What's with this new trend remaking earlier Disney films with blacks, Hispanics, and Asians filling roles originally played by white actors? I suppose it's good that we're now seeing actors of color voicing positive, wholesome non-European characters, sure... but did we really need a redux of
Lion King boasting an all-black cast, or Will Smith as Genie in
Aladdin? I mean, at least say something
new, instead of some inferior shot-for-shot GGI remake of a movie I remember fondly from my youth. It's really all quite boring and uninspired.
And now I hear talk of
a Little Mermaid film starring an African-American actress in the works. Like the
Aladdin reboot, it'll be live-action/CGI, and Ariel will have "some more power" (whatever the hell that means).
Yet interestingly, the guy Ariel falls madly in love with and gives up everything for?...
Still white! "Woke"? More like
joke. Yet, it gets better. Ariel's pal Scuttle is now a
female sea-bird
played by an Asian-American actress best known for singing about her lady-bits. And, soo-
prize, soo-
prize, the villain is played by
a fat white girl... Hey, didn't she already stink it up in the
last reboot of a beloved franchise she starred in? ...Dammit, they should have gotten the black tranny from
the new Rocky Horror flick as Ursula. I bet he/she could sing the
crap out of the musical numbers.
I say avoid this warmed-over fish turd and go rent/stream the original animated Disney film... or, if you
must see a mermaid of color today, check out
The Belch Dimension Comics #35. I was ahead of the curve, like, 13 years ago.
