Post by: Silverwing on 2019-07-20 14:25:42
Walt Disney Animation Studios Discussion

A topic for past, present, and future Walt Disney Animation Studios (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney_Animation_Studios) films.  Walt Disney Animation Studios started in 1923 under the command of Walt Disney himself and is recognized as one of the premier animation studios in the world. Not to be confused with Disney Television Animation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Television_Animation).

They are known for films such as the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, The Fox and the Hound, Oliver and Company, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Tarzan, The Emperor's New Groove, Lily & Stitch, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Zootopia, and more.  They have done traditional hand drawn animation and 3D CGI.

Currently Walt Disney Animation Studios has one future movie planned that is named, plus three others that are unnamed as of July 20th, 2019.

Frozen 2 - November 22, 2019.

Frozen II has released to average reviews. Despite that, it will probably make bonkers money in the box office.

Review (https://kutv.com/news/entertainment/review-frozen-ii)

Synopsis: Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven journey to a land shrouded in mist and discover the unspoken history of their ancestors.

REVIEW: On the surface, “Frozen II” is a less challenging narrative as Anna and Elsa set out on an adventure that finds them exploring the impact of their grandfather’s actions and the origins of Elsa’s powers. Along the way there are songs of self-discovery, an ‘80s-inspired music video, awkward romance and lots of Olaf silliness. There is also danger, disappointment and sacrifice. It’s not exactly bold, but it gets the job done without duplicating too much of the original story.

Visually, the film is gorgeous. It's easy to forget how far digital animation has come. I still love hand-drawn animation, but the detail here is astounding.

The songs are good. “Into the Unknown” wants to be 2019’s “Let It Go,” but even Idina Menzel can’t quite raise the tune to that level. But we get to visit with old friends, learn a thing or two about them (as they learn a thing or two about themselves) and ,ultimately, I suspect that is what most audiences are craving. There’s even an almost happily-ever-after ending that feels like a victory, but comes with a cost. I wonder if the writers are cognizant and intended the heartbreaking subtext that comes with it?

“Frozen II” is unlikely to be the cultural touchstone that the original was, but it certainly doesn’t diminish or brand or its legacy.

3.5/5 POINTS

I saw Frozen 2. Honestly I enjoyed it a lot. There is even 1 sneeze in the movie, although...it is not a sneeze that will get any attention from people XD it happened extremely briefly with a non important side child character.

Here are my quick thoughts on the movie.

-there are a lot more facial expressions in this movie compared to the first movie. I liked the animation for both the characters and the backgrounds.

-there are a lot of songs in this movie. Two of them really surprised me in a positive way. Anna has a song that hits right in the feels. I think the song is on YouTube. I highly recommend listening to it. Spen the reindeer actually has his own highlights during Kristoff song and it is neat to see. At least to me personally XD

-Elsa lets her hair become loose and free looking. it is a very pretty design choice.

-the story has some massive things that I had nickpics about, but I liked the overall message a lot.

-both Anna and Elsa get soaked and actually comment about how chilly they feel. I had plenty of head cannon thoughts about colds happening to them XD

-there are very heavy correlations in this movie that could be influenced by Avatar the last airbender.

-olaf the snowman has a bizarre change in this movie. It was...odd hearing him speak throughout the entire movie.

-water. So much water in this movie. It is animated really well.

-there are spirits in this movie. Some of them really needed to have a humanlike appearance.

-last thought. There are a few moments in this movie that stunned me about how noses were shown in this movie and it made me wonder what could have happened if a sneeze happened to multiple characters during these moments.

Disney CEO Bob Iger steps down, Bob Chapek named new head of Walt Disney Co.

Article (https://www.king5.com/article/news/nation-world/disney-names-new-ceo-to-replace-bob-iger-immediately/281-4f30da0d-5fbc-4ec2-92d9-db771dca9f44)

The Walt Disney Co. has named Bob Chapek CEO, replacing Bob Iger, effective immediately.

The surprise announcement Tuesday makes Iger executive chairman. He will direct the company's "creative endeavors, while leading the Board and providing the full benefit of his experience, leadership and guidance to ensure a smooth and successful transition through the end of his contract," according to a press release announcing the leadership change.

Chapek was most recently chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. Prior to that he was chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts since 2015.

Iger will remain executive chairman through the end of his contract Dec. 31, 2021.

“With the successful launch of Disney’s direct-to-consumer businesses and the integration of Twenty-First Century Fox well underway, I believe this is the optimal time to transition to a new CEO,” Iger said in Tuesday's announcement.

"I have the utmost confidence in Bob and look forward to working closely with him over the next 22 months as he assumes this new role and delves deeper into Disney’s multifaceted global businesses and operations, while I continue to focus on the Company’s creative endeavors,” he added

Iger became CEO of Disney in 2005, succeeding longtime chief Michael Eisner. He steered Disney through successful acquisitions of Lucasfilms, Marvel, Pixar and other brands that became big moneymakers for Disney.

Chapek will be just the seventh CEO in Disney's nearly 100-year history.

So since Disney bought 20th Century Fox Animation, that means Disney owns, Blue Sky Studios too.

In August 2019, it was announced that Andrew Millstein would be stepping down from his role as president, before moving on to become co-president of Blue Sky Studios alongside Robert Baird, while Clark Spencer has been named president of Disney Animation, reporting to Walt Disney Studios chairman, Alan Bergman and working alongside chief creative officer, Jennifer Lee.

In October 2019, it was announced that Carlos López Estrada, Suzi Yoonessi, along with Disney veterans Josie Trinidad and Marc Smith have been working on four new original films.

The studio's next feature film was the sequel Frozen II, released in November 2019.  Disney has otherwise remained quiet on their next upcoming projects.

Raya and the Last Dragon.

March 2021.  Another Disney film with a female protagonist who kicks can.

But for some reason, the visuals at times seem pretty average.  Is that just me?

Visually it doesn't have much to go "wow" at like previous Disney CGI animations.

I wish they'd go back to 2D animation...

I'm sure it will draw in crowds as Moana did.

But if this film takes place in China, it will definitely draw controversy due to Disney being hand in hand with a Community country.  That is the state of things now and this kind of stuff draws controversy.

I have lost interes in Disney ever since they went away from 2D animation.  Sure they've had some good films, but they just aren't the same as the 2D cartoons.  Now they just blend in with everyone else's computer animated cartoons.

Disney's "Raya and the Last Dragon" was released March 5th, 2021 and is getting mixed to positive reviews.  They might not make up the $100 million it took to make this film.  They've made only $30 million back so far.

Seen it.  Retread whiff.  Did anyone else get a Mulan vibe from the previews?  Or am I being ethnically insensitive because it's a different part of China with a whole different culture and mythos and cuisine and I don't recognize the subtle nuances, or something?

I totally got Mulan vibes from the trailers.

Disney has really been stroking China's... ego lately with their films.  I am sure the Party is pleased to have another American giant in their pockets.

I'm not sure where this film takes place, I heard mythical lands based on "southern Asia" but I've also heard it's based on Chinese culture too.  I haven't seen it, so I can't really say.

So lets see, some of he future animated films coming...

Oh... there is only one we know of.

The 60th film produced by the Disney Animation studio, will be directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, co-directed by Charise Castro Smith and written by Bush and Castro Smith with songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

It is called ENCANTO.

It sounds like it will be a latin-American/Hispanic vibe to it.  But we really know nothing about it.

The name and the person they choose to make the music makes me think it will be Latin-American in nature.

We should start learning about it soon as it's planned for a Nov 24, 2021 release.
Title: Raya and the Last Dragon Ratings
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2021-03-28 13:37:56
Raya and the Last Dragon released on March 5, 2021.  It's been almost a month so lets see how the movie did... Not good.

The Pandemic made the theater release poor and the streaming release at $30 bucks a pop didn't do well.

The films budget was 100 million plus, but so far they've recouped only $90.5 million.

As of March 28, 2021, Raya and the Last Dragon has grossed $28.4 million in the United States and Canada, and $62.1 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $90.5 million.  Very poor home showing.  Very poor worldwide showing.

Three theater chains, Cinemark and Harkins in the United States alongside Cineplex in Canada, did not run the film after declining Disney's rental terms, which led to Raya and the Last Dragon failing to match the opening weekend grosses of The Croods: A New Age and Tom & Jerry, two other animated films released amid the pandemic.  Ouch.

Parents and kids made up a combined 52% of the opening weekend audience (with 57% being female), with 37% being non-Hispanic White, 22% Black, 21% Asian, and 20% Hispanic.

Title: Blunder the sea
Post by: NostradamusTheSeer on 2021-03-29 10:50:25
What's with this new trend remaking earlier Disney films with blacks, Hispanics, and Asians filling roles originally played by white actors? I suppose it's good that we're now seeing actors of color voicing positive, wholesome non-European characters, sure... but did we really need a redux of Lion King boasting an all-black cast, or Will Smith as Genie in Aladdin? I mean, at least say something new, instead of some inferior shot-for-shot GGI remake of a movie I remember fondly from my youth. It's really all quite boring and uninspired.

And now I hear talk of a Little Mermaid film starring an African-American actress in the works. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Mermaid_(upcoming_film))  Like the Aladdin reboot, it'll be live-action/CGI, and Ariel will have "some more power" (whatever the hell that means).
Yet interestingly, the guy Ariel falls madly in love with and gives up everything for?... Still white!  "Woke"?  More like joke.  Yet, it gets better. Ariel's pal Scuttle is now a female sea-bird played by an Asian-American actress best known for singing about her lady-bits (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awkwafina).  And, soo-prize, soo-prize, the villain is played by  a fat white girl (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melissa_McCarthy)... Hey, didn't she already stink it up in the last reboot (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostbusters_(2016_film)) of a beloved franchise she starred in? ...Dammit, they should have gotten the black tranny from the new Rocky Horror flick (https://psfforum.com/index.php?topic=1094.msg412372#msg412372) as Ursula. I bet he/she could sing the crap out of the musical numbers.

I say avoid this warmed-over fish turd and go rent/stream the original animated Disney film... or, if you must see a mermaid of color today, check out The Belch Dimension Comics #35 (https://www.deviantart.com/haggismccrablice/art/035-Mar-2008-482671365).  I was ahead of the curve, like, 13 years ago.

The first film from 10 years ago (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diary_of_a_Wimpy_Kid_(2010_film)) was better and captured the crude herky-jerky notebook doodle artwork of the original books far better.  This reboot just looks like bad Claymation crap, much too reminiscent of that 2015 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Peanuts_Movie) Peanuts film.   P>>

^ Lol!  You called that like a month early.  It not only flopped, it imploded!  In the first 5 days, it only garnered $24 million against a budget of $180 million.  I mean even just the premise and all the ads made it looks terrible.  None of the characters even looked like they came from the same movie, it was so mismatched.  It truly looked awful.  According to Variety, they expect the film will lose $100–147 million.  Ouch.  The film is also currently averaging a rating of 5 out of 10 stars.

I didn't know until reading articles, but apparently Disney was being woke with this movie too, trying to be inclusive for everyone include gay leads, and a handicapped dog? Okay... who cares Disney?  Just work on making good stories and the characters will fall into place.

Disney's been doing so horribly lately that Bob Chapek is out as CEO, and Bob Iger's back in.

Wish is getting mixed reviews.

Wish was released alongside Napoleon, and was projected to gross $45–50 million from 3,900 theaters over its five-day Thanksgiving opening weekend. The film made $8.3 million on its first day, including $2.3 million from Tuesday night previews. After Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, projections were lowered to $35-$38 million, citing lack of social media marketing, divided word-of-mouth and a decline in Disney's reputation as a positive brand name for family entertainment as the reasons.

51% of 138 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.8/10.

This movie isn't made by Walt Disney Animation either.  It was outsourced as originally this was supposed to be a tv movie (so lower quality).  But then after it was mostly done, Disney decided to make it a movie for theaters.  So then they re-went over it to try and make it look of a higher standard.  We will see how well they did it.

Wow, what?  I didn't know that.  So visually it might not have that "Disney magic."

Disney's new Snow White movie's trailer has the lowest rating of all time with a record number of dislikes compared to likes.  People are boycotting this film and it will likely be a box office BOMB! ;D

Gary looks quite a bit like Kaa--perhaps not a coincidence.  Fun fact: in the original Jungle Book Kaa was actually a trusted and benevolent figure, but Ol' Unca Walt thought a creepy, fearsome snake would make a much better villain.

This movie seems to be going for a little reptile redemption in busting old out-of-date stereotypes. Perhaps in a third installment we'll see stupid owls and smart dodos.
A VOICE FROM THE BACK: The world ain't ready for the truth, brother!

Okay... Asian guy tapped to voice a Burmese python... are we representing or getting a little racist, Disney? ::|

Eh... actually, come to think of it, it's been done. 1991's Rock-A-Doodle (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/RockADoodle) saw, once again (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/AllDogsGoToHeaven), an animated film
with Charles Nelson Reilly (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/CharlesNelsonReilly) cast as a dimwitted, bumbling owl henchman.

Disney really hasn't had a animated hit that will become a classic in awhile. The downfall of their live action films is very apparent, but their animated content hasn't fallen that far yet.  Hopefully it never does.

It looks better than Disney's previous remakes. Maybe Disney has finally learned something with their past reboots and remakes . . . that sadly earned them tons of money.

This new generation of kids will have NOTHING original they can look back on and fondly remember.  Just reboots and remakes.  It's like they are reliving the 90's and 2000's, but doing so in the 2020's.

Yes.  But a sterilized and bland version, like a tofu burger, or a pizza with cashew cheese, or a virgin daiquiri.  I've said before, if you reboot a property but take away seventy, 80 percent of what made it great, you're going to simply bore new audiences and anger the old ones, who will complain the original was far better. Sadly, they don't want to take a chance on new content (https://psfforum.com/index.php?topic=2531.msg815680#msg815680), because Hollywood has feared creators and innovators since some of the last batch turned out to be creeps (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/QuietOnSet) and weirdos (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Quotes/JohnKricfalusi)--I've dubbed this the "Kricfalusi effect". The words "hard to work with", "toxic", "hostile work environment", and admissions that both quality and output improved without these "tormented geniuses" about are used quite a bit in these links. And, yes, one of the men (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Peck) discussed in "QOS" actually did work for Disney back in the day (https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tTP1TcwzU2qtDBg9JIuLs0sSVXIyUxLVchPU6hKTM5WSMxLUUjOT6kEAP8-DSQ&q=suite+life+of+zack+and+cody&rlz=1CAXGER_enUS782US783&oq=suite+life+of+zac+&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j46i10i131i433i512j0i10i512j0i10i131i433i512j46i10i512j0i10i512j46i10i512j0i10i131i433i512l2.12470j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8). I don't know if there was any funny business happening behind the scenes, but did you ever notice, on Riverdale, how haunted Jughead's eyes look? It's like he's seen things, man.    ???  :o

Title: Snow We-White
Post by: NostradamusTheSeer on 2025-03-21 20:01:53
Yeah, and besides, a black Snow White isn't exactly an original idea. Bob Clampett did it more than eighty years ago.
And better (https://cartoonresearch.com/index.php/jim-korkis-on-bob-clampetts-coal-black-and-de-sebben-dwarfs-1943/).

Cripes, it's like Disney tried to make an uplifting, enlightened, and "woke" move, and managed to turn out something ten times as horrific and racist as... as... I dunno, what's the most blatantly horrible, racist, offensive movie ever made? Then,
that. Ugh. Way to go, liberals--between this and the 2008 and 2012 Presidential election, thanks for setting the Movement back 50, sixty years.

And yet, those dwarves still manage to look less creepy than the ones in this movie.

They went with CGI models because the actress is only five-two. What, they couldn't afford a box for her to stand on? I mean, if they wanted to "re-imagine" The Seven Dwarfs for a new generation, make them, I don't know, a band of extraterrestrial miners secretly living on earth or something.

...No, wait, don't-- The Seven Dwarfs played by aliens has been done too.

The new film is currently flopping. Snow White (2025 film) had a budget of $270 million.  Currently at $87 million earned. The rating is 44% or 5 out of 10.

"exhaustingly awful" with "tiresome pseudo-progressive additions" and criticized Zegler and Gadot's roles as "the dullest performances of their lives". - The Guardian

"The timeless classic, a groundbreaking achievement for animation, has been turned into another pointless and awkward live-action automaton that vanishes from your mind the second it's over." - New York Post

"may not be the worst live-action adaptation of an animated touchstone, though it's a strong contender for its blandest." - Rolling Stone

Ice Age 6.... 11 years later.

That's nuts.

"Boiling Point", huh? So... I'm guessing from the title, it's about global warming?    [weary]  ...Scrat has a kid now?...  And Manny's daughter Peaches is all grown up  and married now (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Age:_Collision_Course)... not seeing her in the cast list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Age:_Boiling_Point#Voice_cast), so I guess she's off with her own herd.  Possible spinoff hook?
