Title: Look What I Found!
Post by: Kiwi on 2017-06-11 16:47:05
Look What I Found, Inner Discovery!

Hello everyone.  The other day I was trying to share locations on Google Maps Street View to some friends I was talking with.  I thought, wouldn't it be neat for people to share neat locations they have found on Street View (either Google or Bing) with everyone?  Pretty much, this topic is for people to share their discoveries of neat places, towns, and locations. If you want to show the grocery store you shop at on Wednesday's, show your hometown, maybe the local park you frequent, this is the topic for you!

So how this works, using Bing Maps (https://binged.it/2scCBBn) or Google Maps (https://goo.gl/maps/o7QnQFWLAnQ2), each has a street view type application.  From there, get the permalink to the street view map you want to share, and post it.  Share why you are posting with a description.

I hope people can find enjoyment in this, and I look forward to seeing what you decide to share.

This will be cool to show off places we've been or share with people our area's we live.  Give some perspective.  I like this idea. :)

I remember going to Mendocino (https://goo.gl/maps/ufkm4UwAbPQ2) back in the day.  It was always so peaceful and quiet, especially in the off season.  Lots of artists live there, so its very quiet when tourists aren't around.  It doesn't even really have a good beach, since most of the coastline is rocky cliffs.  It's just a place to chill I guess.

Another view (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.306231,-123.7985256,3a,55.3y,21.76h,89.24t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sSrFEcoGwiCdMDWxZZ8ov1w!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)

One of the trails I walked on (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.3029927,-123.7983621,3a,60y,125.15h,91.17t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sRzSeoX1oxjRrJCXZg1_9jQ!2e0!3e2!7i13312!8i6656).

This will be a great topic.

Oh cool!  I've been there too, Soda. :)  Just south of Fort Bragg.  I stopped in here to get a snack at the Chevron station, then I walked down to the grassy area and ate one of those nasty (but sorta good) taquito gas station things.

Very cool topic!

Looks like a neat little quaint town too!  I like that trail picture too, looking towards the bridge and the raging Pacific Ocean.  What a neat place, Soda.  Probably a lot of great memories.  I would totally go there.

CAMBRIDGE BAY

Want to be in the middle of nowhere on an island?  Here is Cambridge Bay, Canada (https://www.google.com/maps/@69.1177051,-105.0537651,3a,75y,219.63h,80.37t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s3SQ-vh4iXk5gTLJd5thTPA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).  Mainly First Nation's, or natives live there.  It is truly in the middle of nowhere with no access to it other then by plane or boat.  Enjoy!

Woah. I'm kinda getting a bit of Silent Hill vibes from that.

It's like out there.  I was seeing how far north the Google 3rd party people with cameras went, and I think that is the furthest north, at least for Canada.  I'm checking Alaska too, which does go to the tippy north at Prudhoe Bay.

Now imagine that same town at night.  Pitch black other then the few town lights.  There is no other town even remotely close to you.  It is pitch silent and dark, maybe a street lamp buzzing.  Otherwise... nothing.  The stars and the Heavens must be amazing to look at.

It's crazy to think how isolated they and many other villages like that are.  They have to rely on barges for supplies once or twice a year, they hold out.  Hope they don't run out.

CHUCKANUT DRIVE

Chuckanut Drive is a cool road in Washington State, just south of scenic Bellingham and Fairhaven.  It clings along a forested mountain range that slides down into the icy waters below.  It is a historic road with lots of winding curves, bridges, etc.  Also I can not tell you how many water falls there are along the road.  There are several as you drive around.  Many look out points too, and massive trees.  It is densely forested and truly scenic and beautiful.  One of the prettiest roads I have been on, and I've been on many roads.

Awesome (https://www.google.com/maps/@48.6421978,-122.4570589,3a,75y,281.72h,100.02t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1s-CJP7aarQoeY%2FVBxOjFWC60I%2FAAAAAAAAiSA%2FddoRGNKeTo8eVKSb-CQUBHEVZaRTDf0cgCJkC!2e4!3e11!6s%2F%2Flh4.googleusercontent.com%2F-CJP7aarQoeY%2FVBxOjFWC60I%2FAAAAAAAAiSA%2FddoRGNKeTo8eVKSb-CQUBHEVZaRTDf0cgCJkC%2Fw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya35.400394-ro-0-fo100%2F!7i7168!8i3584) pic here.  Spin the camera around 360 degrees.  I have it pointing to the San Juan Islands, then if you turn completely around, you see the Cascade Mountain Range.  The big snowy mountain is Mount Baker, the snowiest place in America.

That is beautiful!  Oh my gosh.  What an awesome vantage and view!  So you look in one way, see island and the ocean, then the other is snow capped mountains?  Talk about gorgeous and what a cool road!  Sounds really cool with all the waterfalls.

That is awesome! Some mountain roads are super high, it' s kind of freaky.  I like this one though, because you are still close to the water, unless you are worried of rolling off the cliff.  Luckily I see railings and old cement retaining walls.  Looks very pretty.

Check out this totally random island I found in the Pacific Ocean.  It's called Pitcairn Island.  It is apparently home to the wreck of the famous ship, the HMS Bounty.  It is so tiny and remote, and there is a town on the island!  I can't imagine living there!

Here is the island main gateway and dock. Image (https://www.google.com/maps/@-25.0707952,-130.1105159,3a,60y,278.26h,90.38t/data=!3m1!1e3)

Here is the island's main government and post office (https://www.google.com/maps/@-25.0662239,-130.1004223,3a,60y,222.65h,93.64t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1syz2oNbIJ3Nry5pBDG-YmEQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).

The island's cafe (https://www.google.com/maps/@-25.0675195,-130.0981845,3a,47.8y,16.72h,87.05t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1snBw1AywapELgvgw-97rCWQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).

On one edge of the island there is a road that runs along a steep ridged cliff with the ocean below!  Amazing views, but scary (https://www.google.com/maps/@-25.0684438,-130.1132459,3a,60y,194.68h,71.61t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sFfbHwkKi90fnkEv99_agfQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).

Found this crazy hairpin corner (https://www.google.com/maps/@-25.0736629,-130.0937508,3a,60y,325.11h,83.94t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sdYvlGQ6P49k8S4I5QbwNBw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).

Amazing view of these stairs that go down to these rocks on the water.  Zoom around and check out the waves going over the rocks (https://www.google.com/maps/@-25.0752415,-130.0887543,3a,60y,52.68h,104.98t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sgBvRJitfKC4-UH6qLcLmxg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).

Isn't that mind boggling?  And there are people who live there and that is all they know.  They know every inch of that island like their home and some never plan to leave.  It is a totally different mentality and lifestyle, one that most of us here on the mainland could never understand.

Great find, Smiles.

So we are always posting really pretty things up, here are some really SAD places I am going to post.  They are relics of a former time, poor neighborhoods, or just truly neglected towns and cities.  I hope you find this list interesting.

PORT ARTHUR, TEXAS (https://www.google.com/maps/place/29°52'19.6%22N+93°56'05.2%22W/@29.872119,-93.9362113,615m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m9!1m2!2m1!1sport+arthur!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d29.8721164!4d-93.9347885)
Here is a gloomy town surrounding by Texas' oil refineries along the coast.  The town is mostly poor with very few options for the people.  The population has been declining and the town has so little money, they can't properly run the street lights in town, so they have placed make-shift stop signs at intersections.  Downtown is literally crumbling.  From the satellite view, you can see the empty lots that used to be buildings.

Downtown Image here.  Be sure to zoom around 360.  Lots of historic buildings boarded up and crumbling onto the road. (https://goo.gl/maps/XgS468WGAkk)

Interesting historic building they gutted but left the facade and turned it into a cover for parking? (https://goo.gl/maps/dpwUqFngZ9y).

Tallest building in town, not completely empty and gutted.  Note the make-shift stop signs at this intersection (https://goo.gl/maps/DuUfVuaNiL42).

Sad state of affairs downtown (https://goo.gl/maps/LsBRa31e9cN2).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BELLE GLADE, FLORIDA (https://www.google.com/maps/@29.8706748,-93.9340957,3a,75y,139.67h,98.99t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1senMQBNJQV8e14Fy-ae5kYg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)

East of Miami in the Everglades is the dying town of Belle Glade.  Downtown is falling apart with high unemployment and a drug problem.  There is no opportunity for many of these small inner Florida towns.

Tennemant life in Belle Glade (https://goo.gl/maps/Ja5oX6wAmDN2).

Passing time in the Florida sun (https://goo.gl/maps/BRy2NJeNm3M2).

Take your choice (https://goo.gl/maps/UQ1MRLtjb8p).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EAST ST. LOUIS, MO (https://www.google.com/maps/@29.8706748,-93.9340957,3a,75y,139.67h,98.99t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1senMQBNJQV8e14Fy-ae5kYg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).

One of the most dangerous and poor cities to live in in all of North America, East St. Louis is rife with city corruption, a crumbling historic downtown, and streetlights and intersection lights that don't work because the city can't pay it's bills.  The entire population lives below the poverty line in East Saint Louis.

This beautiful old theater has tree's growing out of it, right in the heart of downtown (https://goo.gl/maps/xj3Bu6cQLA42).

These open lots in the middle of the downtown are known as "urban forests."  That is when the buildings are torn down and nature takes back over.  All this used to be blocks of downtown buildings (https://goo.gl/maps/cJ5ssQzYcJG2).

A perfect example of what I said above is this image from 2014 (https://goo.gl/maps/HYDDF7AEjMS2) to this image in 2016. (https://goo.gl/maps/Dyph7tZhMLy)

Any idea where it is from?

Anywhere between Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington State.  Those are larch and evergreen tree's.  The cottage style itself makes it seem European, but nowhere in Europe are their forests of conifers such as this.  So it is limited to the North American west coast, specifically the Pacific Northwest.  But it is hard to say for certain.

It is also possible this is photoshopped. (But I really don't think it is).

The cottage style leans me more towards maybe what a Russian explorer or early northern explorer would have done while examining southeast Alaska or British Columbia's inner coast.  So many fjords, it's impossible to really know unless there is a direct source.

I've actually been doing it for some reason the past few days.  Not sure why.

Maybe you just like giving high fives.

I knew someone who did elbow "high fives."  They thought hand touching was unsanitary, so they used their elbow.

I know the elbow thing.  It's gotta be a hand job... hand... thing.  Has to be done with the hand.

*Points at my hand.*

So we are always posting really pretty things up, here are some really SAD places I am going to post.  They are relics of a former time, poor neighborhoods, or just truly neglected towns and cities.  I hope you find this list interesting.

And I did find it extremely interesting.  I spent time going through beyond what you posted there and driving around the towns with the street view tool.  Very fascinating that places like this and this level of poverty exist in the developed world.  We just tend to ignore it or not realize it is even there.  We have plenty to do at home to fix our own people's lives.  But thankfully we've started doing so with our booming economy and record low unemployment right now among the majority and minority groups.

That's a cool picture. Hard to believe places like that exist and people live in places like that.

Like check out this house in Norway  How do you even get to own property like that?

Gosh.  Some people might get that land from their parents, because I can't see that kind of property being available for purchase anymore.

US News and World Report ranked their annual best states to live in for 2019.  It seems to be quite common to see Washington ranked at the top on almost all positive studies.  Washington has stayed within the top five for the past several years while other states drop in and out.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings?src=usn_tw

TOP 5
1. Washington State
2. New Hampshire
3. Minnesota
4. Utah
5. Vermont

BOTTOM 5

45. Arkansas
46. New Mexico
47. West Virginia
48. Mississippi
49. Alabama
50. Louisiana

And where are some of the bigger states?

13. Florida
19. California
25. New York
33. Michigan
35. Illinois
38. Texas
39. Ohio
41. Pennsylvania

I can tell you right now, Utah shouldn’t even be close to top 5 best states. 😂😂 the rest of the list actually isn’t bad tho.

Makes sense what is at top.  And yes, Utah is a great state for raising a family.  It lacks some in opportunity but it's a safe state ir not a bit boring.  It's also growing hecka fast.

I can see why all the top five states are there.  Washington is very wealthy, beautiful, productive, lots of big companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Boeing, UPS, etc.

New Hampshire is near many big population centers for good wages, small size, pretty locale.  Minnesota, Utah, Vermont all have their charms.  Again the south, mainly the deep south, lags behind.

Ohhh that sounds very nice. :)  There is this one place I think used in Bond movies?  I think it's in the Highlands area of Scotland... but it's a mansion on a valley with water by it.  It looks so peaceful.  I would love to find it on Google Maps.

Well.  Unfortunately you won't find it anymore,  It burned to the ground.  Google Maps (https://goo.gl/maps/FJhb96SNc8npiNnY7).  But it is located somewhere around here.  Establishing shots in Skyfall were in Glencoe, Scotland, but the actual mansion was in Surrey, England near Elmstead.  It was also used in other Bond films for different locations.

That is really cool, Kiwi.  I watch it.  Now days something that would never be done over a river for environmental reasons.  But that is wild they did it back in the 1890s!  Insane actually.

I remember a whole bunch of techie books I read while being a child. If they had an aricle about city rails, Wuppertal's Schwebebahn will be mentioned in them for sure.  8)
Now days something that would never be done over a river for environmental reasons.
Well, some Asian and African countries still use rivers as the sewer replacement.
And this gal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuffi) had a luck to fell into a river instead of on anyone's head.

I find transit very interesting and how countries do it.  It's so different all around the world.

Post by: timmelon on 2020-03-16 19:42:03
Yeah, having at least one difference from ordinary transport will make the said system progressively more interesting.
Just a few cave-like stations (https://i0.wp.com/happiestoutdoors.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/20171012-DSC07636.jpg?w=1048&ssl=1) have turned Stockholm's subway to an attraction for tourists, and same can be said about richly ornated Soviet-type Metro stations, especially from Moscow's historical center. They can look astonishing, and the only thing that disappoints me is an inevitable replacing of the old trains. New ones are made with boring-but-practical approach, and of course, are more convenient and reliable, but I miss the cuteness of old trains, which had wooden frames, sofa-like seats and round lamps, which blink (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-NT8Y_Bbms&t=320) at arriving on station  ^-^.
Title: Re: Look What I Found!
Post by: Soda on 2020-03-16 22:53:16
But new trains are so much more comfy!  But I agree, they lose a lot of the traditional appeal and uniqueness that made them special.
Title: Re: Look What I Found!
Post by: timmelon on 2020-03-17 00:38:39
And I believe that every unique transit system has a majority of passengers who just commutes and don't care about stations, trains and so on.  ;p
Spoiler (hover to show)
P.S. Sometimes the vandal-proofing of seats may be gone too far:
But it really doesn't matter to me, because it's almost impossible to have a seat at rush hour (even at 9am, when trains are coming every 70-80 seconds).  ;D

Title: Re: Look What I Found!
Post by: timmelon on 2020-12-08 01:10:31
They are called «1,5-person» seats — due to weird (they wanted to save money on one window? (https://i.piccy.info/i9/00caa7037ac3b8368f7ce0dac022af2c/1607417604/119245/1408769/47521e_pic_thmb.jpg) ;D) door arrangement this type of cars had «cab-1-6-6-6-1,5» seat configuration instead of «cab-6-6-6-3», like in all previous and next types.
So, I think it was good for one wide person ;D or two children. But when some requirement like «the seat must not be damaged by a knife» came out, all new seats got a hard surface with unified soft blocks (https://img.ttransport.ru/photo/06/98/69897.jpg), so in the case with 1,5 person seat (that type of car was pretty unique, and most of them were scrapped before they got new seats) there was easier to cut one block in a half than to make wider one ;D.
