Red Dead is a series of western action-adventure video games developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games. The first game, titled Red Dead Revolver, was originally released for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in May 2004. The second game, Red Dead Redemption, was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2010 to wide critical acclaim, and is considered one of the greatest games of all time. The third entry in the series, Red Dead Redemption 2, is scheduled for release in Q2 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.  This is our discussion topic for one of the most sought after gaming series and perfect for info leading up to future games and past game discussion.

I am as excited for this as I was for GTA V.  Only Rockstar makes games that excite me this much.

Same.  Shame it was delayed till next year, but they always put tons of effort in their games so the wait is well worth it.

No company does as much work as Rockstar Studio's games.  So much detail.

And you know there will be a Red Dead Online like GTA has GTA Online.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-08 16:32:19
Definitely.  I played the Red Dead Online in RDR 2 as much as I did GTA IV online.  I loved it.  I even got my character to level 100.  I never did that in any game before.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-06-08 16:33:23
I played it a lot too.  I really liked having posses and going around the west in that game with friends.  Doing missions was always fun, as was just hunting and exploring.

Either of you play RDR 1 before?  I have it still.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-08 16:34:11
I played it briefly, and it was a totally different animal.  More humorous at times.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-06-08 16:34:17
I played it.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-06-08 16:34:37
It was unique at the time too.  RDR 2 is much better though.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-08 16:34:56
RDR 2 was a masterpiece and easily one of the best games of all time.  It is on an elite shortlist of games.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-06-08 16:35:13
It is a very shortlist of games, that Rockstar happens to frequent.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-06-08 16:35:28
It's amazing how different RDR 1 was from RDR 2.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-06-08 16:36:17
You guys think this will take place before or after RDR 2?
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-08 16:36:22
Before RDR 2.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-06-08 16:36:35
Before.  We are pretty sure John Marston is back.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion

Also talks of possibly playing the whole posse at various times, or anytime.  But I think you will probably just play as one protag.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-08 16:37:31
I think there will be one main character you play as.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-06-08 16:39:27
The landscape seems to be in a plains area abutting some mountains. So maybe Colorado type area?
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-08 16:40:28
I'm not sure the landscape, but since there are mountains, some plains, and deep forest, it is probably a fictional state against the Rockies.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-06-08 16:41:13
That is a pretty safe bet there.  Not quite a Wyoming or Montana, at least from what we've seen yet.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-06-08 16:41:36
Some of the pictures show a town in a forest with very wet roads... so it could be further north and to the west then we think.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-08 16:41:54
New Austin in RDR 2 was based on a part of Texas and of course Mexico to the south.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2017-06-08 16:42:21
There were two states in RDR.  New Austin and West Elizabeth.

I liked Blackwater.  I used to hang there with my friends and online we would try to get a VIP safely to Armadillo without the other group killing the VIP.

One of my favorite regions in RDR 2 was Tall Trees.  I loved the trees, the rivers, and the nature.  I hope RDR 3 has much more forest.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-08 16:45:00
I know forested regions use up a lot more power and juice from devices, but they were awesome.

I didn't go to Mexico much.  Didn't care for it.  Too many bandits.

I really wanna go back and play this game now.

I remember having to fight that corrupt Mexican general who was a horrible child molester.  I hated that man.  I was thrilled when we got the choice to give him justice.

As soon as I had the chance, I let him grovel a bit, then he was gone.  He was a horrible man.

He didn't deserve to still be around with all he did.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion

And the backstabbing of so many people.  Gosh, it was a great game.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion

It was a great game.  I think I am going to go start it up again.

Post by: Silverwing on 2017-06-08 17:01:41
I turned it back on... this game is so grand and epic.  It loaded up to my previous save... many years ago!  2014!!! :D  I love this game.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-08 17:02:10
WOW!  2014?  That is a long time ago!  But it shows you played the game for FOUR YEARS after it's release.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-06-08 17:02:40
And I played it more then four years, but I had nothing new to save after that point.  Gonna go play it a bit.

APD wants you all to enjoy this.

Lets go back in time and check out the Red Dead game trailers.

Back in 2007 there was Red Dead Revolver, the first game.  Look how the tone of the game was so different then.

Then came Red Dead Redemption.  2010 came...

And now we have Red Dead Redemption 2.  Now we have 2018.

Great trailers to remember too, thanks. :D  Good topic idea.

Did you play online?
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion

I did for quite awhile, unlike most games.  I really enjoyed RDR 2 and online was just as fun. :)

It seemed like people didn't shoot first as much, and you actually met new people to hang out with and explore areas.  At least it was for me.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Grapefoot on 2017-06-09 20:50:44
That was the same for me too.  People talked more.  Like you would be out in the dark by a fire, and someone would come up on their horse.  You were ready to draw if needed, but people often times just came to that and talk.  It was really cool.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion

A more mature player base maybe?
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Grapefoot on 2017-06-09 20:51:08
I'm not sure.  It might just be the game's aura.

Tell me a memory you had.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Grapefoot on 2017-06-09 20:53:58
Okay, so there was this cabin out in the woods, and it was in an area HEAVILY populated by cougars.  The person who used to live in the cabin was probably mauled by these things.  So my buds and I would hold up in the cabin then try to be brave and run like heck to a tree and back without a cougar mauling us.  We would then keep trying to run further to another tree.  We also had shoot out trying to kill as many cougars, but they usually won.

Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-09 20:54:52
I know where you are talking about.  I forgot the name, but it is within Tall Trees I think.  There was also a lumber camp that had bears too.

It was near Nekoti Rock and Mazanita Post.  But I don't remember the exact name.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-06-09 20:59:01
I'm trying to find the area.  It might be Aurora Basin.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Grapefoot on 2017-06-09 20:59:13
That rings a bell.  It was near a lake.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion

Found it!  It is Tanner's Reach.  Small cabin.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Grapefoot on 2017-06-09 21:00:27
If it was near the lake and by Nekoti Rock, then that is probably it.  The cabin had a bunch of tanned hides.

I am really looking forward to this. I loved RDR, and RDR 2 is looking like it will raise the bar.  A Rockstar game with no limitations being fully built for these next gen systems!  I am pre-ordering and will be there early to pick it up.  Can't wait.

Really nice variation in environments.  Hopefully they can pull it off realistically (they always do).
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2017-09-29 23:24:00
I really can not wait.  Rockstar has always blown away my expectations.  GTA V was made on the last gen systems, but could still pass as current gen.  I can't wait to see what they do with RDR II.

Some amazing work done by the mapping community of fans of rockstar games.  They made a fairly accurate GTA V map before the game even came out and they are doing it again with RDR II.

No surprise!  Red Dead Redemption 2 has been delayed!  October 26 2018 is the new release date. This is the second delay because the original game was set for April 2017 then delayed to Spring 2018.

I'm glad there be minimal differences since I own the blue PS4 but regarding this game its defiantly a must have I'm getting it soon as its released it look's pretty impressive.

Comes out in October.

What confuses me is the new true desert region shown.  There is no known location for that on the leaked map yet.  So it means Rockstar has a area that no one knows about yet.
Title: Re: Red Dead Series Discussion

I didn't think about... But yourre right. It has to be something we've never seen or know about. Over time too Rockstar has changed things here and there from the leaked map which is now two years old.

More RDR II discussion from Game Informer who also played the game.  Some new tidbits and how the people who played it said it's the most amazing game ever, period.  Nothing comes close.  They took open world and detail to a whole new level.  They said if you thought GTA V was amazing, then nothing can compared to RDR II.  They said this game is incomparable to anything ever made till this point.

Now "rumors" from the map mapping community is that Rockstar sort of maybe leaked that early map to people since they pretty much accurately mapped GTA V's map before release.  So they are thinking that Rockstar is teasing everyone.  They've only shown a small area to everyone in screenshots and videos but are hiding key elements including a desert.

But here is the fan made map as of Sep 26th, 2018.  This is what the map makers at GTA Forums think they know of the Red Dead II world so far based on video and screens.  Again, they were nearly 100% accurate when GTA V released, and there were no surprises left after their thorough work.

This particular map leaves out New Austin and parts of West Elizabeth which are confirmed for the game.

The sheer size of this map.  From today's video we can see that the leaked map has been altered by Rockstar and made... seriously.... like many many many times bigger.  This is going to be a massive and deep game.

Very much so.  We also got our first image of New Austin (from RDR 1). Looks like we will be going back to the RDR 1 world too!  Armadillo is in that one seen when those Mexican banditos shoot that poor deputy.

They also made it appear that we can be a good or bad guy.  The video shows Arthur solving crimes and being a good guy too.

The immense scale is huge.  They also showed Blackwater from RDR 1 too for a short scene with the law enforcement agents walking through town.  You can see the city hall, which now has a fence.

Well this game takes place in 1899 while RDR 1 took place in 1911. So things will definitely be different and have changed.  Blackwater will probably not be as big a town.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2'S FIRST 4 HOURS: THE 'OPEN WORLD' JUST EVOLVED

Source (https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/10/02/red-dead-redemption-2s-first-4-hours-the-open-world-just-evolved?read)

"It’s been five years since Rockstar’s last magnum opus, the Hall-of-Fame-worthy Grand Theft Auto 5 released in 2013, and eight since it made the video game Western viable again with 2010’s Red Dead Redemption. On October 26, Rockstar will make you wait a tad longer to see its next attempt at pushing the open-world genre forward by rolling the opening credits on Red Dead Redemption 2 against a backdrop of a hellish high-mountain snowstorm.

“Nobody’s following us through a storm like this one!” bellows Dutch, the leader of the 20-odd-person Van der Linde gang as they take shelter in a mountaintop camp, evading the pursuers who’ve run them out of the prosperous American West in 1899 following a disastrous job in Blackwater. And so it falls to Dutch and your own Arthur Morgan to venture out into the Grizzly Mountain wilds to find food for the physically and mentally run-down group. “Get yourselves warm,” Dutch tells them. Stay strong. Stay with me. We ain’t done yet!”

Yes, there’s a stunning world waiting to be explored here, but you’ll have to make your way down off the bitter cold of the mountain to get to it. Naturally, the quest to find supplies goes awry after reuniting with Micah, a fellow Van der Linde member who was out looking for a handful of missing members. We came to a farm, and after Micah cautiously approached, a firefight broke out (naturally). It turned out that folks from the rival O’Driscoll gang were inside. It’s your first taste of gunplay in Red Dead 2, and it turns out that you can both shoot the hats off of your targets, and get your own lid blown off as well. In a laudable touch, the importance of your headwear is not lost in Rockstar’s world; your original hat (but not any subsequent one you buy) is not only accessible in your stash at any time if it’s not on your head, but it’ll also be tagged with an icon on your mini-map if it’s not in your possession, so that you might find it more quickly.

After getting jumped by a bad guy hiding in the barn, I had the choice to take him out or spare him following our fistfight. I chose the choke-him-to-death option, moving my morality meter a bit towards the evil end of the scale, and promptly searched the house to find a solid stash of supplies. Holding down the Square button (it’ll be X on Xbox One) when you’re near something that might have multiple objects to sift through, such as a cabinet, will have Arthur automatically rummage through everything nearby. I left the house with some oatcakes, canned food, and a pack of premium cigarettes – one of which I lit up outside (net effect: stamina up, health core meter down).

There was also a woman hiding inside, Sadie Adler, and after a commotion with Micah, we learned that she too was a victim of the O’Driscolls’ raid on her family’s home. “We’re bad men, but we ain’t them,” Dutch says as her family home burns to the ground, the result of a lantern on a table getting knocked over during the commotion caused when she came out of hiding. Whoops.

The music swells for the first time during the return trip to the Van der Linde camp, and it is spectacular. It is period-perfect, and Rockstar told me that there are 192 individual pieces of scored music, composed by RDR1’s Woody Jackson. Arthur and Javier, another Van der Linde-r, venture back out after checking back in at camp, this time in search of an old friend. It’s here I first experimented with RDR2’s built-in first-person perspective. Simply cycle through perspectives by pressing the Touchpad (likely to be the View button on Xbox) until you arrive on the first-person view that’s implemented so thoroughly that you could play the entire game that way. Your arms and legs are visible when you look down (in some games, you’re basically just a floating head with arms), your head bobs when you walk, and on horseback you can see the mane of your steed in front of you. In the options menu, if you’re curious, you can adjust the FOV, and individually turn the vehicle or horse views on or off when in first-person, if they annoy you.

Mantling along the cliffside in search of our injured friend who’s calling out to us, a Rockstar rep points out that we’re actually ABOVE the game’s dynamic weather systems. The volumetric clouds just off the cliffside would allow us to see the world below if the weather were clearer. Arthur picks him up, as he’s too injured to walk and, as we try to ride back down the mountain, we’re attacked by a pack of wolves. That I had my camera set to first-person here proved to be a cinematic choice. The angry wolves lunging at me in first-person was harrowing; they’d chomp down on my arm, I’d shake them off, and then shoot them. It was a bit unsettling to see their bodies crumple and their blood seep into the snow.

The graphics themselves are beautiful. Little touches abound, like the snow sticking to Arthur’s jacket before slowly melting, or blood from enemies rubbing off onto your avatar’s body if you carry their corpses around. And if those details don’t floor you, the lighting and animation surely will. We next sought to rob a train after catching wind that it would be worth our while to do so, our money having been largely lost back in Blackwater. Once we boarded the train – I’ll leave you to discover the details of that for yourself – I got my first real look at Red Dead 2’s phenomenal animation system. Remember that impressive Euphoria-powered Indiana Jones tech demo from 2006? No? That’s probably because almost no publishers or developers took NaturalMotion up on their silky smooth animation technology, for whatever reason.

Rockstar was one of the few that did. Euphoria commercially debuted in Grand Theft Auto 4, and it’s been refined through Max Payne 3 and Grand Theft Auto 5. But here in Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s simply next-level. I can already see the potential for “guys getting shot off of their horse” montage videos appearing across the internet after launch. We’ve seen Red Dead 2’s trailers, where bad dudes on horseback are shot, the horse bucks, and the guy’s limp body flops before being flung off the steed. That’s real gameplay, and it happens differently every single time based on the physics involved. It is both gross and spectacular. To wit: as I made my way up the train through the cars, shooting those in my way, they reacted exactly as I imagine they would to a real bullet. One foe got winged in the shoulder, recoiled back on that side of his body, and then continued to attack after the non-fatal blow. I put another guy down with a bullet right through his eye socket, and he limped to the ground instantly, the gruesome exit wound visible on his face.

I got to see more of this in the O’Driscoll camp we raided before getting off the mountain a bit earlier. We snuck into our rival’s controlled turf, and Arthur was given the option: lead the assault myself, or send the gang in. I tried both tactics, the only difference mostly amounting to who shoots first. Still, flanking, cover, and that sweet, sweet location-based bullet damage all came into play as I finally got my first taste of RDR1’s returning Dead Eye mechanic. Click R3 to trigger it, then tag your foes, let it rip, and watch the carnage unfold. You replenish it by chugging Tonic, which is in reasonable supply in the campaign’s early going.

I went to check in at camp again, at which point Pearson, the ex-Navy officer turned camp cook, tells us to go out and get some food. We head out with Charles and his injured hand – a convenient gameplay excuse to let me, as Arthur, do the work with the bow and arrow to hunt and kill a couple of deer to bring back. Clicking in both sticks activates a scent tracker called Eagle Eye, and yes, even Arthur himself has a scent wafting off of his body (it’s the pre-Old Spice days of 1899, so I can only imagine…). You can use this to stay on the trail of the deer. It’s difficult to land a fatal blow from a far enough distance that you don’t scare them away using traditional aiming; Dead Eye helped a lot here, though I didn’t figure that out before wounding a couple of poor, innocent doe-eyed woodland creatures that managed to limp away to safety.

When I did kill a few, I slung the deer husks over the back of my horse and spotted a bear on my way back to camp. Against the advice of my Rockstar demo chaperones -- because at this mid-winter point in the game, the bear was obviously ravenous and therefore far more hostile -- I hopped off my mount and tried to get into a good shooting position, using a rifle this time. I lined it up, used Dead Eye, and put several rounds into the beast. It didn’t die, but it didn’t come after me either. Fortunately for me, it turned and ran in the opposite direction. Theoretically, you could hunt squirrels and rabbits this way, but I didn’t get a chance to test that out. Instead, back at camp, Pearson had me skin the deer. Walking up to the carcass, its skin unzipped a little too conveniently, if you ask me – and it was time to get off the damn mountain and get down into the “Rockstar world,” a moniker the developers have opted to call it, rather than carry the limitations of the traditional “open world” genre as we’ve known it.

As it turns out, Rockstar probably isn’t wrong to elevate its open worlds above others. Detail is incredible. Mud dirties clothes with a rich brown color – and then dries into a light tan over time. Other visual layers, like blood and snow, function similarly across real-time behaviors as you’d expect them to. Random encounters appear to be far more commonplace than they were in RDR1. One random encounter brought us upon a woman who was being abducted by what was obviously a terrible man. She was hogtied and being hauled like cargo over the back of the steed. I lassoed him off his horse and, after disposing of him, I picked up the bound woman and dropped her down into the mud so I could untie her. The thick mud from the moonlit swampland we were in gooshed around her, and when she got up she was covered in filth but clearly relieved to be alive. And as I rode away, the moonlight – peering through the mists of the muddy swamp – glinted off of the hilt of my rifle, which was stashed, barrel-down, on my horse’s saddle. It’s a million little details like those that all combine to make Red Dead Redemption 2 feel like a real, lived-in place – much more so than just about any non-Rockstar game before it. In fact, Red Dead 2 is gorgeous enough that it may push a lot of PS4 Pros and Xbox One Xes into living rooms, and plenty of 4K TVs as well (I’m in the latter camp; time to go shopping!).

Missions feel as organic as the game world does, which may be Red Dead 2’s biggest leap forward. Take, for example, a saloon I walked into. I met a stranger there who was talking to a passed-out barfly. Or, well, he was trying to. Turns out the unconscious man was “The Gunslinger,” a legendary gunman on whom the stranger – a reporter – was trying to interview for his book. He asks Arthur for help in locating, interviewing, and photographing each of the notorious shooters he wants to include in the novel. He suggests I shoot them if they give me any problems. That setup led me to the aforementioned random kidnapping event in the swamp area, which was followed by the main mission there: winning over Black Belle, a renegade gunwoman, for an interview. I’d only known to go there by using a provided photo to start my search, and once I arrived, she was skeptical of my intentions. But before I could convince her, a group of bounty hunters approached her home, looking to bring her to justice, dead or alive.

Such began another crazy sequence that deftly mixed cutscenes with proper gameplay. I agreed to help Black Belle in exchange for the interview and photo. She then told me to pull the lever on her porch when she gave the word because, you guessed it, the whole place was rigged to blow, and the bounty hunters were slowly approaching her front door. Setting off the explosives triggered another chaotic firefight, after which, true to her word, Black Belle allows you to take her picture. Humorously, you can request that she change her pose, which will vary from a more traditional posture to a guns-akimbo stance that wouldn’t look out of place on the cover of Guns & Ammo.

After that explosive gunfight, my time was spent with a combination of roaming the open world and talking to my fellow gangsters back at camp – which was now set up comfortably outside the town of Valentine. I never did make it back to the saloon to talk to that biographer. At camp, the man who goes by Uncle, clearly inebriated, wanted to head into town. Marybeth and two other women from camp convinced Arthur to let them tag along on the wagon, as they’d been cooped up in camp for the last couple weeks.

Another stellar piece of music kicked off our journey. En route, Uncle asked the ladies to sing a song, which they happily obliged in unison, at one point misremembering different words and thus ending their tune with a fit of laughter. Moments later, another wandering wagon passing in front of us saw one of its horses break free. I stopped, slowly approached the horse, calming it with my voice and then a gentle pat once I got closer, and reunited it with its owner. And then, after the good deed was done, I decided to test Red Dead 2’s sandbox by shooting the man I’d just aided. I must say I was disappointed when the game threw up a “Mission Failed” screen despite no one being around to witness the crime. I was told afterwards that this event had further-reaching consequences, and thus couldn’t end with me shooting that man in the face. To Red Dead 2’s credit, though, when I redid the mission, I simply kept right on riding past the stranded traveler, and Marybeth scolded me for not helping him. Nice touch!

In Valentine, I watched a man trying to shoe his horse, offered assistance, and watched him die suddenly, violently, and tragically as the horse fatally kicked him square in the head. I approached a Bluetick Coonhound dog, pet him, and watched his tail adorably and furiously wag. I was told the next time I came into town, this particular pup wouldn’t bark at me – we were friends now. I shot and killed a turkey; Rockstar says there are over 200 species of wildlife in Red Dead 2. I was thrown from my horse and killed (painfully, I might add, a sensation I was once again able to register thanks to those Euphoria-powered physics) when I rode too fast outside of town and accidentally ran into a knee-high-to-my-horse rock. I chased and lassoed a boar, skinned it, and threw the pelt over the back of my horse. I passed the controller and watched Brian Altano sift through the ultra-detailed (and long) catalog at the town’s general store (see video above). Controller back in my hands, a man in town ran up to me, swore he knew me from the crimes back at Blackwater, and then dashed off, seemingly to tell the authorities. So I chased him out of town, both of us on horses (I stole a stranger’s steed), and ran him to the edge of a cliff, where he fell off his horse and clung to life on the edge, literally by his fingertips. I blackhatted it and stepped on his fingers, sending him plummeting to his death below. Back in town, the L2-based conversation system that lets you talk to just about anyone makes it fun to see what people will say and where the interactions can lead. In Red Dead 2, it seems that you can turn over more stones than in any Rockstar offering to date, GTA included.

Red Dead Redemption 2, like Grand Theft Auto 5 before it, is what happens when world-class talent is given virtually unlimited time and resources to bring that team’s vision to life. Most games, if they’re lucky, can check one or two of those boxes, but Rockstar is about the only outfit that can consistently claim all three. The result, if the opening hours of Red Dead Redemption 2 are any indication, is a bar-raising effort that will be remembered long after this console generation ends."

Take this with a grain of salt.  But someone on Reddit claiming to be a former Rockstar Leeds employee says that they will RE-RELEASE RDR 1 as DLC for RDR 2.  No word on which systems or if computer will get in on that action.  They said RDR 1 is being remade with RDR 2's hardware.

So what are some thoughts so far?

I have sadly lost my first horse. :(  I was at the train station in Valentine paying off a bounty when a train came and hit my horse on the tracks.  The train did try to stop in time though.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION II SALES UPDATE

Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 sold through more than $725 million worth in its first three days of sales. That indicates roughly 10 million copies sold at the outset (and if you consider average game prices, 12 million units at $60 each), according to analyst Ben Schachter at Macquarie Research. And it means that game sales could hit 15 million or 20 million copies sold by the end of Christmas, he said. Based on my own take, that means the game could be profitable by the end of the year.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold about 70 percent as well as Grand Theft Auto V in its first three days. Schachter’s own estimate for sales in the initial quarter are at 15 million copies, a conservative number, and he said that investor expectations are at 20 million copies. If Red Dead stays at the 70 percent level, 20 million is doable by early December, Schachter said in a report. With an average rating of 97 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic, the prospects look good.  At 20 million copies sold, overall revenue for Rockstar Games would be $860 million.

So we take revenue estimated at $860 million, and then costs of $540 million, and this game will have a profit of $320 million by December 31. Add to that revenues from Red Dead Online, which are likely to be good. The breakeven point would be about 12.5 million games sold.

Pachter estimates that Take-Two gets $100 million in revenue per quarter from GTA Online, which has been out for five years. That’s been a huge success, with the peak quarter at maybe $125 million. It will take Red Dead Online some time to ramp up its revenues. But it’s a conservative bet to say it could generate $50 million per quarter for Take-Two, or an additional $200 million a year. It will have costs as well, but not nearly as much as it took to create the game.

Into perspective, GTA V broke sales records of all forms of entertainment when released.  Rockstar and experts never thought RDR II would even come close to what GTA V, and they didn't expect it too.  That wasn't the goal.  GTA V broke records including the Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours and the Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion.  GTA V sold nearly 12 million copies in the first 24hrs and hit over $1 billion in sales in less than three days.

Full list of Grand Theft Auto V record-breaking achievements:

1. Best-selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours

2. Best-selling videogame in 24 hours

3. Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion

4. Fastest videogame to gross $1 billion

5. Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours

6. Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours

Well.... I did it.  I beat the "main" story but haven't done the epilogue.

I won't give any spoilers.... but this game is an easy 10 of 10.  The storytelling and story itself when completed with RDR I is one of the best stories in video games and all media.  I'm blown away.

Lots of Rockstar stuff today.

'RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2' UPDATE 1.15 EXPANDS STORY MODE, ADDS NEW SINGLE-PLAYER MISSIONS FOR CONSOLE GAMERS (https://www.newsweek.com/red-dead-redemption-2-update-115-expands-story-mode-adds-new-single-player-missions-console-1477195)

Red Dead Redemption 2 Update 1.15 New Story Mode Missions
All of the new content arriving in update 1.15 was added to the game when the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 came out in November, but this will be the first time console players will be able to access the new story mode missions.

New Bounty Hunter Missions include tracking down the following new bounties:

Herman Zizendorf—A German immigrant to Blackwater, Zizendorf has been stealing construction tools. His bounty can be picked up at the Blackwater Police Department.

Camille de Millemont—A Confederate zealot, the French de Millemont became a member of the Lemoyne Raiders. The Scarlett Meadows Sheriff's Office offers a $55 bounty on de Millemont.

Bart Cavanaugh—A member of the Laramie Gang, the $60 bounty on Cavanaugh is offered by the Strawberry Sheriff's Office.

New Gang Hideouts are also included in the 1.15 update, allowing you to take on the Del Lobos gang at Gaptooth Breach and Solomon's Folly.

In the new story mode mission "To The Ends of the Earth," which is available to players beginning in Chapter 2 of the campaign, a stranger found west of your Horseshoe Overlook camp (look for smoke) asks players to collect herbs for him.

Another new addition to the PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 might inspire some players to pick the game back and try out some Edward Curtis and Ansel Adams snapshots: RDR2 now has a photo mode.

Accessing the new photo mode in Red Dead Redemption 2 is easy. To access, use the options button on your PlayStation 4 controller to pause the game, then press the touch pad button at the controller's center. Camera options will come up on-screen, allowing you to move the frame freely around your character. The photo mode also includes six virtual lenses, ranging from 16mm to 75mm focal lengths. You can also adjust the focus distance, blur, contrast and exposure, or add effects and filters to make your photo look like a tintype, daguerreotype, silver gelatin and other varieties of old-timey photo print.

Beyond the new photo mode and story mode missions, the 1.15 update to Red Dead Redemption 2 also adds a number of items previously only available in the PC version of the game. New weapons include the M1899 Pistol, Evans Repeater, High Roller Revolver and LeMat Revolver. There are also new horse breeds: Warped Brindle Arabian, Few Spot Appaloosa, Perlino Andalusian and Red Chestnut Arabian. Finally, the update adds new trinkets, including the Hawk Talon, Cat Eye, Shark Tooth, Turtle Shell and Crow Beak.

Red Dead Redemption 2 update 1.15 is available now for PS4 and will arrive on Xbox One January 21.

We need to give more credit to Rockstar.  Just because one super important person is leaving, doesn't mean it's doom and gloom.  We may see a difference in product and we may not.  But let's be patient.  We've seen no evidence yet of a decline in Rockstar content.  Only continued improvement.

Rockstar’s Dan Houser leaves behind a legacy of perfection at all costs (https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/rockstar-games-dan-houser-legac/)

I wish we would get a reason why he decided to leave.

This game had so much potential online, it's a shame it wasn't seen to fruition.  Even the main online story didn't even finish.  They started it and never finished it.  There is no conclusion.

I hate to say it, but the online's unfinished mess, takes away from the truly amazing single player experience.

ROCKSTAR DONE WITH RDR 2?

Rockstar Games has updated the credits for Red Dead Redemption 2 and its Red Dead Online counterpart, seemingly saying goodbye to the open world western. Red Dead Redemption 2 studio Rockstar Games is busy working on Grand Theft Auto 6, and it seems to be shifting its attention away from its older games to focus on the new title. This was apparent recently when Rockstar Games sent out a similar message for Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online.

Rockstar recently released a "thank you" to those that worked on GTA 5 and GTA Online, which many have taken as a sign that the company is saying goodbye to those games. Now a similar message has been released for Red Dead Redemption 2, accessible via the game's pause menu. As of the latest update, players can now head directly to the credits through the Red Dead Redemption 2 pause menu to see who made the game and Rockstar's special message for them.

The message reads: "Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped create Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online." The message was added as part of the latest Red Dead Online update, which added some new missions for players to do in the game. While Rockstar has not outright stated that this is meant to be a goodbye to Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online, that's certainly how the community is taking it, and it does seem to be the studio's intention.

The Red Dead Online update came as such a surprise because Rockstar had previously indicated that it was done releasing major new content for Red Dead Online. It would be surprising if Rockstar released anything substantial for Red Dead Online moving forward, so fans shouldn't expect any big new content drops at any point in the near future. Instead, they can count on Rockstar directing its resources to Grand Theft Auto 6, which is in active development at the company.

Grand Theft Auto 6 was finally announced earlier this year, though nothing has been shown of the game so far. All fans know in an official capacity is that GTA 6 exists, but leaks from reputable insiders have suggested that the game is set in Vice City and will feature a female protagonist. It remains to be seen if there's any truth to those leaks, but with Rockstar supposedly aiming for a 2024 release, hopefully information on the game comes sooner rather than later.
