Title: City Simulation Games Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2023-06-19 12:26:44
City Simulation Games Discussion

Welcome.  We are builders, planners, and fans of city simulation games.  From the very first Sim City, to Sim City 4, Cities XXL, to Cities:Skylines, we play them all.  This topic is for all city-building games from current day builders, to medieval city builders, and more.  Happy building.

This new topic has spawned from the Simulation Games Topic, which has already had a lot of discussion on Cities:Skylines II. Today, Paradox Interactive revealed their first development diary for the new game, coming out October 24, 2023.  The trailer and dev dairy video below as well as written blog (https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/developer-diary/development-diary-1-road-tools.1590300/) which has more information.

^ The return of traffic accidents!  Just like in Sim City 4!!  Also parking lots, finally a game that makes use of the mechanic!  It looks really promising.

Next update.  A lot of good stuff in this one.  Though it seems like ferries are no longer in the base game.

This is a great update as well. DRAWABLE FARMS!!! Mixed use development.  So many residential zoning types.  Commercial zoning overhaul.  All this is great.  Dev blog goes more into detail.  Here (https://www.paradoxinteractive.com/games/cities-skylines-ii/features/zones-signature-buildings)

I always wanted to try that game, but you can't buy it on Steam.

A beautifully detailed blog about City Services. This game is so detail oriented and I love that.  We can create regions, counties with multiple cities, and more.

The depth is great.  I really cannot wait to do this.  I love the upgradeable services and buildings. I never liked how we had to place the same style building everywhere to fill the need of a city without mods.

Power and Electricity is tomorrow in the video and blog post.  Not super excited about this as it seems fairly understandable, but seeing the new upgrades, which kind of new features such as the water table, might be interesting.

Map textures and world textures seem so lax in this game.  City building detail is great, but world detail is left wanting.

Longtime city builder player!

Did you guys check the recent seasons and climate blog post too?  It will be neat to see how that effects gameplay. More replayability.

They touched on homeless populations too.  I wonder if they will create tents of shantytowns?  I doubt it, but still interesting.

^ Highly doubt it.  They just wander.  But it should increase crime too.

The people simulation looks very detailed, but I think it will be overlooked completely by just building cities.

There are way more pluses to this game than negatives.  It's mostly all positives, but some textures look really poor.

New city game I hadn't heard about, but a bit of a twist.  It focuses more on production of supply chains.

Highrise City just got out of early access.

The last update before the game release in October.

Cities Skylines II has released and is getting torched because the game cannot run on ANYTHING.  You get like 5fps.  Optimization is horrible and with that, Colossal Order has destroyed the good will with their fanbase instantly.  They need to fix it.  They have to rebuild that trust and all the Youtubers who promoted it, are in shock or paid off right now.  It's a shame.  Mostly negative reviews so far on Steam. The foundation is there, optimization and more care needs to be done.

Just another example of a new game imploding upon release.  Fans are mad.

It's disappointing but in the long run it has the bones of something great.  It's just most will NOT be able to play it.  A new generation of PC gaming is happening and we are finding out most need to update or buy a new computer.

Reviews are quickly bumping up.  Now in Mixed territory.

Most complaints were optimization and people couldn't play the game because their computer's were not good enough.

I was super excited for this game, but I cannot play it.  So I guess I will have to wait a few years. :-\

CS:2 is doing really well right now.  They've been updated and fixing things.  Still don't own it yet, but I have been following the news.

Reviews are still mixed on Steam.

CS:II's player count has dropped significantly.  It is about even with the CS:I player count now.  I predict it will drop below.

It's unfortunate, but it wasn't ready for prime time and most can't play it on their computers.

I'm still devastated by how Cities Skylines II has imploded on itself. :(  The old game now has more players than the new one.

It is very upsetting what happened and how it could be years for it to even be a fraction of what CS1 was.  I think they will eventually give up and I fear the parent company will call it a loss and no longer invest in city builders.  Heck, they might even have to make new DLC for CS1 to make some money.

I wonder what his will mean for Colossal Order going forward?  I mean, I think the game sold well initially... so maybe they made money?

I'm not sure.  Right now the internet is doom and gloom, but I wouldn't listen to them until we get official word from reputable news sources or from the company directly.  If we start seeing layoffs, then worry.

Pretty much this.  Let's not fall into the anti-hype when we really don't know the full story yet.
