Why So Much Sonic Cringe Material?

I have an honest question.  I never cared or got into Sonic games or television shows.  I couldn't care less about the characters other then I know they are SEGA's big money maker.

But my question is this.  Why is there so much Sonic content that is absolutely cringe worthy?  Why is a something as old as Sonic still have such a vocal fan-base?  Where is all this backstory coming from for a very simplistic character?  what makes these characters so attractive to people and how many OC's can be made up for this show?  Why is this STILL so popular?

I truly don't know as I never hear anyone talk about the show or games anymore.  I thought it was irrelevant in today's society, yet I keep seeing cringe-worthy material made for Sonic by fans.  Please... educate me.

I honestly don't know.  I've wondered the same thing.  My guess is the fanbase is youngest?  So they make stuff that makes our older... more mature minds roll their eyes.

I don't understand why Sonic produces so much cringe material.  More then all the others probably... it's been around longer and has had more time to produce such content.  I am just amazed there is still a fandom for it.
