.  You can only put lipstick so much on a Charger that is now 15 years old.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-07-23 20:55:54
True, very true.  They are stretched thin and focusing a lot on Alfa Romeo.  The hope is the chassis's that are used for the Alfa's will be used on future Dodge and Chrysler products.  They are just trying to keep the Dodge and Chrysler name relevant.  Dodge has the powerful cars making headlines, and Chrysler has the top of the line, award winning, Pacifica.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion

They need an SRT Pacifica. ;)

I hope the Alfa stuff can be used, otherwise those two storied brands could be outdated and left with nothing while everyone else moves on.

Chrysler/FCA is one of my favs to follow.  Always the under dog doing their own thing.

I've been a GM guy myself, but I think Mopar is one of the most fun brands out there.

I found it interesting too Mercedes made a truck, teased it to everyone then said the US won't get it.  The US is the biggest pickup market... WHY THE HECK wouldn't they sell it here?

Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: RainySunshine on 2017-07-23 21:03:33
They could have from the beginning made it meet those standards.  They choose not to early on.  It was a dumb move by Benz.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-07-23 21:04:04
I agree, it was a dumb move by Benz not to bring the truck here.

Don't forget though, the truck is a heavily modified Nissan Frontier.  Mercedes doesn't want people to know that.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion

Frontier, the worst small truck on the market.

Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion

Not a fan of Tesla's designs.  The Model S was great, but the rest are all getting bland and kinda ugly.  The Model S looks dated already.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Wolfwood on 2017-07-23 21:05:52
Tesla's, meh.  Great tech for the future, but a sterile brand with no emotion or depth.  Just overpriced devices.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-07-23 21:06:21
I don't get Tesla's model nomenclature.  Model S, Model X, then the Model 3?  Weird...
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-07-23 21:06:51
I'm curious how quick the Model 3 is and what the reviews of it will be.  If it is good, we may see way more Tesla's around.

I don't like the headlights of the Model 3.  Looks goofy.  Also don't like the no grille.

Nice to see Genesis trying to make it's mark in the luxury market.

Good mix of car news.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-07-23 21:08:11
Genesis will find their place eventually.  Just like Infiniti, Lexus, and Acura all had to do at one time.  Genesis is Hyundai's answer to those brands and luxury car makers.

Kia Stinger! That looks like a neat car so far.  I bet it will have numb steering.  Seems all the Korean cars have that issue.

Electronic steering is classically boring and numb.

The new Buick Regal GS looks pretty nice with 310hp.  Shed away the old person car stereotype.  It looks subdued and sporty.  Very European.  (Yes I know it is a rebadged Opel Insignia).
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Wolfwood on 2017-07-23 21:10:17
Not sure how long GM has a deal with Opel for future Buick's.  GM should thank them for the ever popular Buick Encore which is an Opel Mokka.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-07-23 21:10:42
GM has a fairly long term deal to get Opel to continue producing Buick's for them.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: RainySunshine on 2017-07-23 21:11:11
It all depends on the tires and how well the Regal's suspension is it if can truly be a sports sedan.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Wolfwood on 2017-07-23 21:11:45
My guess is it will be a quick sedan, but not a sports sedan.  Very few sports sedan's recently.  Even Ford's Fusion Sport wasn't that sporty.  Lot of power, but bad handling and slow.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-07-23 21:12:43
Very few sport sedan's at a good price.  You can say.... well.... the Mazda6 has good handling but slow as a snail.  The Chrysler 200S is very quick and great handling, but good luck trying to find a 200S.  Everyone picked them up and held onto them.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: RainySunshine on 2017-07-23 21:13:16
The 200S was a very nice car.  Shame how it got the short end of the stick in terms of longevity.  I bet the 200S will be a collector car someday.

I don't like the front angle of that new Accord.  I do like the back and side angle.  But Honda is making some ugly designs, like Toyota.  Both very ugly.  The new Honda Civic is a mismatch of just random stuff everyone.

Hey car experts. How would you compare the new Hyundai Ionic to the current Prius? Is one better to buy?
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-07-25 17:05:47
Design wise the Hyundai is nicer. Fuel efficiency is negligible in difference. I would personally take the Hyundai.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: RainySunshine on 2017-07-25 20:37:24
The Hyundai gets better gas mileage.  Neither car will be engaging to drive most likely, but I doubt you care about that. ;)

What I did was compare the base models of each car.   You can edit the field for yourself, but here is how the Ionic compares to a Prius by numbers alone.

You need to test drive them to see which you like most, Smiles.

I find it interesting how Hyundai wants to jump in the light truck market.  Unless they do an amazing job, I think it will be hard for them to find a following.  It was be ultra niche like their already weird Hyundai Veloster.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-08-22 16:35:30
They would want to aim this pickup to be practical and be a soft ball throw at the pickup segment like the Honda Ridgeline.  It definitely cannot compete with the Ram, Ford's and GM's of the world.

It would be a light truck, and I would say it couldn't even compete with the Tacoma or Colorado.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-08-22 16:37:02
Super light.  I mean, there is no way I can view the name Hyundai with a tough truck.  This would be al lifestyle pickup, much like the Subaru Baja was.  Remember that a decade ago?
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-08-22 16:37:36
Wow, I haven't thought of the Baja in years, but I totally remember it.  The successor to the Brat!  Now that was a funky little ute.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-08-22 16:38:16
With Subaru's upcoming 7 passenger SUV, they could make another Baja on that platform... but I know they won't. ;D

A true Brat or Baja successor could be made on the Outback platform or for a Brat sized one, it could use the Forester.  Shame though since no one wants weird little pickups, or so we are told.

Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion

But do Americans?  Naw.

Subaru doesn't have the money for niche things like this unless they can duo construct it like they did the BRZ, or if it will bring back big returns.  They are lucky their raise impreza, renamed the Crosstrek is such a hit.  People will pay stupid amounts more for something that even hints at being a crossover.  The average buyer is kind of dumb.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-08-22 16:42:13
In the gran scheme, Subaru is still a tiny company... though if you live on the West Coast you would never know since that is their biggest market.  All through granola and coffee country from Washington, down through Oregon, and into northern California into San Fran.  Subaru dominates their sales there.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-08-22 16:42:41
Recently Subaru has been seeing gains on the New England front too, equally liberal.

But the rest of the country, Subaru doesn't appeal to people as much.

It is like how Dodge is very popular in Canada, all FCA products, but in the USA, you don't see them nearly as much.  There are a lot, but not the per capita amount in Canada.  It's like every few cars in Canada will be an FCA vehicle, lol.

Unless Toyota wants to evolve their GT86, then no.  Subaru might restyle it a bit, but it will probably be the same car for a long time if they don't end it.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-08-22 16:45:11
Subaru tends to have their vehicles become dated and behind the pack.  Then every ten years, they try to upmarket everything to compete, then fall behind again.  Small car company woes.

BMW and Mercedes are becoming quite sterile, but there is still soul in their performance cars.  Mercedes has been doing a better job lately on the performance front.

It's true!  Think of the new BMW 3 seres that costs $60,000 for a fully loaded car, but it comes with a 4 cylinder!  The 5 Series is the same way!  Turbo 4's!

Look at the Alfa Guila TA which can be had with a turbo 4 instead of at least a V6!

Engine downsizing is the current trend, but luckily, engines are getting better and providing better power with less, and better economy.  Fact of life.

Okay.  Bare with me here.  The new Focus ST has about 230hp and does 0-60mph in about 5 seconds.

The 80s Buick Grand National had 210hp and did 0-60mph in about 8 seconds.

The Buick had a V8 and the current Focus has a V4.

Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion

.....You make your point.

I am just trying to say how wimpy it sounds.  A 4 cylinder doesn't sound nearly as good as a 6 cylinder, and an 8 cylinder is boss.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-08-22 16:52:07
Oh trust me, I totally know what you are saying.  But we will just have to accept the downsizing, just like we've accepted a 4 cylinder Mustang and the disappearance of manuals.

I did have fun!  Lol!  What a silly movie!  How did the car go flying ramping off that Bug?  How did it even do that in the first place?  Should of just hit it.  Then it explodes!  Lol!

Also that one car got hit and just deteriorated!  Lol!

The ending was ridiculous.  The car also just random caught on fire?  lol.  Wut?

Equally as fun to me!  Gotta love the music playing so silly-ly on the second crash.  Everyone always looks so slimy in 80s movies, lol.

In the one, when the villain is driving away, they then show her car stopped as the bomb goes off!  Why doesn't it go off while she is still moving?
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion

My guess: Blowing up cars while they're moving must actually be more complicated than blowing up a static car. I suppose they didn't wanna go through all the trouble, and opted for a time-saving continuity error.

These movies seem such grade B. ;D

I laughed super hard at the school bus flip over.  How did the bus even get onto the ramp of the back of that dump truck when it was like 5 feet off the ground?  Lol.  Then it was so obvious the bus was ramping from behind the dump truck!  The dump truck didn't even move!  Lol.  So funny, all these.

These are superbly and wildly fun, Numbers!  Really great job.  :)  It looks like they attempted to make some better accidents as the years went on.  My favorite wreck in the latest video was "Future Zone."  First off, the first van explosion and that whole seen was silly.  But my fav belongs to the third and fourth.  I like how that car is conveniently parked in front of where the car flips over so we don't see the ramp.  Then in the fourth accident, if you look behind the "third" wrecked car, you can see the ramp.  But that fourth car flip over is insane!  All those parts flying around.  Superb car wreck!

LOL!  What the heck?!  Off to a silly start as a modified bumper car or lawn mower crashed into another one at 2mph and exploded into a fiery ball of death!

How were the legally allowed to use the car chase from another film?

Hooray!  More ridiculous Bob Ivy!  And I real sign.  Then they hit a pickup and roll over, but at impact, the pickup doesn't even move!

That guy just hit a tow truck and exploded?  What?

The cop car wreck was actually quite good.

Wow!  You found the footage of the truck going off the parking garage!  Nice!  That is so dangerous what he did for that though.

From what I've heard, the maker of Gone in 60 Seconds (the "Halicki" I mentioned) and director Ulli Lommel personally knew each other. They probably made a deal of some kind.

The theme to a movie called "The Delta Force". I posted it in the movie soundtrack topic sometime ago.

I am not commenting on whether I found previous Toyota Camry's attractive (they weren't, lol) and the Honda Accord looked alright, but in both cases here, I think their new volume models shown below don't look right or that good.  What is with the massive grilles now that look like vacuum suckers?  I'm not talking about the rest of the car, just the front end grilles.  The Camry will have two grille's depending on if you get the volume model or the "sport (not really a sport sedan)" model.

HONDA Accord

TOYOTA Camry
(http://st.motortrend.com/uploads/sites/5/2017/06/2018-Toyota-Camry-XLE-front-three-quarters.jpg)

Thoughts... and between these two, which do you all like better?
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Grapefoot on 2017-09-03 18:03:15
I think the Toyota had a better generational leap then the past one.  I do not like the lower grille.  Way too wide and long, like a baleen whale's teeth.  Don't like how the side looks either.

The Honda Accord went from a fairly unoffensive car to a design that is more polarizing and I think this generation was a step backwards in terms of front end design.  The rest of the car, they seemed to employ that new Civic language into it, and it looks okay.  But from the front, it looks worse in my opinion.

Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-09-03 22:33:13
It is hard to say.  The new Camry looks a lot like an Toyota Avalon now.  This will make it harder to tell the difference between the two.

Some parts of the Accord I like, and others I don't. They are dropping their awesome V6 for two turbo charged 4's, which saddens me.    The new accord looks more like a stretched hatch or coupe, very sloping like the new Civic.  On the C pillar, at the back window is a silly piece of triangular chrome to make the cabin windows look more flowing.  It's silly. I don't like the grille at all.

Not a fan of either one in this case.  The Camry's lower grille is yuck. I might choose the Accord.  I would have definitely choosen the past Accord from the previous gen.

Totally been following it.

If Honda can make an affordable and simple EV that anyone could buy, it would revolution the electric car market.  Simple, back to basics, like the original Civic.

Yes others have made EV's and even made affordable ones, but Honda could take this to a new level if done right.

Yeah there was a lot.  The biggest update was the JEEP GLADIATOR pickup.  That will be a huge success most likely.

The biggest reveals was the new Ram 1500, Ford Ranger, new Silverado and GMC Sierra.  A lot of trucks.

Mazda revealed their updated 3 sedan and hatch.

Kia revealed the Telluride.

Honda reveals the new Passport.

Toyota reveals a new RAV4.

In a dumb move in my opinion... but probably a smart move financially... (because people will buy it).

Ford has made a new product under the MUSTANG name.  It's not the new Ford Mach E.  It is the Mustang Mach E.  But what makes this Mustang different from the usual pony car pretenses is that this.... this is a Mustang crossover.  :P  Yuck!  But with people supposedly turning from the classic car design and going to bulkier, heavier, high riding crossovers.... I guess people will buy this?

It's still two years out.  2021 is when Tesla wants to start delivering.  So they will certainly morph this design somewhat.  I'm amazed at it's towing of 14,000.  I just wonder how much the battery will degrade and mileage shrink when towing and using this truck as a truck.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Heavy-Chevy on 2019-11-24 17:11:36
It might not be the prettiest looking vehicle, but a towing capacity of 14,000 lbs isn't half bad.  And at $40K it's in the same general price range as some heavy duty trucks.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: Grapefoot on 2019-11-24 17:12:58
We all know they can say it starts at about $40k, but you will be hard pressed to find one at that price.

Just like it I wanted to find one of those silly $9k Mitsubishi Mirages, I'm not going to find one. ;)  An no... I wouldn't want one.

Anyone want to discuss the Mustang Mach E (https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ford-mustang-mach-e-shelby-performance-specs/)?

I understand the need to go where people are spending money in the crossover market... but is anyone sickened by a Mustang branded SUV?  I know Porsche people were the same way and Jaguar folks when their brands made crossovers.  But now those brands' best selling vehicles are their crossovers.  They keep the money flowing so they can make their E-Types or 911s.

I was one of those who felt kind of weird when Porsche and Jaguar entered the cross-over market.  But at least in both of those cases, they built new models from the ground up.  But Ford trying to rebrand the Mustang name on a cross-over is just dumb.  I get it that cross-overs are where the money is but can't Ford at least come up with an original model instead of trying to piggyback off a name that's already strongly associated with compact sports cars.
Title: Re: Redline Automotive Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2019-11-24 21:41:10
Ford making a Mustang SUV is just dumb.  Maybe not money wise, but brand reputation wise it is.  It lowers the Mustang name.

But Ford has done a lot of poor choices.  Look at the half baked new Ranger or the EcoSport.  They blundered the release of the new Explorer with all the tooling and quality issues.

About the only thing they've done right the past three years is the new Expedition.

But if people buy the new Mustang Mach E, it won't matter what we and enthusiasts think.  It will have done what Ford wanted.  It will have made good money.  And you bet there are going to be some soccer Mom's who will want the Mustang name, but be able to sit above other cars...

Originally SUVs were popular for actually going off road.  Then it became just having a commanding view over traffic.  Now if all traffic is SUVs... will we make something taller?  The driving force by over 80% of SUV sales is for women.  They have led the driving forces of sales changes in cars the past thirty years.  It started with the minivan, then the SUV, and now the crossover.

You are right on pretty much your entire paragraph.  The transitions from cars to SUVs isn't exciting to me.  I don't look at a Ford Edge Sport and think it's some exciting sports vehicle.  I look at a Dodge Challenger and think, wow, cool! It's a sports car.  SUVs don't do it to me... well, I do appreciate the Jeep and Dodge Durango SRT vehicles. :)

For so long Jeep has dominated the market it has cornered with the Wrangler.  They've had no direct competition.

Now comes Ford who just revealed their Bronco.  It too will come in a two door and four door model.  It also allows for doors and the roof to come off.  Ford appears to have gone ALL IN to compete against the Wrangler.  Will it succeed?

But hopefully this will help Dodge and Chrysler get NEW product.  Stop spending money on Maserati, Alfa, and Fiat.  They make up next to no sales.  Less than 5$ of FCA sales combined. The money comes from Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram. All the American brands.

^ The fact that they pulled the best selling Dodge Caravan and the good selling, but dated Journey... and now only have sedans (which others claim aren't selling anymore) is a bad sign for Dodge.  They need new product.  So does Chrysler which is down to the 300 sedan and the Pacifica.

So here's a story for ya. Before I moved down to LA, I used to drive my great aunt around town in her car to run errands. She paid me to do it and it was a nice way to make a little extra cash on the side. But I LOVED her car. It's a 2007 Chevy Impala with very little miles on it. Back before I moved down here it was barely at 40K. But late last year, she moved into one of those permanent care homes since she can't take care of herself anymore. So she ended up just giving the car to me for free. It was so frickin awesome. The car is named Derpy because she gave it to me the day after the series finale and my emotions were high. Here's a picture of it.

It finally hit 50k miles last month. I take pretty good care of it, get it washed, properly tuned and oil changes here and there. But it has developed a problem I can't seem to fix. Whenever I'm driving through city streets and take my foot off the gas, the whole front of the car seems to make a loud creaking noise. I don't know what it could be. I thought it was an engine mount going bad but I tried the same thing in park. No noise. I'm gonna get it looked at whenever I can but lately with work and all that finding time hasn't been easy.

But yeah thats my car and I love her.

^ Congrats on the big roomy Impala! That was very nice of your Great Aunt.  Elderly are the best at taking car of their cars and they don't run them hard. They are comfy cars.  You can sleep in them because they got so much room and be quite comfy.  Keep it clean and good, @Blurr.  It still looks good.  Do you no longer have your Element?

I've heard the creaking noice when letting off the gas can oddly be the emergency brake cable rubbing up against the car's control arm.  It would be a super quick and easy fix if that is the case.  The dealer would simple re-grease it and possible reposition it. Take all of five minutes.  I would bring that up to them before they say things like a TSB replacement or strut replacements.  They might say they should replace the clutch cable too.  But just say the first thing.  It should cost nothing.  Test it, and if it works, you saved a pocketful of cash.

It is official.  FCA and PSA merger finally sealed and done.

Article (https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/16/stellantis-official-fiat-chrysler-psa-peugeot-merge/)

In a new online conference, Carlos Tavares, again reiterated that he didn't want to end any of the brands.  Instead each brand has a new head and he wants to build up all the brands.  PSA's earlier plans to enter the US seem to have halted as they will instead focus on the American brands that have been starved of product, such as Chrysler and Dodge.  Jeep and Ram continue to fund everything for FCA and will have a bigger presence as well. Jeep is planned to have a more global presence.

Depends what you are asking of your vehicles, FoxTail.  They can be very practical. Plus if you live in a snowy region, having the security of 4-wheel drive is nice.  Having extra space for your stuff or family/friends is nice too.

In the same breath though, I loathe how crossovers and SUVs are making the sedan fade away.

They are cheaper, but they do have a lot of unique options.  Jeep has always had tons of options, so now Ford is trying that too.  Jeep has prided themselves for always allowing owners to truly modify their vehicle.  The Bronco and Bronco Sport to a lesser degree will be Ford's first attempt at that.

But here are some other vehicles that will be no more after 2022.

Buick Encore
Chevy Spark (Forgot this existed)
Ford GT (Like the NSX, I thought it was gone years ago)
Fiat 500X (Not that anyone bought them... I can't believe it lasted this long)
Honda Insight
Hyundai Veloster N
Infiniti Q60 (Did anyone care?)
Kia Stinger (Too bad, it was a good car at the end of a sedan era)
Lexus RX L (The stretched version of the popular RX)
Mercedes AMG CLS 53 (Again... who cares?)
Mercedes A-Class (Clearly not the A Class)
Subaru WRX STI (End of an era)
Toyota Avalon (Is this the last big sedan?)
Volkswagen Passat
BMW i3
BMW 2 Series Convertible
Fiat 500L

BMW "Hacked" In Weird Teaser Campaign For Something Called Dee

Dee has taken over BMW's social media accounts to introduce itself, and there's an official website to follow for future updates.  What is Dee? That's a question being asked by folks who follow BMW on social media, because Dee has apparently taken over the company's online presence. It started in the early hours of December 13, and after several posts on multiple BMW social channels, all we can say for sure is that Dee seems polite.

We can also tell you that this is some kind of official teaser campaign for BMW. At first, it had more than a few people wondering if the German brand had actually been hacked. Commandeering multiple social media channels at once would be a tall order, but to erase all doubt, BMW has an official Dee webpage that includes an invitation to subscribe for more updates.  Other then that, we don't know what it will be used for yet.
