Title: Movies In General
Post by: Darrin on 2016-08-29 20:45:54
Movies In General!

Welcome to "Movies In General," a topic about any and all films.  Talk about anything you want to share.  We have certain topics already devoted to certain films, but other movies, we don't, unless you create one.  For everything else, it can be discussed here.  Maybe bring up an old film or ask the opinion of others on something else.

If this topic isn't a good idea, I'm fine with removing it.  Thanks!

So there I am sure someone here has seen it, but I have not.  Everyone tells me (all two people that I know who have seen it) not to waste my time watching this.  But I don't know... I like the character design and how it looks from the few short clips I've seen... Anyone here seen, "Alpha and Omega (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_and_Omega_(film)#Sequels)?"  I like wolves anyways...

Alpha and Omega is a nice movie. I personally don't dig the style that much. But it's a nice sweet movie. It's your typical whacky rom-com movie. The characters are decent, the plot is done before but it's a fun watch. If you have time I'd say watch it. But don't watch the million sequels it has. Those are crap.

Yeah, the sequels look bad.  A money grab to make a series have direct to DVD movies for kids to have their parents buy... like what happened to Land Before Time. :(

I need to find a place to watch it, then I will. :)  I am kind of excited.  I liked Balto.

I'm excited to watch it too.  It's nice to see someone else hasn't seen it. ;)  Wolves do pretty much rock.  Poor overlooked coyotes. ;)

Don't expect a ground breaking movie haha. It's just alright.
It is on Netflix I believe. And wolves are p-cool.

You can probably also catch it in a bargain bin at the store.  I saw it for $5.

I am going to try and watch it tomorrow. :)  You know... since I got time to do anything now.

*Scene turns to me sitting on a couch  with my mouth half open slowly pushed a sub sandwich in my mouth, a 84oz tub of lemonade, a fan pointed at me, and watching childrens cartoons in lazy clothes.*

But that belongs in bad animated movies.

I know, but at least we have a topic to discuss films in general now.  I thought we used to have one, but that must have been on PSF 1.0.  I looked all over for one but couldn't find one.

Well hmm, in general. Uh. Kubo is a good movie. Laika makes great movies, except Box Trolls. I don't know what drugs they were on, but that movie is uh... Eeeee, aaaaah, it's no Bueno. Not by their standards. It's just... I can't get behind it. The characters just aren't that engaging
Title: Re: Movies In General

I still haven't seen either, but their animation techniques are fascinating to me.  You really helped promote me to go seeing them.  It's amazing what they can do with hand made parts still.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-08-29 22:10:58
GO SEE THEM! Go support Laika and watch Kubo. They're getting completely screwed over by the theaters (at least the ones near me). They aren't giving it many showings and they're at odd hours of the day so it isn't getting many people in the theater. Go watch it, reeeeeeeeeee!!!

But yeah, if you have free time (go watch Kubo first) Box Trolls is alright-ish. I liked it on the first viewing, but even the first time I really disliked the designs. They were just gross and ugly, which isn't new for Laika, they intentionally made characters ugly in Coraline and ParaNorman. But this was a new level. Crooked teeth, disgusting scenes of characters eating cheese like chomp chomp, it for me was very squicky. And the female character was... Disturbing in the bad way. She seemed to have like a nightmare and gore fetish as she just seemed a bit too excited about the prospect of seeing Box Trolls eat a human and playing with their bones. A bit too enthusiastic... It was creepy...

I feel that sadly, this type of animation, turns a lot of viewers off.  It isn't right, but I think thats true.

Well, they are from Portland, and the saying there is "Keep Oregon Weird."  Hence why the show Gravity Falls took place in Oregon.

I think that too. :-\  It is too bad.  But this animation is still sticking around thanks to them and Aardman.  No one wants to do traditional animation for some reason, even though people still love it.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-08-29 22:17:34
I don't think it drives people away. Look at the grossing a of their movies. They're incredible. They get a lot of people watching their movies when they come out. They do a good job and it shows. If anything I feel people are drawn to their style because it's different, because it's not CGI. Sure some people are freaked out by claymation, but that was the old styled stuff where claymation was actually scary.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2016-08-29 22:19:46
Hate to break it to you... but making a $100-150 million is very low for a film.  Yes, it's a ton of money for their small studio which spends about $60 million, far less then most studios who spend double.  So they are making good money, but compared to most animated films, they are making far far less.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: RainySunshine on 2016-08-29 22:21:18
I had to go look.  They made a good amount of profit, but didn't actually make a lot of money compared to other animated films.  Even their biggest hit Coraline only made about $150 million in the box office.

EDIT: APD beat me to it.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-08-29 22:22:42
True, but it's not like they're tanking. And their movies are praised by critics. I mean, for a small studio, that's good. Sure it's not a lot more like big name studios, but big name studios are just that. Big name studios. They already captured their audiences and people go because it's the big name studio they trust to put forth quality films. Laika needs to continue to build that reputation. I think in general yeah, they might not make as much as Disney or Dreamworks, but they aren't at least driving people away from their films. I don't see anybody saying they won't see their movies just because it's claymation.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Rainberry on 2016-08-29 22:24:35
And this is how a small studio keeps growing, by performing consistently good films that are different, and they seem to be doing that.

You can argue now that Dreamworks and Blue Sky are just cookie cutter producing the Toyota's of films.  All bland and the same.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: RainySunshine on 2016-08-29 22:26:17
I meant no disrespect to Laika.  I want to see them succeed and start to compete in revenue from the big names.  Pixar still is unique, but they will risk becoming cookie cutter if they aim for just profits... I am worried with all the sequels DISNEY has forced them to do.

I've honestly never seen all of Alpha and Omega before. I got halfway through it when my family rented it but I had to do something else and by the time I got back my parents already returned it. I liked what I saw though. It isn't too good but it's a fun time if it isn't taken too seriously.

Anyone remember when movies stole millions upon millions of people's minds? Movies revolutionized entertainment. The original Star Wars, Jaws, the Harry Potter movies, Lord of the Rings, even Twilight and the Hunger Games series. So many people live for movies nowadays. It's cool to me how movies impact my life in small ways :)

Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2016-08-30 00:15:23
I just finished watching Alpha and Omega.

It was exactly what I hoped for.  It was extremely cute and I really enjoyed it.  There wasn't really any bad guys, it was just an adventure and love story, love for multiple characters.  It was really enjoyable and I love how wolves howling sounds like magic, and is beautiful to them. :)  That was a really cool twist.  Humphrey and Kate were really cute together, but man, those feels in there.  Knowing the girl you love is going to get married or doesn't think the same way about you, I know how that feeling hurts and it digs.  I really related.

I really like the white female wolf and that other alpha male.  It was so cute to see those two develop.

The visuals were good for this film, a blend of CGI and almost hand drawn backgrounds visuals.  It wasn't groundbreaking, but it was really enjoyable.

The film was put out by Lionsgate, a branch of Disney.  It's the branding that no one knows is tied to Disney because Disney's name is no where on it.  Sadly, many just say it is the brand that puts out film's Disney rejects and passes on to them to distribute.

I liked Alpha and Omega.  It was a fun story, fun adventure, cute characters, and I have the urge to do fan art of it.  I'm such a nerd.  I will give it an 'A' for tonight because it was an emotional up and down that I related too with love, and I really enjoyed it. :)

Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I actually really liked the white wolf, Kate's sister. She's so awkward and peppy and fun but in a way Shy. She gets embarrassed and feels foolish when she messes up. No doubt because there's at least some feelings of being overshadowed by her much more talented big sister. I also like her hair over her eye. Super cute. And the alpha male she hangs with, super funny, he can't sing lol. What a loser, and I say that in an endearing way.

But yeah, cute movie, not groundbreaking, but it's decent. For some reason, I think it's Humphrey's design that throws me off. I like Kate's design-ish, but something feels off to me. But it's cute and if you enjoyed it that's even better, APD. I didn't know Lionsgate was Disney affiliated. I just thought it was its own thing. How interesting. Disney really does own everything....

Title: Re: Movies In General

I would actually buy Kubo.
And I would buy Finding Dory solely because of Hank. I'm kinda obsessed with him. And Destiny. She's adorable.

But yeah, Kung Fu Panda 3 is a great movie, but I bought a pirate. I might buy Jungle Book, but I doubt it. I'd probably only rent it. In fact, I might only rent Finding Dory if I even do. But I would totally buy Kubo. I actually always legally buy Laika's films XD even box trolls. But my sisters bought that one, I didn't really like it.

I liked the movie, "Cars."  I didn't like Lightning McQueen or whatever his name was, but the car puns and their world I thought was really cool.  Too bad they made a horrible second movie...

I liked the story they told of "Exploring backgrounds" in Cars 1 and how sad it is to see all those old towns fade away on road maps with modern freeways bypassing them.

Living in Texas, S4 certainly knows of the small farming towns that are disappearing around him.  It's said. They once had so much promise and life, hope for a future, but so many are forgotten and histories lost.  That was my fav message from this film.  Try to explore them before they are gone, or try to help them in some way... I don't know how though.

S T E R E O T Y P E
(kinda)

Uh, yeah like, although they aren't really farming towns, there are a few really small towns that are kinda just like.... not really there, in a sense. Like, on the way to San Antonio, there's a place called "Encinal" and it's SUPER small from what I understand. And my town itself used to be really small, but it's been growing and growing since I was small. I don't think I can say the same for Encinal.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2016-09-03 23:13:59
Well, I mean there are towns, small ones, that just kind of fade away.  I know you live in one of Texas' big cities.  But even if you cross the border, many small Mexican villages are disappearing with time too.  People move out of these tiny towns, especially young ones who don't want to be farmers or whatever, and it leaves the parents and old folks as the last generations in these towns.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2016-09-03 23:18:00
You are right though, Encinal is shrinking, but lets look off the main highway, not on the thick lined roads.  Look at Asherton or Catarina, or even Oilton.  They are all shrinking and vanishing slowly but surely, census after census.  The people move to the bigger populated areas that have more opportunities, jobs, and services.  These small towns couldn't keep up and are disappearing.  Much of America's heartland is disappearing.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Miggs on 2016-09-03 23:18:27
Oh, yeah, that's a general thing though.

And yeah from what I know of Cars, it does go into that background pretty well. It's a neat take on it also, with the personification of the cars and such.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Silverwing on 2016-09-03 23:19:59
Shrinking towns is a big issue especially in rural states and counties.  They are seeing tax bases disappear and services disappear.  Some really rural counties are seeing not enough people stay to fill the need for the few jobs they have.  Who wants to live in the middle of nowhere to work for a small town hospital at lower pay?  It's a hard draw.  Also over time, the hospital may shut down due to lack of a need for it, or it costs too much to keep open, hence making the surviving population less inclined to live there with no health service and even harder to draw people in.  It is a downward spiral.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2016-09-03 23:21:01
Yeah, they do some neat art with cars.  A lot of car themed landscapes, or even the clouds.  You just have to notice it all.

And yeah, you are 100% right, Silver.

Why do conversations always happen when I go to sleep?

Cars is a weird one for me. I know objectively it's a pretty meh to bad movie. But subjectively, I enjoy the shit out of it with my dad. I've mentioned before it seems to be one of his favorite movies. We both seem to really enjoy the main characters suffering in the movie cu apparently we're both dicks XP we also do appreciate the background things, like the tread shaped clouds, or the little car bugs and other things. I think it's worth a watch, but it isn't Pixar's best movie. Not by a long run. But it's decent. It's good for kids and it's about good enough for adults. It isn't garbage like the second one.

It's a very lazy movie basically. It's not a good movie. It's entertaining enough, but the characters aren't like able and the story has been done to death before and Cars didn't add anything new to it. It's bland basically. It's not to the quality Pixar produces.

Hmmm.  Okay.

I thought the message MasterX brought up seemed pretty new, but yes, the other messages thrown in were bland.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-09-05 19:44:02
I mean, it wasn't really a message(?). It just shows what happens to small towns. Which I guess can be seen as a message but there's nothing you can really do to change that. Small towns will almost always lose to industrialism and the bigger and faster mentality people have as they advance.

I liked Cars.  I never understood the hate for it.

Cars was an ok movie. I liked it when it first came out, when I was 13 or 14. But looking back on it now, I just think it wasn't a very good movie to follow Pixar's last movie which was the incredibles. They FINALLY did a movie with human characters and then the next film is talking cars. It felt like a bit of a step back.

But plot wise and character wise, Cars was good.

True, true.  It was a bit lazy looking back on it, but I still liked it. :)
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-09-05 19:47:55
Yeah,  like I've said before. It's fine to love bad movies, but liking them doesn't make them good. And disliking a good movie doesn't make it bad. A lot of people seemed to enjoy it but it wasn't the best structured.

As for what Blurr said, I would say the quality was a step back, but I don't think it necessarily has to do with Pixar finally doing humans and then not. I've always seen Pixar better suited to non human characters.
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Soda on 2016-09-05 19:52:20
Pixar is more non-human oriented in my mind.  Hence why Brave didn't take off maybe?
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-09-05 19:54:55
Brave didn't take off? It unjustly won an award when it was pretty crap. Swooping in and snubbing two more well deserving movies of the award. Brave is boring. Characters aren't that deep. Merida is just a less interesting, more imature Belle. Free spirit, we get it.

Inside out was good. Then again the main focus wasn't really on the humans but rather the emotions.

I didn't really like Merida's character design.  I didn't find her pleasing to look at.  Not like "hotness" meter like that, but just her design.  It just didn't seem like a Pixar style.  Same with that film, "The Good Dinosaur."  I haven't seen that one yet, but it doesn't look right with the beautiful realistic backgrounds, and cartoony long neck and other realistic animals.

Inside Out was meh. It wasn't really groundbreaking and Emily or whatever her name was is kind of boring and flat.

I did like the message about needing sadness though. So many people try to avoid it, but it's an important emotion in our life. And we can't just ignore it. We as humans need to feel sadness.

Good Dinosaur is gorgeous. And then stupid at the same time.

I liked, Inside Out.  I thought it was cute, but it was more of a mature film then a kids film.  Zootopia actually was better, so one point for Disney over Inside Out for that year.

Inside Out had a great message.

You saw GDino?

Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-09-05 20:04:47
I like IO bu at the same time I don't. Neither it or Zootopia feel that great to me now looking back at them. They both feel to have some flaws no one really talks about. And just because it's mature doesn't mean it's a kids movie. Kids movies shouldn't just be sparkles and fun. I think it's good for kids films to have mature themes. It's important for them to see different things like that in media. Like in Bambi. Bringing to kids attention that life is precious, and at any moment someone you love can be taken from you.

I saw it. I loved the consistency of the injuries. I was expecting the scratches and bruises to disappear in the next shot but they were consistent and faded realistically. But I hate how the human is literally a dog. It's stupid. Like he pants like a dog, and is treated like a dog. It's pretty stupid. A human that evolved shouldn't have that good a sense of smell, and for gods sake, give it some canines.

Well, no. I just really appreciated how they took the time and effort to be consistent with them.
I liked the visuals, the water. But it seemed like a movie that just didn't know what it wanted to be.

I got that impression just by the previews.  It's like someone really wanted to stick with realism and someone else said we don't need realistic dino's too.  We don't need another Disney's Dinosaur!

(in bad David Spade voice)  I liked it the first time I saw it... when it was called "Herman's Head".

What about actors we don't see much of any more? Adam Sandler lent his voice to both Hotel Transylvania movies, but it's been a few years since he's done a real film (since Jack and Jill bombed, anyway). Brendan Frasier, who enjoyed some good success with the Mummy film series, dropped out of site since his execrable adaptations of George of the Jungle and Dudley Do-Right stank on celluloid.  Pauly Shore, after a few tepid comedies in the nineties, dropped off the map.  Owing to his bizarre behavior and a  failed MTV sketch comedy twenty ears ago, Andy Dick's reputation is as laughable as his surname. Speaking of former faded celebuturds, Tom Green's name is as absent as his testicle these days. A couple of box-office bombs, rumors of him crashing a bar mitzvah dressed as Hitler, and a disasterous brief marriage to Drew Barrymore have bumped Green's name off the star map.  And, aside from an ill-fated lawsuit against the search engine, who except old duffers like me remember Yahoo Serious, star of Young Einstein and Reckless Kelly?

He can do a good job.  It was his video game, and now he can tell the full story, instead of the very limited direction of the old game.  He will explain how things happened and it looks to be very action oriented, which would be great.

It was an old arcade game.  He animated the whole game, as the player plaid it.  Early gaming days, but still well animated.

He said on his kickstarter that he wanted to give it a full story and make it an action and adventure film.

Nick @ Nite was showing "The Last Airbender" movie tonight and I finally got to see it.  It saddened me because it was so broken up and had such horrible acting at times.  But the soundtrack was good and the visuals of the world were really good.  It is a shame, because this could have been a great movie, but the acting and poor script, and various events happen with no explanation.  It was such a shame that a world with so much lore was quickly zoomed over.  Stuff happened way to quickly, then the ending half of the movie happened slowly.  It had pacing issues... and I think tackling the whole first book in one film was too much to do.

I think they could still go for a second film, but it doesn't seem like that will happen, even though it did well in theaters (but got bad reviews).  Shame on what could have been a really cool series.

Brendan Frasier, who enjoyed some good success with the Mummy film series, dropped out of site since his execrable adaptations of George of the Jungle and Dudley Do-Right stank on celluloid.

Wait, you dare malign the good name of George of the Jungle (1997)?!?  A curse on thee!

(Granted, it was not, exactly, a *good* film.  But from Wikipedia: "Roger Ebert awarded the movie three out of four stars, praising the film as "good-natured" and complimenting the cast's comedic performances".  I think that fits -- it was a sweet (as in "kindly") kid's film.  I liked the fun they had with the narrator.  I liked the silly humor.  That said, I wasn't invested in the original George of the Jungle cartoons, so that may help.)

I've not seen The Last Airbender, but I saw a clip of a fight sequence, and something that stood out not mentioned above is the odd, dance-y choreography they used for the bending patterns, instead of the more martial-art-y shtick they had in the original.  Not a huge deal, but I've no idea why they chose to do it that way.  The whole sequence was visually interesting, but lacked dynamism and did not feel like a "real" fight (I felt that standard infantry would be pretty effective against the benders in the clip, whereas it seemed clear that infantry would be outclassed in the original).

New Pixar movie called Coco.  Trailer released today.  Nov 22, 2017 release date!

Also a new French, Canadian, and English film called, Leap!  In the US August 30, 2017.  From a rather new animation company that started in 2012.  L'Atelier Animation from Montreal.  I am excited to see them expand as they begin work on their second animated featured called, "The Bravest," which will explore the world of firefighters in 1930's New York City and tells the story of a 16-year-old girl who will have to become a hero in order to save her father.  But their current film, Leap, seems to bring back old world movie charm!  Very exciting.

Probably the biggest movie this weekend is Despicable Me 3.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 63% based on 119 reviews, with an average rating of 5.7/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Despicable Me 3 should keep fans of the franchise consistently entertained with another round of colorful animation and zany -- albeit somewhat scattershot -- humor." It is projected to gross $85–95 million in its opening weekend.

Baby Driver is apparently the next Edgar Wright production.  Wright's the director of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.  Pretty sure he also did Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

But, until I leaned that by happenstance, I was also entirely uninterested by the title "Baby Driver".  I think the name will do it a disservice at the Box Office.

I think it's a getaway driver movie, so there will be crime themes, and probably the protagonist trying to disassociate himself from it, etc.  Not usually the first thing I'd go see, but I might well do so now I know it's by Wright.

After the amazing car chase action of "The Driver"... after the thrilling sequences of "Drive"... here's the newcomer to the getaway driver genre...

BABY DRIVER!!

*people turn and walk away*

B-but guys... Baby Driver! ...c'mon...

I don't like the name.  It's a turn off, and so it the driver himself just based off looks.  I know thats lame, but it's true.

I love driver related films though.

It looks cool with car chases, police chases, guns, car stuff, but I am not interested in the teenie-bopper love romance.  The driver himself... bugs me with the name, "BABY."

Also for some movie ratings fun... Cars 3 has broke even with $175 million in the box office.

Baby Driver just broke even and is at $37 million.

Despicable Me 3 has destroyed at the box office with $203.3 million.  The film cost $80 million to produce.

THE HOUSE with Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler is a box office bomb.  Only $10 million. Cost them $40 million to make.

Spiderman: Homecoming dominates the movies this past weekend drawing in $117,000!  It is being reviewed by reviewers as the best Spiderman movie to date, or at least one of the best.

Despicable Me 3 came in second and Baby Driver was third.

How much as Baby Driver and DM3 brought in total?
Title: Re: Movies In General
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2017-07-10 19:41:14
TOTALS so far.

Despicable Me 3 - $149 million.

Baby Driver - $57 million.

Cars 3 is bringing in the lowest ever in a Pixar film I think, at $133 million.  I will have to look into that number.

Wonder Woman is at $368 million and Transformers 5 bombed with just $118 million total.

Cars 3 is not the worst, gross.  That belongs to "The Good Dinosaur."  Cars 3 actually had a good opening too and when all the worldwide data comes it, it will be better, but still low for a Pixar film.

Skyfall is better.  Spectre could have been good, but it was squandered.  It still had some good action scenes, but a lot of filler in-between and some wonky sound work.  Voices was too quiet, music and sound effects way too loud.

Here we go, Dunkirk is getting reviews as the "best movie of the year" and a true movie masterpiece.  Something that can't be said about anything else this year in film.

Well, there's always Sean Hannity's new movie. I hear it's very uplifting.

Progress has all but killed journalism in America, and I guess now it's taking down Hollywood.  I'm wondering how many stars will suffer because they appeared in films produced by Harvey Weinstein's corporation, which may mean a lot of Oscar snubs this year.  Even his own brother sees him as a d-bag.  The guy had a blanket pardon built into his contract to cover his sexual shenanigans.  Nice work if you can get it. How do I get in on that deal, huh?   ;)

After posting'em in Non Sequitur, Wolfwood suggested I post these here. Why not. :)

Allow me to show you a couple of old movie posters for Japanese releases of American movies.

This is the poster for the 1974 movie "Gone in 60 Seconds". Very realistic drawings of the cars featured in the movie (including the yellow Mustang, Eleanor, doing her 30 ft leap). They almost look real. Accurate depictions of scenes from the movie.

This one is for the 1977 movie "Speedtrap". Going by the title written below in Japanese, it seems they wanted to pass it as a sort of sequel to "Gone". But you can't blame them. The plots of both movies are somewhat similar. Once more, the artwork on this poster is amazing, even though some of it is recycled from the poster for "Gone". Yet again, we get accurate depictions of scenes from the movie, including a flying red Jensen Interceptor in the foreground.

Yes. Yes, I am indeed impassioned. And loving it. ;D

I love how they drew like that in the 70s and early 80s.  It's very cool and an awesome way to make posters of anything!  I love how those classic cars look.  Look at that awesome Continental on the second poster!  Very interesting how they re-used some of the car drawings, and then added in others.  Remember this was time before it was as easy as Photoshop.

Exhibitors Should Allow Digital Releases for Mid-Tier Films After 30-Day Window, Analyst Says
Article Source (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/exhibitors-should-allow-30-day-digital-window-mid-tier-films-analyst-says-1296628)

Universal and Warners have "greater financial incentives ... given their vertical integration with pay TV distributors, while Disney is "highly dependent on healthy theatrical distribution," says Credit Suisse.
Exhibition companies should consider allowing premium VOD releases of mid-tier films after a 30-day theatrical window, Credit Suisse analyst Meghan Durkin said in a Monday report entitled "Not Coming to a Theater Near You: Do Theater Companies Need to Entertain a PVOD Window?"

"After a decade of talk, premium VOD is becoming a reality," she wrote. "With the highly uncertain landscape created by the COVID-19 crisis, media and studio management teams — many of them new in their roles — face a range of unknowns as theaters get set to resume operations around the globe. Large tentpole films are tentatively scheduled for release beginning in mid-July, but with little visibility on consumer willingness to go out to theaters, even with social distancing protocols and seating capacity reduced to 50 percent or less."

She highlighted streaming usage spikes due to shelter-in-place orders "just as new studio heads are looking for ways to more aggressively innovate for the future, including building out and leveraging streaming platforms," adding, "These dynamics have caused a few studios to bypass theaters with some films and try direct to home video in the U.S. (with some success)."

The National Association of Theatre Owners responded to Universal expressing pleasure with the PVOD results of Trolls World Tour amid the novel coronavirus pandemic that such releases should not be interpreted as a sign of a "new normal" for Hollywood. And AMC Theatres said it would not screen Universal films due to the dispute.

Cinema owners "have resisted the PVOD pressure, but global theater closures have all parties rethinking business models," the analyst added. "Unless films can shift to PVOD 30 days post theatrical while consumer awareness is still high, in the current environment we believe studios are more likely to bypass theaters with mid-tier films, whether straight to PVOD or to streaming."

She concluded: "In the end, that would hurt both theaters and studios, as many become outsized success stories (Joker, The Greatest Showman, Deadpool) and can even spawn future franchises."

Durkin noted that consumers are spending less on home video overall, but spending in the earliest window — premium priced electronic sell through — has increased, which he argued is "potentially a good sign for PVOD."

The Credit Suisse analyst's report also highlighted that studio strategies vary at Hollywood conglomerates. "Disney is squarely in the blockbuster business, while the more diverse slates at Universal, and Warner Bros. allow for PVOD experimentation," she said. "We also found greater financial incentives for PVOD with Universal and Warner Bros. given their vertical integration with pay TV distributors (keeping 100 percent of PVOD revenue in those homes, versus 70 percent typically) and given their lower box office splits than Disney."

In terms of Hollywood stocks, Durkin said this means that he sees "studios with vertically integrated distribution like Universal (Comcast) and Warner Bros. (AT&T) as capturing outsized PVOD economics versus a Paramount (ViacomCBS) or a Sony (Sony Corp.), while Disney’s mega-blockbuster strategy is highly dependent on healthy theatrical distribution and might continue to eschew a PVOD window."

LightShed Partners analyst Richard Greenfield in a report on Monday similarly wrote that for "commercial films that do not have blockbuster potential, we continue to see a steady stream move to PVOD, particularly from Universal. … We have also seen studios look to sell off titles to third-party SVOD platforms, including Netflix, Amazon and Apple (Paramount’s Lovebirds to Netflix, Universal/Blumhouse’s Run Sweetheart Run to Amazon and Sony’s Greyhound to Apple)."

Referring to the July 17 theatrical release date for Warner Bros.' Christopher Nolan film Tenet and the July 24 release for Disney's Mulan, Greenfield also argued: "In reality, Christopher Nolan and Disney’s attempt to save theaters might just accelerate their demise. That said, with windows likely to emerge from COVID-19 far shorter than 90 days, early PVOD windows becoming more normalized and more films going direct-to-consumer via SVOD, the future of theatrical exhibition looks grim at best, even if studios hold off on releasing films into theaters. Movie theaters simply cannot survive on 15-20 superhero/animated/event pictures a year, they need a steady flow of films of all sizes and genres."

Well this is movie related... even if it was from the 1980s...

'Serial entrepreneur' buys 'Goonies' house, listed at $1.7M

Article Source (https://www.king5.com/article/news/nation-world/goonies-house-in-oregon-bought/507-d975bde9-831b-4229-9d56-8cd727459389)

The listing agent for the Victorian home featured in “The Goonies” in Astoria, Oregon, said this week the likely new owner is a fan of the classic coming-of-age movie about friendships and treasure hunting, and he promises to preserve and protect the landmark.
The 1896 home with sweeping views of the Columbia River flowing into the Pacific Ocean was listed in November with an asking price of nearly $1.7 million.

Jordan Miller of John L. Scott Real Estate said the sale is expected to close in mid January, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported. The new owner, a self-described 'serial entrepreneur,' will make his name known at that time, Miller said.

Since the movie came to theaters in 1985, fans have flocked to the home in northwestern Oregon’s historic port of Astoria. The city celebrates Goonies Day on June 7, the film’s release date, and welcomes thousands of people for the event.
An offer was accepted six days after the house was listed, according to public record.

Seller Sandi Preston is passing along movie memorabilia she has collected or has been given, and some of the furniture in the home, restored to its original 1896 style, may also be sold to the buyer, according to Miller.

Preston was known to be largely welcoming to visitors. But she lived in the house and the constant crowds were a strain that prompted her at times to close it to foot traffic.
After the film’s 30th anniversary drew about 1,500 daily visitors in 2015, Preston posted “no trespassing” signs prohibiting tourists from walking up to the property. She reopened it to the public in August.

Based on a story by Steven Spielberg, the film features a group of friends fighting to protect their homes from an expanding country club and threats of foreclosure. In the process, they discover an old treasure map that leads them on an adventure and allows them to save their “Goon Docks” neighborhood.

Well, I finally got around to sharing the movie the dragon came from. It's called Hidden Dragon, and judging from the trailer, it's about a naive young dragon in an underwater city who finds a human and helps it escape somehow.

Maybe a time-traveler from the future comes and whisks the wholesome fifties teens into 2023, where they experience wild culture shock? Actually, that's not far off from some of the stuff the comics actually did at one point....

I've been watching the trend of Hollywood movies making less and less money year in and year out.  It's wonderful.

We also had the pandemic, that took a hit.

But theaters as a whole have been fighting declines for about a decade now.

Now the writers are on strike and the actors aren't far behind them. Hollywood is about to enter a period that can only truly be defined as, "A clusterfuck."

Hollywood is so out of touch and beyond the real reality anyways.  They need a good shake-up to come back to their senses.  They are so far up their own butts.

Good to see.

Indie faith-based thriller 'Sound of Freedom' surpasses $100M in box office earnings, could soon surpass major studio films
Article (https://komonews.com/news/entertainment/indie-faith-based-thriller-sound-of-freedom-surpasses-100m-in-box-office-earnings-could-soon-surpass-major-studio-films-jim-caviezel-angel-studios#)

A low-budget, faith-based thriller is an unlikely box office hit, crossing $100 million in earnings despite only playing in North America.

“Sound of Freedom” starring Jim Caviezel is the 16th-highest grossing film so far and could move further up the list, further surpassing big studio films like “Scream VI” and “The Flash.”

The film’s production budget was partially crowdfunded by Utah-based Angel studios, which has used unconventional promotional tactics like creating an app to allow people to buy tickets to donate to others. It has also been billed as a way to raise awareness about child trafficking.

“SOUND of FREEDOM has become the people’s movie. It was chosen by over 100,000 people in the Angel Guild, fueled by untold tens of thousands through our Pay it Forward program, and is dominating the box office as the result of a ground-up, grassroots movement of everyday people who are making this an historic success,” Jared Geesey, SVP of global distribution with Angel Studios, said in a statement. “This is the opposite of the top down system developed by Hollywood gatekeepers. We are empowering people to be part of choosing, funding, and sharing stories that amplify light and impact culture.”

Angel Studio’s description of the film says it is based on a true story about a federal agent who learns the sister of a boy he rescued from child traffickers is still being held captive and goes on a mission deep into the Colombian jungle to save her.

The film has received positive reviews, with a 76% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 100% audience score.
