Title: Happy Thanksgiving!
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-11-24 07:29:12
Thanksgiving. It's a national holiday celebrated in Canada and the United States, and a few other U.S territories. As we all know, it was originally celebrated as a day of giving thanks for the blessings of the harvest and of the preceding year in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The 'first' Thanksgiving in the new world.

Nowadays, it's day that brings family and friends together, and be thankful for everything we have and for  the company we share it with. And let's not forget the bountiful food we all eat! I know college kids are thankful to be going back home for some delicious home cooked meals.

What are you thankful for PSF members? And what's your Thanksgiving dinner like?

A Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

It's a "standard" dinner, usually. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce.

I'm thankful for my friends and family, and that all my military friends are doing good.

I'm....at work!  So thankful for holiday pay?
My thanksgiving dinner was on Sunday.  Standard stuff, highlights was the turkey was fresh cause I have a poultry farm nearby so no frozen bird or anything like that and I made a ton of appetizers.  My family all met up for it, it's become a tradition because I always work on Thanksgiving so I started having a dinner that Sunday prior.

Thankful for having all the blessing I have.  Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and to those first pilgrims who sailed from England to have their religious freedom!  Thank you friendly Squanto for helping them make corn.

I'm thankful for so much, but here are some key ones.

I am thankful for my family, friends, you guys, this country, our Constitution, our relative safety and success.  We have the opportunity to be what we want, something most don't have.  We have freedoms, also something most do not have.  So we really are blessed.  Happy Thanksgiving.

Turkey.  That's what I've got my mind set on.  A big plate of turkey, cranberries and that oh so delicious STUFFING.  You can't go wrong with a mouthful of stuffing.  Also that green bean casserole and whatever else there is... sweet potatoes?  Is that a thing?  Yams?  Same?

I'm ready for the food.

I've never experienced Thanksgiving since we don't have it here in Germany, and until now, the only thing I knew was that it's in November, families celebrate together and have a turkey meal, and I figured it has something to do with being grateful for a good harvest, which is actually something people here do as well in some regions, it's called "Erntedankfest" = harvest thanks celebration, but it's not a big event. And also, I remember the nice and funny scene from the movie "Eat Pray Love" when the main character (played by Julia Roberts) introduces Thanksgiving to her Italian friends in Italy - they prepared loads of food but forgot about the frozen turkey so they put it in the oven late at night and had it for breakfast the next morning...  :D (I don't know if that was actually part of the true story or just made up for the movie, but I like it anyway) And I really liked the way how, at the table, everybody talked about something they were grateful for. Is this usual at Thanksgiving?

So, today I did a little reading and learned for the first time that the tradition goes back to the first people who settled in Massachusetts and had a hard time in winter so they got help from the Native American people, and finally they all celebrated together the very first Thanksgiving in 1621 - exactly 400 years ago!

Without this forum I guess I'd never be interested in finding out more about things and events like that. So, this is a place where we all can learn from each other. I like that!  :)
Title: Re: Happy Thanksgiving!
Post by: Wolfwood on 2021-11-14 16:22:38
Yeah, you pretty much summed it up.  The first European settlers, who we often call, "the pilgrims," celebrated the first Thanksgiving together.  The pilgrims struggled with the harsh winters of the east coast and the native Americans helped them be successful.  Historically, the first thanksgiving was to be thankful for the harvest and abundant supplies as you head into winter.  You would thank God for the harvest and family health, well being, etc.

Today, the prototypical Thanksgiving is gathering with family and friends and having pretty much the same meanings as the past.  Clearly, not everyone is a farmer today, but we are lucky to have the luxuries we have.  So people will give thanks to God, and overall be very pleased as they enjoy their meals.

The traditional Thanksgiving meal in the US is had at night, not in the morning.  Though because it is such a large meal, people tend to have a lighter meal in the beginning of the day (often skipping breakfast or lunch).  This lighter meal is often just called brunch.  This can be had with family and friends as well, but isn't the same with everyone.

The big meal comes in the evening, aka, "Thanksgiving Dinner" or "Thanksgiving Feast."  Traditionally people who are not famers will go to the grocery store or local farmers market to buy a fresh or frozen turkey.  The turkey size varies depending on how many guests you plan to have.  The turkey is often filled with a tasty treat called, "Stuffing."  Stuffing various by person, usually a family has their own favorite recipe.  In short, the stuff is usually based on a broth, bread crumbs, celery, carrots, and spices.

With the turkey people often include green beans, vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, (usually steamed or baked).  The vegetable mix is usually always a autumn mix.  Another side is rather peculiar, but just cranberries, either fresh or canned.  It goes great with turkey for some reason.  Another staple of the meal is gravy.  Every family has a traditional form of gravy they like to make.  Potatoes are also very common, or a mixed rice pilaf type dish.

Dessert varies, but a pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream on top is common.  An alternative is sweet potato pie.

And that is the average American Thanksgiving.  Canada has their own Thanksgiving which is pretty much a direct lift of the American one, but on a different day.  But now more and more Canadian's also celebrate the American Thanksgiving day too, because... who doesn't want to have another delicious feast with family and friends?

@Wolfwood , thank you for the detailed description! It's nice to read, and very appetizing...  ;D

I just remembered another little glimpse of Thanksgiving I got on German TV some time ago when I happened to see an episode of "Little House on the Prairie" (German title: "Unsere kleine Farm" = Our little farm) dealing with Thanksgiving. I can't remember anything about the plot, but I remember there were Johnny Cash and June Carter as guest stars, and Johnny Cash was playing the guitar and singing a song about Thanksgiving which I liked.
Funny how memories like that suddenly pop up in your mind.  :)

Hell, I'm already seeing TV ads for a Christmas event scheduled somewhere on Nov 11. I've already ranted plenty about going out to pre-Black Friday sales on Thursday night when I'm still digesting a bellyful of turkey and stuffing. I don't neeed to trot out to see Santa a whole seven weeks before Christmas. That's still Indian summer in my neck of the woods--a time for drippy pits, raking and burning autumn leaves, and football.

Seriously, haven't had my first bite or turkey and stuffing yet, not even a dollop o' cranberry jelly, even, and already while I'm out at the store gathering ingrediants for my boffo nut mix (https://psfforum.com/index.php?topic=1094.msg492548#msg492548),  I'm hearing Christmas songs playing over the Muzak. Time was they at least waited 'til after the big meal, exactly one minute after midnight following the pre-Black Friday sales, to start ring-ting-jinglin' those bells.  I've heard this song in no less than three different Christmas movies, and it seems to be so popular it has covers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Wrapping#Covers) now. Feh. I think my local chain supermarket is successful enogh to spring for the original, don't you...?

So how was everyone's thanksgiving feast this year?  What was the best dish?

This year my favorite dish is a tie.  We made 'dressing' instead of stuffing (same stuff but kept it out of the turkey in the side) and the mashed potatoes were heavenly this year!  Best I've ever had.

I got to experience an American Thanksgiving!!! Such a wonderful people and country!  For two and a half weeks, I got to explore the country!  First I landed in LA then flew in to Seattle to get a cruise to Alaska!  Absolutely spectacular!  What a beautiful country.  The glaciers are amazing and the small villages in Alaska have so much charm.  Once I got back to Seattle, I stayed there a couple days exploring the surrounding areas of Washington, and took a ferry boat to some beautiful towns.  From Seattle I had an American road trip down to Portland and along Highway 101 down the Oregon Coast.  I eventually made it to San Francisco and down the coast to beautiful towns like San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and eventually back to LA to fly home.  I am exhausted but SOOOOOooo happy!  It was an experience I will always remember and I can't wait to go back to the US!  I feel I didn't have enough time to see it all and I want to go back.
