Title: Retro Shows (70-80-90s)
Post by: Umeko on 2016-12-31 04:05:20
I thought I'd make this, were we can dive into some nostaliga of what shows people like myself grew up with.

I'm going to start off with a couple I want to share:

First of some clips from the first two episodes of MLP:

First intro to the very first ever episode of MLP.
I remember I rented these from the video store.
Sadly many of these characters were never seen again, only a couple were revived in FiM.

One thing I really miss seeing are the varieties of ponies, like the sea ponies

I was higly disappointed in Tirek in FiM, cause he used to be so intimidating and well done

A clip from episode two Escape from Catrina

Another show I used to watch a lot was Rainbow Brite

My favorite character in this show was a horse named Skydancer, here's his first apperance
This clip is from the movie: Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer

Looking forwards to see what people will post here :3

Beetlejuice.
Bravestarr.
CHUCK NORRIS: Karate Commandos!
Captain Planet.
G.I. Joe.
Garfield and Friends.
A Pup Named Scooby Doo.
The Pound Puppies.
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show.
Thunder the Barbarian.
Thundercats.
SWAT Cats.
Transformers.

Can we also agree though that  early 90s/ and 80s cartoon's had the best songs and really fun intro's?

Ghostbusters!  What a catchy theme and I liked the human character designs!

Thundercats!  Look at all the crazy action going on here!

They don't make music or intro's like this anymore.  This was excellent in every way, thanks to the GALAXY RANGERS!  I love how so many 80s shows had intro's that just explained everything.  Lol!

Gummi Bears wasn't a show I watched, but it did start the Disney renaissance in animation.  It led to all the classics in the 90's you all remember.

Inspector Gadget has one of the most memorable intro's.

One of the few good cartoon's to have actually come from Canada with good animation for the most part and a good intro, good series.

A show I've always wanted to see, but never have, is called the Moomin's.  It is a Finnish cartoon, yep!  From Finland based on lore and what not.

The Adventure's of Tin Tin was another I loved growing up!  The theme song had so much emotion and class to it, as well as urgency.

The Moonins! Pretty cute.
I watched Garfield and friends, even though I wasn't alive until '97 haha.

I'm so happy someone else brought up TinTin!  I love that series!  It had mystery and adventure, and was done really well!  I want to see that film that came out in 2011.  Anyone seen that?

The movie? It was eeeeeeehhh. Not the greatest, but I don't know if it holds true to the show. I didn't watch the show so *shrug* on its own it was okay.

Well, actually, both the show AND the movie were based on a Belgian comic book series. That's what Tintin originally was, a comic book. So it was more about being faithful to the comics than to the show. ;)

Since we're talking shows with epic intros here are a few I like a lot:

Sonic cause well Sonic :D

MASK

Denver *I personally love this a lot*

Biker Mice From Mars - This was one of my drugs as a kid!

Transformers!

Swat Katz *Second season opening*

Back then the shows were heavily influenced by anime, easy to just look at the cast list and the animators will all be from japan :3 or korea
And the music is heavily influenced by rock :3 which I don't mind one bit, being a metal head and all :P

This seems like the kind of topic that NostradamustheSeer will have a field day in.

Well if it counts, if you watch HR Pufnstuf from the 70's - the living/talking house on that show had an impressive sneeze. XD

Have you ever watched "Love, American Style? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love,_American_Style)"  It was a comedy romance cartoon with varying different segments. Some claim it is the first American adult-oriented cartoon.  I recently stumbled upon this episode online. It stars Richard Dawson (Melvin Danger), Cynthia Adler, Mitzi McCall (Tangerine Glick), Bob Holt (Williams).

The animation is surprisingly very smooth for a 1970s show in an era of cutting corners.  I am sure @NostradamusTheSeer has seen it or heard of it?  Any input?

I'd never actually seen it, but I'd heard of it. This short was one of only two shorts to be animated rather than live-action. The latter, "Love and the Old-Fashioned Father", was a backdoor pilot for a Hanna-Barbera, series Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home" which I did see, and enjoyed. The season three finale later was the springboard for that iconic series Happy Days, which made Henry "Fonzie" Winkler a household name. "Heyyyyyyyyyyyy."

Actually, I did several blogs on Saturday morning cartoons, where I took a look at some of the network's offerings--things I remember from when I was growing up, and a few I missed the first time around.

A few praises; some pans; a few "That was a show?  I didn't just pass out drunk one night and dream that thing?"s.  What's really weird is watching some of my fav old shows now, knowing what often went on, untold, behind the scenes.  I just saw the Dark Side of Comedy episode about Dustin Diamond--the true star, for my money, of Saved By The Bell--and, damn, Screech had some demo-oooooooo-ons.....   [sadpat]

All interesting stuff. I don't really have much to add, but I did learn some stuff here.  Thanks.

Recently watched a few episodes of "Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home."  It wasn't bad. It's weird seeing a more grounded, down to earth telling of American life back then instead of the more fairytale approach.

Yup! It did it for me! Also learned there are no limits to fantasy and that makes great storytelling

The 80s seemed so much more willing to try totally new things out in their cartoons.

The 80s, even the late 80s were a wondrous time.  Even beyond the shows, the music was stellar!  Everyone was happy, at at the end of the decade, it was a bright future for the world.
