Title: Nostalgia Critic
Post by: Blurr on 2016-02-09 22:03:00
For anyone who is a fan of the nostalgia critic, here is is latest review. In honor of the late David Bowie, he reviewed Labyrinth. He didn't do it last month because he dedicated all of January to reviewing M. Night Shyamalan stuff.

The movie wasn't anything to write home about.  Never cared for the muppets, I never found them funny.  To each their own.

The most disturbing thing in the Labyrinth movie that never goes away are Bowie's pants...

I actually participated in one of his contests but I didn't even come close to getting featured, lol.

*shrug* Oh well. I don't think I stood a chance anyhow, everyone Photoshopped something or looked pretty professional. One guy just had a blank white space with glasses and a tie. XP Creative.

Not a fan  of NC, but enjoyed Labyrinth.  Bowie was such a charismatic guy, and he owned that Goblin King role.

Plus, y'know, Jennifer Connelly running.  Mmm.

I thought this guy was over several years ago.  Didn't know he still did stuff.  based on his current stuff, he is only a shell of his former popularity, but still a hell of a lot more popular then me!

He said in his comment. He's not /as/ popular as he was in his hayday.

I honestly think he's even more popular. He has his own website, where his content and the rest of his team posts, he has a budget, a studio, and a crew. It used to be just him in front of a camera with minimal effects. Now it's become what he does to make a living with.

I hate how all his new videos are about 15 minutes longer than they need to be because he has an annoying sidekick showup with a dumb skit.   When it's just him its a lot funnier.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Critic
Post by: Blurr on 2016-08-04 21:20:18
I actually like the skits. Sure when its just him its classic and he talks more about the movie. But the skits can be funny too. Especially the ones with Santa Christ. Hell even the firebending battle with Dante Basco was awesome.

They're not all bad, but I find myself rolling my eyes and fastforwarding more often than not.  I like how he cleverly rips a movie apart and edits it.
Then again,  HonestTrailers does it better and quicker.

I hate it when shows and reviews can be done in 4 minutes, and some people go on and on about it for like fifteen minutes.  That is why I don't watch most of this kind of stuff.

You can like him.  I'm not prying on that.  Just from what he used to do, he isn't as good in my opinion.  His comedy just isn't there, he complains and yells way too much, and takes to long to get to the point of stuff.  Based off trends, he is on the decline (https://www.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=nostalgia%20critic).

Wait a second... wouldn't this topic go in the shows board?
Title: Re: Nostalgia Critic
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-08-05 05:41:21
Wasn't that where he uploaded originally? His own website. Which is why even his old videoed have the "The guy with the glasses" mark. But yeah, he's gotten a higher budget. A lot of people I've seen on YouTube comments dislike how he constantly mixes in his friends and stuff into the reviews, some liked when it was just him with the occasional guest pop in.

I don't care, as long as it's funny. But sometimes his friends aren't /that/ funny. Not as much as him. And that's perhaps also why people say he's a "shell" of his former self.

And nah, Wolf. He has his own topic for a raisin.

One thing I will probably mark NC down for... he does those 'Sibling Rivalry' videos with his brother. Sometimes they provide some nice and good input while not acting or in character, whathaveyou, but his brother Rob can be pretty annoying at times.

I'm kinda glad he's re-posting some older videos; his newer ones can be hit or miss.

Ooh, the horrendous 9-month bump.

Just felt like saying, I watched these:

It's incredible how bad AND disrespectful those movies were. It was so funny. XD

I remember the first two were brought up here. The third one was also brought up, but a month before the NC reviewed it.

Anyone know what is happening?  I am getting tons of videos showing this guy and him "Falling from grace."  I am seeing a ton of hate on him and his channel and what they are doing.  Anyone know what happened?  Did some scandal happen? I don't want to click on these vids cause I don't watch this guy anyways. Some are saying he is a horrible person in the titles!

This is a quite a chunk to read.  Mainly mis-management, sexual harassment, bad content, and stupidity.

Between October 2014 through January 2015, long-time content producers Jacob Chapman, Allison Pregler, Lindsay Ellis, Phelan Porteous and Andrew Dickman left Channel Awesome. Upon leaving, Allison Pregler accused the site management of abusing talent, hypocrisy and scamming nearly $90,000 from fans with an Indiegogo campaign. Pregler also claimed to have been fired for not answering a Skype call with Channel Awesome CEO Michael Michaud, who accused her of ignoring him when she didn't respond to his message within the first 15 minutes. Pregler cited many problems behind the management of Channel Awesome and the lack of communication between the Chicago division of the company and the outside content producers. Pregler stated she was yelled at by management for putting up mid roll ads on her videos and was not allowed to promote her Patreon, despite other users being allowed to do so. She also shared screenshots of her conversations with both Michaud and Robert Walker, the latter of whom said the Patreon links were "a non-negotiable point" and "a slap in the face" to the fans. Following Pregler's dismissal, Phelan Porteous informed Robert Walker of his own departure. Porteous claimed Michaud retaliated by deleting all 6 years of his videos from the site without warning. Jacob Chapman also cited a lack of communication for his departure.

Now here is the new stuff.

In March 2018, several former producers alleged via a series of Twitter posts mismanagement and mistreatment by members of the company's upper-management, including the Walker brothers and CEO Mike Michaud. The allegations include a history of sexist comments and verbal abuse by Michaud toward female producers, sale of producer-made artwork without financial compensation, mismanagement of content on the website, and a regular failure to properly communicate with producers or address grievances.

Holly Christine Brown, who served as head administrator and Director of Human Resources, alleges that following a summary dismissal after a surgery, her severance pay was withheld until she signed a contract prohibiting her from seeking employment at another production company for a period of 2-4 years. Brown further alleges that chief operating officer Mike Ellis repeatedly threatened her following his dismissal from the company. Then-producer Lindsay Ellis during the production of the film To Boldly Flee, was repeatedly pressured into performing looping for a scene in which her character is raped off-screen. Due to Ellis' protests over the scene's content, Doug Walker rewrote it to her "being assaulted". Ellis alleges that she was forced to perform the scene under intimidation. Producer Dan Olson alleges wrongful dismissal after he uploaded a video critical of the Gamergate controversy. Further complaints surrounded the alleged misallocation of $90,000 in funds compiled as part of an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. Soon afterwards, #ChangeTheChannel began trending on Twitter.

In response to the complaints, several producers – including Lewis Lovhaug (Linkara), Todd Nathanson (Todd in the Shadows) and Mike Jeavons (MikeJ) – have since left the company. In his departure video, Jeavons expressed his frustration with Channel Awesome management and claimed information was often withheld from the content creators. Todd in the Shadows responded to the criticisms on Twitter claiming "I have seen no lies".

As of April 2, 2018, the grievances have been compiled and made public via a document published in Google Drive. Among them is an anonymous allegation of sexually predatory behavior, including grooming, by an unnamed producer for the website. The accuser, an 18-year-old Jane Doe, further alleges that after informing Channel Awesome management about the abuse, the producer was dismissed within a period of approximately a year. The official Channel Awesome Facebook and Twitter pages issued a response stating that they wanted what was best for their channel and are taking steps to improve their communications with producers. The statement was criticized by fans and former Channel Awesome producers as they felt the company was not apologizing or taking responsibility for their wrongdoings. Shortly after the statement, more producers including Matthew Buck (Film Brain), Chris Stuckmann, Tony Goldmark (Some Jerk With a Camera), Brian Heinz (The Last Angry Geek), Dominic Smith (The Dom), Heather McDonald (Calluna), and Nash Bozard announced their departure from the website, with some citing the website's poor response to the controversy as being part of the deciding factor to leave. The 10th anniversary video they were planning for the channel was cancelled as a result of the controversy. The backlash led to a drop of over 15,000 subscribers within days after the document's release.

And a full video essay of the situations leading up to this point.  It goes very in-depth.

When you read the document, a lot of it is petty.  I am not sure why they are just NOW attacking this website and the people on it, especially since it has been irrelevant for years  They signed a deal and understood the arrangement.  But what cannot be forgotten is his egotistical behavior and lack of responding to sexual harassment and more.  Of course Doug Walker got special treatment (many complain about this) but he was their biggest brand name.  You focus on what draws in people.

There is also a lot of other negative things such as the "Gatorade incident" in which they didn't help someone who fainted on the set.  There are many other negatives in the document, such as complaints about writing... but that is writing, not something serious like the sexual harassment and bad management and possible money stealing.  There is definitely scummy stuff in the document.

I think this story is being blown out of proportion for the most part, but there is definitely some bad stuff in there.

RUMOR.  If this is true Channel Awesome (and to an extent the Nostalgia Critic) are both officially dead. Both these properties cannot survive without Doug Walker.
