Raya and the Last Dragon.

March 2021.  Another Disney film with a female protagonist who kicks can.

But for some reason, the visuals at times seem pretty average.  Is that just me?

I have to say, it doesn't look that interesting from my point of view either.

It looks average so far.

Visually it doesn't have much to go "wow" at like previous Disney CGI animations.

I wish they'd go back to 2D animation...

I'm sure it will draw in crowds as Moana did.

But if this film takes place in China, it will definitely draw controversy due to Disney being hand in hand with a Community country.  That is the state of things now and this kind of stuff draws controversy.

I have lost interes in Disney ever since they went away from 2D animation.  Sure they've had some good films, but they just aren't the same as the 2D cartoons.  Now they just blend in with everyone else's computer animated cartoons.

Disney's "Raya and the Last Dragon" was released March 5th, 2021 and is getting mixed to positive reviews.  They might not make up the $100 million it took to make this film.  They've made only $30 million back so far.

Seen it.  Retread whiff.  Did anyone else get a Mulan vibe from the previews?  Or am I being ethnically insensitive because it's a different part of China with a whole different culture and mythos and cuisine and I don't recognize the subtle nuances, or something?

I totally got Mulan vibes from the trailers.

Disney has really been stroking China's... ego lately with their films.  I am sure the Party is pleased to have another American giant in their pockets.

I'm not sure where this film takes place, I heard mythical lands based on "southern Asia" but I've also heard it's based on Chinese culture too.  I haven't seen it, so I can't really say.

Raya got like ZERO advertising.  It's like the film was buried by Disney.  They also released it the same day as the big WandaVision event.

So lets see, some of he future animated films coming...

Oh... there is only one we know of.

The 60th film produced by the Disney Animation studio, will be directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, co-directed by Charise Castro Smith and written by Bush and Castro Smith with songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

It is called ENCANTO.

It sounds like it will be a latin-American/Hispanic vibe to it.  But we really know nothing about it.

The name and the person they choose to make the music makes me think it will be Latin-American in nature.

We should start learning about it soon as it's planned for a Nov 24, 2021 release.

Raya and the Last Dragon released on March 5, 2021.  It's been almost a month so lets see how the movie did... Not good.

The Pandemic made the theater release poor and the streaming release at $30 bucks a pop didn't do well.

The films budget was 100 million plus, but so far they've recouped only $90.5 million.

As of March 28, 2021, Raya and the Last Dragon has grossed $28.4 million in the United States and Canada, and $62.1 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $90.5 million.  Very poor home showing.  Very poor worldwide showing.

Three theater chains, Cinemark and Harkins in the United States alongside Cineplex in Canada, did not run the film after declining Disney's rental terms, which led to Raya and the Last Dragon failing to match the opening weekend grosses of The Croods: A New Age and Tom & Jerry, two other animated films released amid the pandemic.  Ouch.

Parents and kids made up a combined 52% of the opening weekend audience (with 57% being female), with 37% being non-Hispanic White, 22% Black, 21% Asian, and 20% Hispanic.

Many complaints for the actor who plays the dragon for being exceedingly annoying and a lot of people didn't like the modern lingo in a world that wasn't supposed to be modern.
