Title: Gaming Soundtracks
Post by: Miggs on 2016-05-08 21:45:06
I dunno if one would put this in the general Video Game topics but uh... I figured to make one of Sound Tracks.

So, what's yalls favorite game sound tracks? Any particular full sound tracks, or just a few songs that you guys like?

Personally I enjoy a lot of the Legend of Zelda songs, mainly form Majora's Mask, along with just a bunch of Nintendo songs in general.

But because I'm a fanboy nerd of the Souls series, this is quickly becoming one of my favorite songs from a game.

Hmm, the Undertale soundtrack in general is amazing. I'm personally a fan of Undyne's battle theme.

The Elder Scrolls games have good soundtracks.  Marrowind especially.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City may have the best sound track of all time.

Descent 1 & 2.  There were both midi and cd-audio OSTs which were awesome in their own ways (the midi versions' awesomeness varied on your soundcard quality, of course).  They've been part of my playlist for ages.

Super Meat Boy has some good tracks in it too, though the 8-bit ones grate on me after a while.

Being an old fart, I remember when arcade games first started appearing in pizza joints and such, and their sounds were largely limited to various bleeps for weapons firing or object collisions.  Pong, Breakout, Space Invaders, those old relics.  And sure, Pac Man had some short tunes between levels, but gameplay was still just sound effects.  So imagine the first time hearing this:

Freakin amazing.  At the time, anyway.

Distant Worlds is great if you like Final Fantay games.
Also a huge fan of the Xenogears soundtrack (and in the same vein, Chrono Trigger, very similar melodies).

The Ace Combat series surprisingly has some impressive background music too.  Especially 4, 5, and 0.

Probably go out on a lamb and say the Zelda soundtracks are great :3 Super Mario series as well, particularly Super Mario Land as well. If I had to pick stuff that I'd listen to for awhile uninterrupted, it'd probably be--

- Metal Gear music
- Castlevania

And Earthbound (Mother 1, 2, 3). :3

I think SMB was Danny's second soundtrack ever.  He did a darned good job, IMO.  And I haven't played it either, just liked the soundtrack.

And so far, I'm not familiar with any of the other soundtracks in this thread, other than what I might've heard from Powerglove or CarboHydroM.

There'll never be a finer western game quite like this. Rockstar is teh best.

Red Dead Redemption.

I will jump onto that wagon.  Truly one of the greatest video games of all time.  Rockstar always puts their full heart and soul into a game, and the soundtrack was unique blending some modern twists with classic country.  It was a fascinating game overall.

Intrada just came out with a new release of this animated Disney movie; the playlist is a year old, but most of the songs are in-tact. :3 Invokes quite a bit of fond memories and quite an adventure.

You could make a topic in the TV thread and link there. Otherwise here it is irrelevant.

Alright. XD

Well, gaming-wise... Space Quest has a nice collection of music that I like. It's a PC game by Sierra Online, made before the company released a lot of junk (and a really bad King's Quest sequel).

^ I like that theme song!  I now the game and listen to it just for the soundtrack.

I like the theme song for Cities Skylines: Mass Transit.  The song is called, "Perceptible Shades 3 (https://player.epidemicsound.com/#/search/?search_query=perceptible+shades+3)."  It is by Johannes Bornlof.  You can listen to it here by clicking play (https://player.epidemicsound.com/#/search/?search_query=perceptible+shades+3).

All three of those last soundtracks were pretty good.  I like the power in the TransOcean theme though.  Really made me think I was on the Seven Sea's with some cargo.  Lol.

The Cities Skylines is traffic.  It builds up very nicely, sort of reminds me of a song in movie Spirit: Stallion of the Baconator.

Can't tell me this song doesn't bring your mood to enlightened levels of happy! It invokes so much joy and merriment, and just care free fun.  If you liked this, you would enjoy the numerous songs in the soundtrack of Planet Coaster.  Here is the theme song below.  They have two soundtracks, one of music used in titles and build modes, etc, and another for all the rides that you can use.

They have one of those cool soundtracks that uses elements of the theme song throughout the entire album.  It's really cool when it pops up.

Music of Planet Coast Soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ik4SeVpOh0w&list=PLWGb27faVkpNlZQ2Ey63GNvAWtgjp-1CL)

Planet Coaster Rides Soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFRoamGbyns&list=PL8nUIyiljzdi6bSFOdMa9e0dHUikxIUZ4)

And some other standout songs.

And if you like Disney theme music, this song below will make you feel right at home!

This was stuck in my head last couple days. The NES version of PC/C64 game 'Maniac Mansion' had the unique gameplay option of every character having their own CD player with music; the rockers got rock music, the journalist/photographer got jazzy and classical, and so on.

Fun stuff, good times.

This is a lesser-known game but if you guys have ever played any of the Asphalt games on IOS or Andriod the soundtrack is surprisingly spectacular, especially for the newest and current Asphalt 8 Airborne. The music is not specifically for video games, and is more alternate-rock in genre, but if you play the game or just listen to the songs imagineing yourself racing through a track at 200 mph in a super-expensive sports car, actually burning rubber and hitting jumps and using Nitros, the music fits the moment perfectly :)

Asphalt 8 Airborn OST entire playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDTr6hNzQoye3_AXrLMYLRQJuSDzXqdVb

Personal favorites of mine include Underdog by Kasabin, Alseep at the Wheel by Band of Skulls, Blood Pressure by Mutemath, Ares -Villans Remix by Bloc Party and Pulsar by Celldweller. ^^

I didn't look, but if Minecraft isn't listed then you are all nuts. ;)

No game brought me to a time and space so unique as Minecraft has.  A game so simply, yet so complicatedly simple.  You could make your imagination come true, and the few times the music would pop in, it always seemed to be as you climbed a peak to stunning vistas or were exploring some caverns or even in the forest.  Much love to that game and the soundtrack makers.

In terms of a sort of more "medieval fantasy" sort of style, I don't know if it'd fit entirely, but Zelda games typically have a good sounding soundtrack with that sort of theme. I recently picked up Majora's Mask again and I remembered how great the soundtrack for that game was. The Song of Healing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDX4ZwUeOok) in particular was something I forgot how much I loved.

Since people are talking about medieval and open world games too, I am wondering if that new game, "Kingdom Come: Deliverance", if it has a good soundtrack?  I haven't heard anything as it just came out. I don't own it either.

Old Zelda games have a good soundtrack depending on who you ask, yes.

Kan Gao does does a spectacular re-occuring music theme in his game, "Finding Paradise."

The song a full listen.  He uses certain notes throughout the soundtrack and it really accomplishes a wonderful piece in music that evokes introspective thought and memories of times from the past.

A theme song that got anyone ready to race was the game THE CREW.  Sadly the game didn't live up to the potential it had.  It was a good game in many ways, but also not that great in several as well.  It always left me feeling a bit empty.  But the massive whole United States world you could drive from LA to NYC, Seattle to Miami, was pretty stinking awesome.

The theme song as well as atmospheric music used in the game was really good.  The Theme song seemed to promote this awesome game, but when you get into it, the tone just doesn't fit this rocking' theme.  The theme has urgency and weight to it, but the game has neither.

Ok, this might sound weird... but hear me out.
There is this... interesting pokémon ROM hack: Pokémon Clover.
It was made by group of 4chan "natives"... and it's a celebration of everything that 4chan represent.
This means memes... a lot of memes.
While being a giant meme game, it's actually really well made.

It also has an completely original soundtrack.
Most of the songs are meme songs, but some are 100% original... and they're actually pretty good!

Those guys on 4chan know how to make some good music. But of course, behind those anonymous name tags, is of course a person. With talents. And shit. So naturally you're bound to find a dude that knows how to make bumpin' music.

Idk why I'm saying bumpin'

I came back to this thread to leave this here, but I totally forgot that I forgot what the hell I was gonna say about those tracks up there, so I left a message up there first cuz I remembered what I was gonna say.

Alright anyways. Y'all hear me talk about the souls series all the fuckin' time. It's my favorite series, blah blah blah.
But fuckin. It really hits me in the gut. Like, hardcore hits me in the gut knowing that the first song you hear in the entire series is called "Prologue".
First song in the entire series, starting from the first game.

And then fuckin, the last song you'll hear in the series is called "Epilogue", from the third and last game in the series.

And it ffffffffucking hits me hard because of my attatchment with this series and shit. Like, I finished High School to this series. Up til' my senior year. I played the first game Sophomore year (maybe Freshman), played the second game more or less the same year, and then the last game just a few months before I finished High School.

And it's like. It hits harder, literally just because it's called "Epilogue". Cementing the ending of the series. Like SHIT. DAMN. It's DONE. BOOM. It's OVER.

Like, yeah, duh, Miguel why the fuck're you talkin' about a series that ended like 3 fukin years ago as if it's a new thing?
Cuuuz fuckin, it JUST hit me like a few weeks or so ago that the series is over. Like. OVER. So I'm like "Aw shit. That sucks."

K I'm done, just felt like throwing this out here.

So does it make a diff to people when some companies use licensed music while others make their own original music?  Like original scores.

So does it matter?  Because we can list Vice City for having an amazing soundtrack with their true licensed music, while we can also say that Medal of Honor has a great soundtrack that is fully original in its score.  So does this make a difference to people?  Licensed vs original?
Title: Re: Gaming Soundtracks
Post by: Miggs on 2019-07-14 13:30:13
I don't think it makes much a difference. Licensed music can give as much of an atmosphere and mood portrayal than an original ost. An example aside from most open world games, would be Killing Floor 2. It has some original stuff in there in between waves (sometimes during the waves), but a lot of the OST consists of a few metal bands to give that adrenaline rush for Zed killing.
Title: Re: Gaming Soundtracks
Post by: Rainberry on 2019-07-14 16:53:08
I will give slightly higher credence to original's scores and soundtracks, but there is no denying when using licensed music properly, it can create an atmosphere like no other.  So I think they are both allowed in this topic.

Idk if it is really over, the Dark Souls brand now sells way too much to just end it there like this...

I'll tell you what, maybe it's better if they don't continue the series anymore.
Much better than what happened to most of my favorite series from my highschool days.

Halo, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed...
God, what have they done...

At least FromSoftware keeps making games with the same style and "spirit" of the Dark Souls games.
It might not be the same thing, but it's better than seeing your favorite series becoming a smelly rotten corpse.

V4-11 Hall-A is fucking great. I should get back to playing it, it's super chill.

No yeah, I'm OK with it being over in the sense that it's better to not keep going on and on. And honestly, it ended perfectly with a battle between the last two people alive.
The Ringed City DLC is great.

I was about to post Minecraft and did a quick search.  I fully agree. Minecraft's soundtrack is a gem.  You never know what song will start playing and they are all crafted and memorable. It has pretty amazing orchestral battle themes to perfectly capture the feel of hunting epic giant monsters!

I don't think this has been mentioned... but the Sims game franchise has a very chill soundtrack.

One of my personal all time favorites is from a rare and very under-appreciated title from the Playstation One era called Einhander.  I believe it's the only sidescrolling shooter that Square ever made and if you ever get a chance to play it, it's a great game but be warned it's expensive if you can find an original working disc.  The soundtrack is a masterpiece of electronic composition, if you're into the whole techno scene.  It was composed by Kenichiro Fukui, and I love it for its atmospheric ambiance.

My other favorites are some of the Tomb Raids soundtracks.  I do like the ones from the original first 3 games but my favorite one out of all of them is for Tomb Raider Underworld.  Definitely one of Colin O'Maley's best!

You know has a lovingly crafted soundtrack?  Far Cry 5.  Especially the country and folk instrumentals and the church choir.  There is some terrific stuff in here by Dan Romer.  It is a comforting soundtrack, but chilling with just an edge of uneasiness.

All great.  The attention and car in the FC5 soundtrack is apparent and it's great.

So the popular thing right now is to hate on the game Balan Wonderworld and there are many reasons too, but one is NOT the truly stunning soundtrack.  It varies from Disney theatrical wonder, to jungle themes, showtunes, and some of the catchiest stuff you will hear out there.  Even more impressive is how they have a distinctive theme song that is used throughout in notes and motifs for a truly well rounded musical experience.  It gives the overall game a feeling of a theater show and there was no shortage of love and effort put into this truly spectacular soundtrack.

I have mentioned an Akagi carrier in my latest post, and... realized I can’t see this ship without one of main menu tracks from IL-2 Sturmovik instantly starting playing in my head.
This music plays when you choose the Japanese side and I think it stands out the most.

Soviet, German and US tracks sound much more like a background music.

I love it when games have music representative of their factions or countries. WWII games have been excellent at this though the years.
