A topic for past, present, and future Sony Pictures Animation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Pictures_Animation) films.

They are known for films such as Open Season, Cloud With a change of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania, The Angry Birds Movie (even though they didn't animate it), and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

They have a lot coming up ahead.  They didn't do the first Angry Birds movie, but that movie was actually pretty good.  So I hope they can mimic the style Rovio did in the first film and keep it's charm.

I can't believe they are making another Peter Rabbit movie.  No one asked for that.

I like how Sony Animation has such a 2D cartoony movement in much of their work.  They are more zany and fun with their characters.  They've also shown the most improvement in terms of visuals in their films.  So I do hope they have success after such duds as the Emoji Movie and Peter Rabbit.

Nope.

But surprisingly, I will say the first Angry Birds movie was actually pretty good.  It isn't a classic, but it is very humorous and weird.

Apearently it's soppesed to be great with a 76 critic score and a 85 audience score it might be the best movie based on a video game ever

Websites like Metacritic are dangerous to believe in.  But they can be decent metrics... I'm glad from the sounds of it, the film was good.  They have have surprised us with both movies with the most unlikely source!

Rovio is smart.  They are keeping their Angry Birds relevant and they are not making these movies be purely related to their games.  Instead they let the developers make a good movie.

I can say that Angry Birds 2 is BETTER than the first Angry Birds.  I saw it with some young family members and I was laughing and enjoying it.  They took what was good from the first move and made it better!  I really enjoyed it and they allowed for characters to develop! There is also some slower moments, but pacing is well done.  I liked the first move a good amount, but this improves on it.

I think Rovio has allowed Angry Birds to become a full series now.  They can continue to make movies or a tv series that has no relation to their games... and it's good!  Sony Animation did a good job here.

Looking for a good place to post a shot of a Spider-Man comic sneeze I found.

Sadly they are giving us "Peter Rabbit 2."

I'm still waiting for the long-rumored Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs III.  It's supposed to take the franchise into space with a whole food planet.  It seems, though, Sony/Dreamworks is putting all its eggs in the prequel basket, what with shows based on both CWaC and Hotel Transylvania in production.  Speaking of, anyone else heard talk of a them doing a HT 4?

Well there is the book the series is based off of.  Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 3: Planet of the Pies (https://www.amazon.com/Cloudy-Chance-Meatballs-Planet-Pies/dp/1442490276).

Sony Animation also did an animated series for Cartoon Network (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloudy_with_a_Chance_of_Meatballs_(TV_series)) which wasn't awful, but CN didn't care about it all and it was in a bad time slot and already forgotten less than a year in.  They also tried to pitch it to Canada's Teletoon who is known for equally crappy cartoons, but they canned it and another crummy cartoon channel, YTV took it before also canning it.  Strangely in just 2 seasons, they were able to make 104 episodes no one wanted.

As I said the cartoon wasn't bad.  But the networks didn't want it at all.  The series did some further depth with the characters including clarifying that Flint and Sam had known each others before the first movie.

On February 2, 2018, DHX Media announced the series has been picked up for a second season. On November 30, 2018, the show was made available for streaming on Netflix in the United States.  Strangely while the show wasn't a success in the US, Turner Broadcasting ordered that second season for it's Cartoon Network channels in other world markets such as Europe, South America, and Asia... where is must have been good enough to warrant more.  And even though it wasn't successful in Canada, it has received eight Canadian Screen Award nominations... which shows to you how low their standards are.

More recently, CBS All Access bought the rights to start airing the show again in the US.

As for a new Cloudy Meatballs movie... no word.  Which is odd.  The movie was a financial success each time.

As for Hotel Trans 4, it is happening and has a slated release of 2021 (https://entertainment.inquirer.net/320419/p2fb-hotel-transylvania-4-set-for-2021).  Sadly, Genndy Tartakovsky confirms he won’t be in the director’s chair (https://collider.com/hotel-transylvania-4-director-genndy-tartakovsky/) for that movie.

I liked how it looked and it looks good.... well it looked good until they added the killer robots.  That killed it for me.  Otherwise it looked endearing about a father trying to win his daughter back on a journey.  Yeaaaah, the robots killed it unfortunately.

New film: Connected.

I like the road trip idea... but not the save the world aspect that seems tacked on.  Seems studios feel like they always have to make things go over the top when they make a movie.  I don't know why? :(
Title: Re: Sony Pictures Animation Discussion
Post by: Blurr on 2020-03-06 16:56:58
I'll give the trailer this. It wasn't what I expected at all. It looks like at first that it's gonna be a cheesy family roadtrip film like Goofy Movie or RV, but then they throw in a machine uprising. That got me laughing so I'm gonna give it a chance. These are the same guys behind Spiderverse so for now, I intend to give it at least one theater watch.
Title: Re: Sony Pictures Animation Discussion

Goofy Movie

First of all.... GOOFY MOVIE IS THE BEST MOVIE IN THE WORLD.  EVER.  PERIOD.  FACT.

but then they throw in a machine uprising. That got me laughing so I'm gonna give it a chance.

Second... it's not surprising though.  By trying to be "crazy and wild" it instead becomes expected.  We all expected it wouldn't just be a slice of life movie.  It has me disappointed over the robots.  Make that a different movie.  Please just make a slice of life, true to life, family movie for once!  Surprise us by being heartwarming and down to earth for once Hollyweird!

IDK, I kinda like the setting of a family saving the world and everyone else from a robot apocalypse.

Also fun fact: Connected was originally going to be called The Mitchells Vs The Machines before getting retitled.

Yeah, it's a pretty common critique among animation enthusiasts.  We always complain about how similar all play-dough 3D model characters are.  They all look very similar with just a few changes here and there.  Pixar doesn't have the design edge they once had, but they still have the detail and effects edge.

Do you guys think the daughter from Connected who is named Katie might end up becoming the next trending fan art character online by the end of 2020 once the movie itself comes out?

No I do not.   Very rarely are film characters trending fan art.  It's usually cartoon series.  Also the 3D character model to 2D art style is usually not that great.  I don't think this movie will be much more than a mediocre splash in the pool.  It won't be much of a film. This year as a whole has been a disaster for the film industry.

Cinderella Remake Put On Hold, Film To Have Many Controversial Politically Correct Changes...

The classic fairy tale Cinderella is getting a remake, this time with a "genderless" Fairy Godmother.

Actor and singer Billy Porter, who is noted for his “gender fluidity,” announced he and singer Camila Cabello would star in the upcoming remake of Cinderella. The production will feature Porter as the Fairy Godmother, and the characterization will be "genderless" because “magic has no gender.”

“We are presenting this character as genderless — at least that’s how I’m playing it. And it’s really powerful,” Porter said.

The remake is intended for “a new generation” and will emphasize to viewers that the story is about empowerment, not the need to find a man.

“It’s not about women needing a man for validation,” the actor told Insider. “It’s about women empowering themselves, and that’s a really great message to be sending out into the world.”

Porter is best known for his role in the show Pose, a show about gay black and Latino Americans in the 1980s ballroom scene.

“Who I am and what I represent is very specific and really shows that this moment is about inclusivity and moving the needle towards self-acceptance and humanity and self-care and all those things,” he said.

The musical comedy is slated for a February 2021 release, however, production is currently put on hold due to COVID-19 concerns, reports The Hollywood Reporter. It will also star Pierce Brosnan and Idina Menzel.

I really hope black Knight from gendy and spider verse 2 are Pg-13 via this article: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://deadline.com/2020/06/sony-pictures-animation-kristine-belson-covid-19-r-rated-movies-1202969612/amp/&ved=0ahUKEwiu7feLsr3qAhUt4YUKHTrEACEQyM8BCCcwAA&usg=AOvVaw1ol5zTZNGITzGVwopIVKh7&ampcf=1

So whatever happened to "Connected" which was supposed to release September 18, 2020?

Well it was pushed to Oct 23, 2020... and then it was pulled from release entirely.  It is currently unknown when it will be released, with Sony last saying it is in limbo for release, but it might still see a 2020 release.

There has been a lot of backlash from people saying they liked the family roadtrip and family life aspect of the film, but a lot disliking the distasteful "robot take over the world" stuff.  From trailers, it looks like there will be a message about technology and how generations adapt to it.

Well Connected has just about already finished it's production. So due to that, the movie will still come out, but it has been said that they will wait for a release date for the movie once the theaters are in control during their reopening season.

Connected will now come to Netflix later this year and it reverted back to it’s original title, The Mitchells vs. The Machines.

That isn't good.  Looks like this film had a lot of issues in development.  They didn't think it would be good enough for a full theatrical release either... and to have the title changed AGAIN.... yeah, not good.  "Sony sold the distribution rights to Netflix in January 2021, upon which the film was renamed back to The Mitchells vs. the Machines."

I feel bad for all the people who worked on the film to only have it be tossed around so much then be sold out to a lowly streaming service.

Maybe there's another project in the works with the title "Connected" and they're afraid of confusion?  That can happen, esp. with the wide availability of streaming services.  For the sake of your impressionable children, don't put on the program Cake (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cake_(2019_TV_series)) thinking it's that other show Cake (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/Cake).  "Mama, what it that man doing to that shark?"  (loud anguished scream from parent)

So it changed because of another project called "Connected."  But it still is sad to see this film be dragged through the mud and be given the kiss of death for Sony.  They obviously didn't care about it after what had been going on and figured they could make some money by simply selling it instead of promoting it at theaters.  That is very sad for all the people who worked on it.

It's like a parent no longer caring about their kid's art and telling them to just leave or something.  Sad.

Two new films being worked on by Sony Animation are.... Vivo (which the logo reminds me a lot of Coco) and Hotel Transylvania 4.  Both have a scheduled release for 2021.  Another s "Wish Dragon."

Sony is projecting to have a busy year of films in 2021.  But it is likely they will be pushed around and de-platformed again.  Lets hope not.

Adam Sandler and Kevin James aren't reprising their roles as Drac and Frank, respectively.  Not a  good sign.  Didn't James get mixed up in that #MeToo mess and is now forced to hide out in Italy, making films?  Or am I thinking of another actor?  Well, if it isn't sexual harassment charges that tank his career, it'll be doing that stinker Becky (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Becky_(2020_film)).  Phew.    ;D

I am looking at future films for the studio and they have no theatrical releases planned for quite awhile.  Everything they will be releasing now are releases to STREAMING, so lower quality content.

I wonder if something is happening with the studio?  Why the drop off from theater releases?
Title: Sony Goes Rated R and 2D
Post by: Silverwing on 2022-07-24 21:31:35
FIXED WILL BE RATED R AND 2D ANIMATED

Sony is going to shake things up.  Their next film is going to be a 2D animated movie and it will be an R RATED movie.  It will be written by Genndy Tartakovsky. Article (https://geektyrant.com/news/genndy-tartakovskys-r-rated-animated-film-fixed-follows-the-101-dalmatians-rules-but-its-got-swearing)

Samurai Jack and Primal creator Genndy Tartakovsky is currently developing an R-rated raunchy animated comedy titled Fixed. The film is about “a dog who finds out he's gonna get neutered in the morning, and what does he do with his next 24 hours?”

This is a film that Tartakovsky has been trying to get this movie made over the past 12 years. He says that “It's gonna look really good, and it's got heart, but then it's got the super raunch. I've never really seen anything like it.”

During a recent interview with IndieWire, the filmmaker offered a bit more insight on the film, saying he’s following the “101 Dalmatians rules, but it's got swearing and these R-rated things." He explained:

"The animation gods blessed me with the premise ... In its own self, it's a unicorn, this project. It's got raunchy comedy, we're doing all the layouts here so it's very hand-crafted. It's got heart, it's got real character humor and not filled with one liners. And the dogs act like canines and not humans ... t's like we're following the 'One Hundred and One Dalmatians' rules, but it's got swearing and these R-rated things."

Tartakovsky has been talking a lot about this project recently and he’s obviously very excited and passionate about it. He’s such a talented storyteller and I can’t wait to see what he delivers with Fixed!

Sony is going to shake things up.  Their next film... Fixed  is about “a dog who finds out he's gonna get neutered in the morning, and what does he do with his next 24 hours?

Sounds like a restful change from the irritatingly "woke" direction currently being taken by companies like Disney.  I've had some pretty intense discussions online about spaying/neutering. I'm really not in favor of the practice, and I've written as much (https://sta.sh/2wkoh3sgw5n?edit=1) in the past. Just casually saying you're not really on board with getting your pets fixed, I've found, is as unpopular as announcing you're pro-life.  I find many progressive pinheads are as adamant (and ignorant) about neutering as a means of animal population control as they are about abortion rights for women. Debates can get pretty nasty on both sides with each camp trying to tear the other apart. So, yes, I'm looking forward to this movie, even if it isn't exactly how I would approach it.

Title: Side Characters in The Mitchells vs. The Machines
Post by: DEEcat98 on 2023-02-16 13:27:16
The SPA movie, The Mitchells vs. The Machines had side characters who are the Poseys (the Mitchells' neighbors) and Katie's friends from Katie's College, but they only had very small roles in the movie such as how we didn't see their perspective subplots of them during the machine apocalypse. (aside from the Poseys being seen captured and Jade getting captured in a video message she sent to Katie in one scene of the movie)

I kinda want them to have larger roles especially to know more about Katie's friends since they only had very few seconds of screen time in the movie, and I also want to know how their experiences through the machine apocalypse went just as a little set up to their character developments.

Does anyone who have seen The Mitchells vs. The Machines think that?

What you're talking about is An Afternoon In The Spotight (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ADayInTheLimeLight). If you want it, doll, write it. Can you turn in an outline, a coherent film treatment (https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?grd=1&hspart=blp&hsimp=yhs-default&type=nt_12200003_727_0&p=script+treatment&rnd=1272931369&param1=sid%3D727%3Aaid%3D12200003%3Aver%3D0%3Asrc%3Dnt%3Alng%3Den%3Aitype%3De%3Ainstd%3D0%3Auip%3D844184365%3Aup%3D), and fart out six or seven pages of workable script in a week, ten days? Give me a reason to care about these people. You're going to have to make me love a character I only saw for about five seconds in screen-time.  Court me. Woo me. Pull my heartstrings. Tickle my fancy. [bleep] my [bleep]. Metaphorically, of course. I don't need another headache with the h.r. or the p.r. folks. If the studios dig it, they can have UMCiMvTMP out by Christmas... maybe as a DVD extra on Boss Baby III, or a ten-episode order slated to drop on Netflix the same day as It's Bruno season two and the Tiger King season four  claymation holiday special.

This is how I write. I have a cork-board full of index cards pinned up to it... handwritten bits and gags, random doodles, titles without stories, story prompts without titles, x meets y's, a whole lot of floating pieces that should not logically fit together in any way, but somehow I make them fit.

So the Garfield movie has come out.  Overall, it seems like they played it safe.  It's content, and varies from decent to good.  No harm done.

The release date was May 24, 2024, yesterday.  As of May 25, the film has already made $57 million against it's budget of $60 million. The film was projected to gross around $30 million from 4,000 theaters in its four-day opening weekend, but it has already destroyed that projection in one day. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale.

It just hit Netflix this week.  Looks like I know how I'm spending my Saturday night.

Been bingeing the Garfield and Friends channel on Pluto TV for the last few weeks and, I gotta say, even after thirty years a lot of that humor still holds up mightily ("Cash and Carry (https://garfield.fandom.com/wiki/Cash and Carry#Plot)", "Kiddie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J--wyCLQv5Q) Korner (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnx3G0fFOdM&t=10s&pp=ygUNa2lkZGllIEtvcm5lcg%3D%3D)", "The Record Breaker (https://garfield.fandom.com/wiki/The_Record_Breaker#Plot)"). There's been talk, too, for some years of doing some new U.S. Acres cartoons, but for one reason or another it never comes to much... and, frankly, it wouldn't be the same without the incomparable Howard Morris.

I tried doing it myself, but my voice comes out sounding more like The Simpsons' Prof. Frink having a stroke.    :-\

Oh, man, if only they'd made this (https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/garfield/images/1/19/1989-11-16.gif/revision/latest?cb=20181212165102) comic into a Quickie (https://garfield.fandom.com/wiki/Garfield_and_U.S._Acres_Quickies).  ;D    :))

This one flew under the radar but seems to be doing quite well on Netflix since it only released there.

KPop Demon Hunters (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KPop_Demon_Hunters). KPop Demon Hunters was released on June 20, 2025, on Netflix, to positive reviews, with praise for its animation, visual style, voice acting, humor, and music. The film was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks in both its Vancouver and Montreal facilities with Josh Beveridge as the head of character animation.

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 95% of 37 critics' reviews are positive. The website's consensus reads: "Animated with infectious energy and vibrant colors, KPop Demon Hunters is jaunty family entertainment with a terrific soundtrack to boot." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 77 out of 100, based on 5 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.

Sony getting screwed by not having released this as a feature length movie it seems.  Sony screwed this one up.  They had a big franchise on their hands, but now Netflix owns it.  Oops.

Streaming Deal Costs Sony As ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Nears Netflix’s Top Spot

According to a new report from Puck, Sony Pictures is watching from the sidelines as one of the summer’s biggest cultural phenomena unfolds. KPop Demon Hunters, an anime-style musical about a K-pop girl group that doubles as a team of monster fighters, has become a runaway hit on Netflix, yet the studio that developed and produced it is seeing little of the upside.

The film, released in June, is now Netflix’s No. 2 most-watched English-language movie of all time, with more than 184 million views and counting. It will easily surpass Red Notice as the streamer’s top-performing original by the time its 91-day release window – Netflix’s metric for tracking viewership info – has passed. The soundtrack has also exploded, with seven songs in Spotify’s global Top 50 and the single “Golden” topping the Billboard Hot 100.

Despite conceiving and financing the project through Sony Pictures Animation, the studio sold distribution rights to Netflix under a 2021 output deal. According to Puck’s Matthew Belloni, that agreement capped Sony’s earnings at roughly $20 million, a fraction of what a theatrical release or long-term franchise ownership might have generated. Netflix, meanwhile, controls sequels, spinoffs, and the lucrative music tie-ins, though Sony retains the right to produce follow-up films.

The decision reflects the uncertainty of the pandemic era, when theaters were shuttered and Sony, lacking its own streaming service, leaned on Netflix as a guaranteed buyer. At the time, licensing titles like The Mitchells vs. the Machines and Greyhound was seen as a wise move. But with the benefit of hindsight, the runaway success of KPop Demon Hunters underscores the long-term revenue potential the studio left on the table.

Whether the film would have been as successful in theaters remains a hotly debated question in industry circles. Most original animated titles have struggled at the box office post-COVID, and many insiders doubt an anime-inspired musical would have found a broad audience. Yet Netflix’s algorithm, viral chatter, a red-hot soundtrack, and the global reach of K-pop fandom combined to turn the film into the streamer’s first true animated blockbuster.

As Belloni notes, Netflix now owns not just a hit movie but an emerging franchise, one that could spawn sequels, merchandise, and a long tail of streaming and music revenue. Sony, meanwhile, is left to console itself with limited rights and the hope that future installments will bring greater rewards.

A K-Pop Demon Hunters sequel, directed by Maggie Kang, and Chris Appelhans, is in on-going production it seems at Sony right now. (releasing TBD 2029)

New animated film by Sony Animation.  GOAT.  A basketball film.

Credit to the original idea, but this just doesn't interest me in the slightest.  That Sony animation style is getting old too. Everything they make does it since Spiderman movie.

I guess we should mention GOAT.  It's already a forgotten movie but did well in the box office.  But truly NO ONE talked about this movie.  I don't think it will have any lasting impact.  It did its job though.

As of April 7, 2026, Goat has grossed $103 million in the United States and Canada, and $83 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $186 million.  The budget for this film was about $90 millions.

Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 60 out of 100, based on 16 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 85% of 85 critics' reviews are positive.

Mark Kennedy from the Associated Press praised its visuals while simultaneously criticizing its writing as "lazy, thin" and "tiresome in its overly familiar redemption arc".

Brandon Yu from the New York Times wrote, "it's a story with few surprises and mostly rudimentary emotional concepts, but is enlivened by artwork with colorful texture and a dynamic animation style."

John Nugent of Empire gave it a 2 out of 5 rating, saying, "Lovely visuals, but this is a rare miss from Sony Pictures Animation. Watch KPop Demon Hunters again, instead."

Sony's recent films had no theatrical films for 2025.  Both KPop Demon Hunters and Fixed were released on streaming services.  So that was a miss.

Goat released Feb 13, 2026. Goat grossed $103 million in the United States and Canada, and $91 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $194 million.

Upcoming films are...

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse coming June 18, 2027.  They are expecting a big hit.

Wish Dragon 2 (never even heard of a first film) for Summer 2027.

Buds December 22, 2027.
