Much hype! :D

I don't know what to think, we know so little about it or what exactly it will even look like.  I look forward to seeing awesomely animated ponies.  First non CGI childrens film since I think... Winnie the Pooh or the Princess and the Frog.

Really excited, love how the animation looks and some of the new characters, like that cat one, look pretty cool.  That female villain looks great too!  Love seeing our fav pones drawn so smoothly!  HAND DRAWN ANIMATION GUYS! :D  YESSS!

It has been a long wait, but it has finally arrived and I am still coming to grips with the animation.  Big jump from tv, but still more cheaply done then others I am sure.  But I LOVE seeing hand drawn cartoons again.  This was so refreshing, and I couldn't help but smile from it.  Pretty good mix of CGI too, but some angles looked a tad week.  Looking forward to the story too so far.  Really nice.

We need to revive 2D animation!  Hopefully this will spark something.

Granted, this isn't a super detailed 2D animated movie compared to others.  This is a heavily glorified weekend cartoon, but with still great levels of quality. Nonetheless, I am so excited and thrilled for this!
Title: Re: My Little Pony: The Movie
Post by: Grapefoot on 2017-06-28 18:52:00
Having everything in FLASH lends it a certain uniform consistency. This movie looks like a compromise between justifying the expense via use of hand drawn animation, and cutting down on the expense by use of CGI for other aspects of the film. Hasbro is taking a huge chance on this which is why we should support it all we can.  No companies, not even Disney have supported 2D animators in a long time.  It is a hard, long effort to draw frame by frame cartoons, especially on this scale.  They let computers do the work now, so we really should support this all we can if you like MLP. :)

Can't wait to see this movie.  I can predict already that the movie will be panned for overly used plot line, super cliche, and probably just downright horrible... but you know what?  I am excited for it still!  What do you guys think?

I am really liking how they are drawn.

As for what Silverwing asked, I think the film will garner very average reviews.  It won't strive to be something grand and mainly appeal to the younger audience.  You guys have other opinions?  Clearly I am not jumping on the blindfold hype wagon.

Can't wait.

I hope it performs well in the box office.  I can also see it not recouping it's losses.  I truly hope that isn't the case.  Not only do I want pony to win, but I want hand drawn animation to win and hopefully see a great performance with this film.  If that is the case, others might dab into the waters of hand drawn animation again.

I really hope it is a box off success too.  Worried by it's limited release of only some 2,500 theaters.  It needs more.  But it also means they have less expectations for it maybe?  I don't know.

FIRST ROUND OF MLP MOVIE REVIEWS

There isn't a lot yet, mainly some smaller time reviewers who got early viewings.  Big newspaper reviews will come a tiny bit later.

"Now several years later when the fandom is still surprisingly strong, Lionsgate & Hasbro has released 'My Little Pony: The Movie.' Sadly, this is the best movie Hasbro has ever released.  Rightfully taking every best element from the ‘Friendship is Magic’ series, ‘My Little Pony: The Movie’ is a joyfully inspired TV to film adaptation that brilliantly brings back the magic of what was missing from modern animated cinema: 2D animation." 4/5 (https://www.rendyreviews.com/movies//my-little-pony-the-movie-review)

"Very entertaining adventure with a lot of charm." A score (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLEV9Jch9-E)

"Surprisingly good. Nothing groundbreaking but a damn enjoyable movie that both adults and kids will like." 8/10 (https://www.reddit.com/r/mylittlepony/comments/729owe/my_little_pony_movie_review_spoiler_free/)

"Overall it isn't a deep and mind-blowing piece like some wanted and the plot is kind of recycled but everything else more than makes up for it, and it does earn it's PG rating believe it or not. Also the message at the end is also a bit unconventional for an animated movie. Finally it really feels like a classic hand drawn movie. 8/10" (https://www.reddit.com/r/mylittlepony/comments/729owe/my_little_pony_movie_review_spoiler_free/)

And lastly some brony - "It would be a 10/10 for a MLP episode but is an 8/10 compared to all the animated movies."
Title: Re: My Little Pony: The Movie

Thanks, MasterX.  I want this movie to be a huge success, not only for the fans, but for Hasbro to keep investing in it.

I hope the big time reviews remain positive like these early ones.

Also love it is a return to hand drawn traditional animation.

There are reports of some early showings of this movie in Washington State, Oregon, California, Colorado, and Nevada.  As in they are showing it Oct 5 for the mass demand of bronies?  That's pretty cool.  Release date officially is Oct 6, 2017.

ROUND TWO OF MLP MOVIE REVIEWS

Still early movie reviews.  There are some scathing early reviews, check them out below.  There are also a lot of positive reviews. Current Rotten Tomatoes Score of 70%.

"My Little Pony: The Movie is a candy-colored chunk of pure escapism that outshines the cynicism one might feel for a franchise run by a toy company." - Salt Lake Tribune 3/4

"It's going to leave fans of the series frustrated and everybody else completely baffled." - IGN 3.5/10

"The story, characters, animation, and songs were all great. If you are a fan of the show, I highly recommend it. Even if you haven't seen the show, you might still enjoy it for what it is." - Fandango 5/5

"The animated feature film feels like four episodes of a cartoon strung together. But for fans, it’ll be just right." - The Tacoma Tribune

"The Movie is definitely a hit, as it mixes nostalgic storytelling with modern entertainment, to create a truly magical comedy adventure." - Cinema Blend 3.5/5

"The Movie has plenty to offer viewers of all ages, it does not require prior familiarity with Friendship Is Magic, and it's quite smart." - San Francisco Weekly

"The animated film has what fans of the TV series expect: their favorite ponies on an adventure with occasional songs about friendship and togetherness." St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"I am neither a seven-year-old girl nor a Bronie (look it up), but I can spot a decent film about anthropomorphic miniature horses when I see one." - National Post 3.5/5

"Like its television predecessor, is all dressed up in bubbles and cupcakes and rainbows. But it's so jam-packed with rousing girl power, it passes the Bechdel Test with (literally) flying colors." - TheWrap

"Attention The Emoji Movie: Your status as worst animated feature of the year might well be in jeopardy when My Little Pony: The Movie trots into theaters this weekend." - The Hollywood Reporter

"By the time Storm King growls, "I'm so totally over the cute pony thing," misanthropes might agree. Yet, its sweetness stampedes over the audience's resistance." - Variety

"Some people clearly had a good time making this film. Whether you have a good time watching it depends almost entirely on your Pony love walking in." - San Francisco Gate

"Audiences who haven’t followed the glitter-bomb adventures of bossy bookworm Twilight Sparkle, glamorous Rarity, hyperactive Pinkie Pie, introverted Fluttershy, speed demon Rainbow Dash and country girl Applejack don’t get a helping hoof in understanding the land of Equestria — and audiences saddled with cynicism will have to shake it off by the first chords of the Go-Go’s “We Got the Beat.” - Yahoo

"Most of the film feels like an exercise in creating enough plot to hit the 90-minute mark." - Toronto Star 2/4

"It's always nice when a kid's film aims higher than the bare necessities, especially when it's a beloved property that doesn't have to." - Arizona Republic 3.5/5

"The approach to animated features these days is to create technological spectacle, line up an all-star cast of voice talent and pack the script with jokes for the parents to enjoy. But “My Little Pony: The Movie” zigs where others zag, throwing it back to the old school with its traditional animation and musical structure." - Detroit Free Press

“My Little Pony: The Movie” won’t disrupt the Best Animated Feature category at next year’s Oscars (despite any potential Brony protests), but for a message of friendship, you can do a lot worse." - The Detroit News B score

"There's a lesson in here somewhere. The often self-sufficient and solitary Twilight Sparkle learns the importance of depending on friends and making new ones. Cloying, perhaps, not to mention a little long in getting there. But oh so cute." - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

"In an age of middling, forgettable kid’s movie villains, Shadow stands out as a throwback to the days where magnetic malefactors ruled." - Fatherly B score

"It’s a classic children’s story — parental figures in peril, a misfit group of pals, a hero’s journey and lots of songs along the way to underscore the pertinent message and pad out the running time." Spokane Inland 360

"The pastel prancers in My Little Pony: The Movie strut like 10-year-old schoolgirls, their blow-dried manes and hind-quarter appliques signifying an old-school femininity at quaint odds with other animated grrrl-power heroines today. Unless you’re already a pegasister or a brony, these fillies are an acquired taste." - Austin Chronicle 2/5

Disappointing returns for the movie after week one.  A very LOW $8.8 million return after the weekend.  Came in fourth place.  To me it didn't make sense to relate this movie the same weekend as Blade Runner... but Blade Runner didn't do as good as they thought either.

It is really too bad the film was sort of . . . half-assed in a way to the big screen by Hasbro.  They could have put more into it, but maybe they didn't want too?  Maybe they will be happy with a modest return.  I just feel with as big as MLP is, they could have made this a blockbuster if they wanted to devote the time and money into it.

51% of the viewers are female and 41% are female.  Majority of the people watching thought are over 25 years of age.

I saw two movies over the weekend in theaters to kind of reward myself for getting through the first wave of college tests. I saw the this movie and I saw a movie that had a very limited release time called No Game No Life Zero. It was the first anime movie I've ever seen in a theater. I don't know how many theaters it was shown in but where I live it only seems to be shown just a few days XD The movie honestly surprised me in a good way. I wasn't expecting so many varying feels, both sad touching moments and odd humorous moments :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Raag8InWBVY is the trailer.

As for the MLP movie, unless someone wishes me to say spoilers in my thoughts later, I'll just say what is on my mind about it as a whole and share some links.

1st, the movie I thought was above average =) To me it wasn't anything above and beyond, but it was enjoyable and I was entertained. This shouldn't be a spoiler by now XD but once again the main princess characters, Luna and Celestia, were...kind of useless to be frank.
My favorite character out of the main cast that wasn't a new character was by far Fluttershy. She didn't talk much, but the actions she had I really enjoyed (that gif someone showed here earlier is a great scene and she had a few more scenes that honestly made me laugh out loud :D )
Out of the new characters, I was surprised how much I disliked a few of them that I thought I would have enjoyed, while those I thought I would hate I grew to love XD

Tempest, the pony with the broken horn, appears very early in the movie and it is no spoiler that she is the one that shows power and distain for Equestria's use for magic. When I saw the trailer I thought I would hate her, but by the end of the movie she was my personal favorite out of everyone. The song she sings to someone is awesome. I don't know who the singing voice for Tempest is, but I like the tone of voice and how it changes throughout the song. Here is a link to the song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W599nooue4Y

The character I thought I was going to love was the sea ponies. To be honest, there are two background sea ponies that I adore their designs, but as for the sea ponies as characters and their voice actresses they really bugged me for some reason. I know some people will enjoy them, but I just didn't like them personally. I also did not like the pirate characters but to a lesser extent. They just...felt like they were shoved in as an afterthought. Their voices and designs were nice, but I just felt they were unnecessary.

Best line of the entire movie for me is by a character I thought I'd also dislike but I grew to love his character XD. The odd choice for species aside, the feline Capper is one of the characters that made the entire movie more entertaining for me personally =) He sings a song with catchy music that includes this line at the very beginning.

"You know what? Little cotton candy hair is right." -A great way to describe Pinkie in a nutshell.

The villain characters besides Tempest were...underwhelming, especially compared to the villains of the series. I wasn't expecting the Storm King to be how he was in the movie. I'll just leave it at that. I got exactly what I expected with the sidekick villain for Tempest, her underling. I didn't like him either personally XD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTx7OyIZRFg

Besides characters and songs, here are some of the things I liked and disliked about the movie.

Positive: the backgrounds and the mixtures of different styles of animation. It definitely is odd to take in at first, but it is cool to see what really happens and about halfway through the movie I got use to the changes of animation.

Negative: The pacing is either predictable or odd. Sometimes things move fast and other times things went clunky for me. It may just be me though XD

Positive: Besides those two songs I showed links for, overall the songs were surprisingly very enjoyable. I didn't cringe nearly as much as I expected to. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Twilight recognizes when a song is about to happen and she tries to stop the song from happening...not gonna happen Twi. XD

Negative: Predictable ending. Actually, predictable movie in general to me personally. Not a whole lot surprised me. There were some genuine surprises that I could mention if someone wanted me to say them, but for the most part this movie went exactly like I thought it would go.

Positive: SO MANY UNIQUE FACES! The range of emotions that happened in this movie were stunning. Not just eyes and mouths, but their muzzles, ears, even the nostrils themselves sometimes were shown in either a flaring or a different angle that made the nostrils larger than usual. There is one scene in particular that I loved. The first entrance to a very hot place. You'll know what I'm talking about when the scene begins. The expressions and just how each face looks in general is amazing to me =)

Positive: yeah two positives in a row. There was more good things than bad about this movie =) Anyway, how the movie shows that optimism can be a bad thing sometimes and not be too careless or too careful. Pinkie should've died because of this, and even if this wasn't super highlighted in the movie, I was surprised to see that the movie did mention this even more than once XD

Positive: What you think is the only option left for a best case scenario is never the case. Ever. The movie shows this in a very effective way. Sometimes what you think is the right thing to do is in fact the wrong thing.

Positive: How stress can impact friendship is shown in this movie. Sometimes people do or say something they normally would never say or do just because of stress or expectations.

Overall I enjoyed this movie, but I liked the anime movie I saw more. It may just be my personal views though.

I give the MLP movie an 7.5 out of 10.

I think this comment is long enough *faints*

Has anyone else seen the movie yet and wants to say something about it?

I also really enjoyed your review there, @mysteryserpent. I think it was a fair analysis or what you liked and disliked.  I am glad the crazy of the fandom didn't blind you to faults.

I do wish the movie was getting more money and attention, but given it's limited release, I guess this is what we can expect.  I enjoyed your review.  Thank you.

MLP Doing Great, Possible Second Movie!

Yesterday, Hasbro held it's annual 3rd quarter investor relations conference call. With the movie releasing, Toys R' Us filing bankruptcy, and HASCON happening all in this specific time frame, they had quite a bit of important stuff to talk about.  Here it is broken down.

Franchise brands increased 7%, with pony being one of the big ones.

The movie was successful at re-energizing and inviting new fans from their standpoint.

They are banking on making good money from sales of the blu-ray and DVD

The movie is just shy of $40 million. ( It was $35 million last we reported).

They didn't go into detail on the budget of the movie, but did mention multiple times that it was modest. The movie will absolutely pay back it's investment!

They are seeing it driving games, general toys, and more.

More pony games possibly on the way. They didn't go into detail on what those will be (More mobile most likely)

They will be using what they learned from the My Little Pony model in other brands since it was so successful.

Pony is a strong performer on Netflix.

Still plans to continue releasing the movie internationally.

The interesting bit came here when they said, "The model for My Little Pony has really worked, and I think the team is beginning to think about what a next movie will look like."

Whether that is another theater release, or a straight to DVD deal, we might be seeing another My Little Pony movie on the horizon.

That is a stretch but all good news for the land of pony. Seems confirmed we have a season 8.  Funny how we more sure of a season 8 thrn previous seasons even though 8 has not been announced.

Glad Hasbro is happy with their money outcome. Must have been a cheap movie to produce! Hope they reveal how much it cost to make.

So it was revealed today that the budget for the MLP Movie was about $6.5 million. It drew in a return of over $50 million.  Thats a pretty awesome take back!  So the MLP movie was indeed a major success!

I wonder if they will legit make a second movie...? I know there were rumors, or was it official talks?  I don't even know anymore.

As part of Hasbro's long term plan, there was the mention of  second film if the first was successful, which it was.  But I don't know if it will happen for this generation of pony.
