Fair enough... though taken out of context it just seems weird.  Mustn't forget to give a shout out to the original poster, Umeko --who may or may not even be around anymore, but, still, give 'em a look anyhow.    :D

Taking it in strides!  I like that @NostradamusTheSeer.  As for Umeko... she seems to be long gone.  Haven't seen her in ages.

@Darrin why you got to be a Mr. Grumpy Pants?

Congrats!  I've been a fine deviAnt for a decade myself, and just uploaded my 400th deviAtion.  My style overall hasn't changed much-- I still prefer hand-drawn ink-and-pencil sketches to that done with fancy computer pens and tablets-- though I do dabble in photographs from time to time.

Congrats on 400.  So that is a legit school, or was? That is pretty interesting.  We got nothing like that around here.  Kind of crazy to see old stuff like that still being displayed.  It looks like it's well kept up and clean too.  It's a memory of how things used to be there and how someone cared enough to create a school to help out a group in need.

Yes, I like to see that the town I'm living in still respects its past, even if it isn't always pretty. It's refreshing, in this tumultuous day and age, to see such a thing as historical perspective.

One former alumnus wrote a book about her experiences at the old Negro School back in the fifties, against the background of racial segregation and the pivotal Brown v. Board decision. You can check it out here.

@Darrin and @anyponedrawn , thanks! It's a rainbow chrysanthemum. Kiku is Japanese for "chrysanthemum", and I just love rainbows.  ^-^

Very lovely indeed!  Rainbows are pretty cool when you see them in the wild too!

It more or less surprises me you don't have people (especially people who don't live in your town) complain they still use terminology like that on a sign, even though it was a commonly used term back in the day.  It's like people who complain about renaming a school named after George Washington.... and how every single historical figure is now deemed some sort of "ism" by the radical left.   They got rid of Columbus, they got rid of George Washington Day, Presidents Day in general... they are even going after Abraham Lincoln, the man who fought AGAINST slavery, in saying he didn't do enough... Wow.

Well, we aren't as in your face about our history as some towns. This find was dumb luck on my part-- I stumbled across it, sort of tucked away on a quiet, unassuming side street, and we don't exactly advertise it's there, either. As much as I disagree with selling/renaming a park bearing his name and the removal of his statue from it, I must concede naming a place after a guy with such an...interesting reputation--in a heavily African-American city, no less--is fairly asking for a swift drubbing.    :-]   Also, it's rather ironic that one of the streets it's on is crossed by "Lee". But we also have a Grant Street, so, yay, equal time.    :')

My dear Raine,  I refuse to believe you have nothing of historical interest where you live.  I mean, maybe you don't come from in a town with... well, let's just say such a rich racial past as mine, sure, but you don't  exactly live in a void, either. Do a simple Google Map search of landmarks about your city, or talk to the older members of your community about its history. That's why I like life in a small town so much; while there's not as much history as in your bigger cities like, say, New York or Boston, it's not as spread out, either. Literally, just walk a mile or two from your own doorstep and you're liable to stumble across some. Cemeteries are another one of my favorite places to explore; some of those stones can go back for decades, and you'll find at least one name you recognize from a local street or on a storefront, if it's old enough. Believe it or not, there's even a lion buried in our local park-- during the course of my research, I found out there used to be a zoo on that spot, back in the sixties. With ample apologies to Tex Avery, I present a little story I wrote about it.

Thank you @kiku.  I didn't know that.  I've always wondered what your name meant.  ^b-
