Okay...so, one of the cartoons I'm looking at this week for my
new blog series about classic animation: Terrytoon's "Seeing Ghosts".
If you're thinking it looks familiar, you're right: the setup and characters are quite similar to
"Scaredy Cat" (Jones, 12/18/48). I'm wondering if Paul Terry hadn't heard tell of a rival studio having a "haunted house" cartoon in the works and fast-tracked his own inferior clone through the pipeline just to get it in theaters a few months ahead of Warner Bros. Just a cynical theory on my part, but, really, I'm surprised there weren't a lot more lawsuits in the animation business back then. Maybe people just had more class back then, or maybe they figured Terry's studio was too small-potatoes to start
another legal wrangle with.
