Title: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: Nosebro on 2016-05-14 11:30:00
What did everybody think of season 3 so far? I thought it was amazing!

Wait, we already have a SU discussion.

But I thought it was really good. It would have been better if someone hadn't sent me major spoilers.
It was really great though. I'm afraid of going on Tumblr though because you know tons of people are going to take this one line the wrong way: "I love you, Peridot!" God, it's genuinely a very heart warming line, but you just know there's gonna be sick freaks f'ing it up and making a bunch of porn of it.

But um, perhaps let's talk about this episode with as few spoilers as possible, in case someone hasn't seen it yet.

I'll avoid spoilers as much as I can.
I also really enjoyed Steven telling peri that he loved her. Super cute.

It was ;w;
I love how Peri says she wants to help because she cares about the Crystal Gems and those other things, but less. Haha, Peridot had a lot of funny lines.

Well, best you watch the episode I suppose. Can't really give away without spoilering.
I'll try though, she was freaking out but not because of what Steven said.

Spoiler away guys.  We do it all the time in MLP topics.  You have to figure people who click these topics will expect spoilers and they are hear to talk about the episode everyone watched. :)
Title: Re: Steven universe S3E1&2
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-05-14 15:26:08
Yep, suppose we're gonna have to do for SU what we do for the MLP episodes. Make a new one for each episode? Or does that seem excessive? They are only 15 minute episodes. It will cause a lot of topics to pop up. I think, perhaps we make this the S3 discussion for SU.

I thought it was nice.
Didn't quite appreciate the ripping on New Jersey >_> gosh, why everybody be hatin' on the Joise. I do find ripping amusing, but at times I'm like, seriously? Commenting about smog when they're flying in from New York. But eh whatever, it made me chuckle a little.

I liked the ending, Peridot has just been amazing this Season. "My home away from Homeworld". Also, we get to see how much taller Lapis is to Peridot. Peridot comes to her hips it seems. Looks like all the fanart of them being the same size now is kinda retconned haha.

Overall I think it was a sweet episode, and had a lot of nice sentiment to it. It was rather slow, but I enjoyed it :)

So this is that episode about the Steven-shaped watermelons I heard was slated for this season....? I figured that would be a lighter "breather" episode, but apparently the Steven melons have a part to play in defending Earth from alien takeover.

Then go watch Darrin! Have you not watched the whole show?
The watermelons Steven plants come out looking like him and they're sentient beings. And they protect Steven, but he sends them away to live on their own basically. Then they reappear in the first episode of S3

The Stephen Melons, now living on Mask Island, appear to have become sort of bizarre Gem-worshiping island cult offering live sacrifices to Malachite.  Stephen inspired them to fight back against the big bully, though (as I am just about to watch part two) it seems their little civilization may not survive the coming of the Cluster.

I'm like episode 2 of the new episodes. Who else thought Pearl's song and precarious situation was a metaphor for contemplating suicide?
Title: Re: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: NostradamusTheSeer on 2016-07-29 18:02:40
Actually, I thought it was a metaphor for secretly wanting her best friend's husband. I mean, homoerotic subtext aside, she and Rose were like sisters, and a sister doesn't do that.
Title: Re: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-07-29 19:14:27
I thought it was made pretty obvious by her song that she loved Rose in that way.
And she's just depressed that in the end she chose him over her.

It's just as cringeworthy as the people who ship Mayor Dewey with Pearl.
Title: Re: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: NostradamusTheSeer on 2016-07-29 21:36:45
I guess love is complicated, be you human or Gem.   Pearl is the most maternal of Steven's "aunts", so it stands to reason fans want her to find love with someone.
Title: Re: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2016-07-29 21:49:40
I thought it was a really well done song.

I viewed it as Pearl feeling that Rose choose him, and didn't choose her, but in terms of maybe fighting for Gems or something, like their fusion thing... I don't know.  So like either she loved Rose, or she is upset she choose him because of them not focusing on fusion and doing their thing.  I can see it both ways though.
Title: Re: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-07-29 21:55:46
?
I felt it was like the final thing that cemented that they loved each other and what broke Pearl was Rose choosing someone, who in Pearls eyes, was somebody who barely knew her over her [Pearl] who she had fought with and loved for years. Which I guess is something pretty heartbreaking.

It does seem that because of Greg though that Rose spent less time with all of the gems and the whole Crystal Gems thing. Which probably hurt them too, but they weren't as close to Rose as Pearl was.
Title: Re: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: Anyponedrawn on 2016-07-29 21:59:36
Yeah, it cements Pearl loved Rose.

In their world, they are neither male or female, right?  So now that they are on earth in the form of females, they can make this huge message with this show.  It might make a lot of people unhappy, and a lot of other people happy.
Title: Re: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-07-29 22:01:37
Well yeah, it's a message they seem to have been doing since the start. Afterall, Ruby and Saphire and constantly fused, literally attached to each other all the time. And it does make many people happy, and the people it makes unhappy, they just seem to brush it away with "well they're not really females".

This show is really trying to make a statement though.  It went a step further then the Legend of Korra.

I mean, think of the subject matter, on a children's network, that is being shown.  This would be complete taboo even a few years ago.  One can view this as progress, or a complete decline in our values system.

I'm not choosing a side, just pointing stuff out that is already known, but I don't see people ever talk about it.  I loved Pearl's song, I liked her outfit, and it was well animated. :)  I thought it was really good.
Title: Re: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-07-29 22:12:21
Well, I guess people don't talk about it because it's just expected of the show now.
It's been there since the premise, or at least since Giant Woman and the episode with Sugilite. A deep connection made between female characters. It's not anything "new" now for the show. It's one of its key elements.

Step further than Korra... Hmm. Well, in LoK the characters are confirmed bisexuals and it ends with two of the characters becoming a couple. Here, they're "lesbians", or bi in Rose's case. They both have strong powerful females who are in relationships with another female. I guess the difference is, LoK did it because it was off TV and was independent when the last episode was released.

Yeah, you are right about LoK.  So I guess we should be viewing this as groundbreaking, what Steven Universe is doing, ON TV.

I'm still amazed that works.  CN is allowing it, knowing full well most kids don't realize that, and most adults who will walk in, won't know that.  They'll just see two females going at it (not going at it, but you know what I mean).
Title: Re: Steven Universe - Season 3
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-07-29 22:27:17
Well that's extreme. A child, and someone with no context would just see 2 gems dancing.
It's like saying when the transformers make their giant robot (do transformers do that?) it's them having sex. Sure, fusing is a lot more intimate and about the relationship between the dancers, but it doesn't solely have to be about a love relationship. But one where they need to work together.

Of course, older people who watch the show see the subtext, but young kids won't, and I guess it's iffy if someone with no context walked in on it.

But you brought up a valid point with Transformers. They do become like a MEGA-TRANSFORMER... thing.... ;)

I know parents who have banned this show from their kids.  Parents don't know the sub context, but Rebecca Sugar certainly had an agenda too.  That goes without saying.

Eeeeh, Cthulhu always swims left.  I think the idea that non-traditional romantic attraction represents a "decline in values" is drawing very close to the edge of today's Overton window.

Though I'm sure the mono/null-gender thing helped them get the show across the line a little earlier than it would have otherwise.

I particularly like that the show takes these things and just plays them completely matter-of-fact.  Attention is not specifically brought to them, no one dwells on how anything differs from traditional post-classical norms, it's just how things are.  Or at least that's how it was established in S1, looking through Steven's eyes, who'd never known anything else.  Now that Homeworld gems are in the picture, they are making the distinctions more explicit.  Which is fine, but I really liked it when these things were treated as unremarkable.

It is starting to become a pretty major focus in the show.  I will give them credit for their world and character building.  That has been really good for a short 22 minute show.

11 mins per ep, so it fits a 15min TV slot with ads etc (or 2 to a 30 min slot).

A lot of the family relationships we see in the show are very nontraditional. For example, Greg's pal Marty knocks up Vidalia and then abandons her to raise the kid alone as a single mom. We later see Sour Cream still has some issues with his stepdad Yellowtail.  Lapis and Jasper have a clearly abusive relationship, and she rejects her every overture to rekindle it-- right down to the classic phrases "I can change" and what we had was not healthy". Jasper even tries to blame Lapis for all their problems-- although physically imposing, the larger Gem seems very weak-willed, and Lapis the stronger-minded of the two. The families of the Beach City boardwalk businesses went to war with each other over French fries, which is both comical and horrifying.

Some goes to the point where they try to make non traditional the traditional and don't even question it.  They try to make a new norm, and it becomes forced.

Phineas and Ferb did a good job with divorced parents, blended families, and interfaith marriages... Clarence has a woman and her special-needs son cohabitating with a man... it can be done, and done well.

Actually, I'm surprised, with their shared love of music, Greg and Sour Cream don't hang out a bit more... bond over some old-school guitar licks and stories about the old days.  Although Vidalia might not want her son hearing seamy stories about what Marty used to get up to with the groupies.  Who knows, S.C. might have a few half-siblings out there somewhere.

I think SC and Greg don't hang out is that Greg likes playing music while SC likes to DJ and create beats.
Greg makes songs.

I do like how SU shows non traditional families, and even the traditional ones seem to have "missing pieces" for lack of better term. Like Kofi's family. We don't see his wife, only his mom and his two daughters. For the longest time I actually thought KiKi was Jenny's mom, until it was stated they were sisters.

I really like Vidalia, even being a mother didn't stop her from being sarcastic and snarky, but you do see she had to grow up and get a job and become *gasp* responsible, are you listening this generation? She got a job to be able to support her son. Vidalia is a good mom. Time really did a number on her though.
