A topic for past, present, and future DreamWorks Animation Discussion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DreamWorks_Animation) films.  They started with traditional animation and moved towards CGI.

That is rather disappointing there future films... did anyone really want another Croods, Boss Baby, or Trolls movie?  :P  The answer is no.

"Trolls World Tour" and "Croods 2."  Why are they making either of these?  Does anyone even want them?  Answer... no.

Dreamwork's is losing ground and their reputation is floundering.

Dreamworks is taking risky move with their film, "Trolls: World Tour."  It was supposed to release in theaters right about now, but due to the virus, Dreamworks and parent company Comcast decided to have the film go live online and buyable via streaming services or Amazon.  It's costs a spendy $20.  For a single person watching it, that is expensive.  But for a family of many, $20 bucks is much cheaper than going to a theater.

To my knowledge this is the first film to do this under our current world crisis.  It will be interesting to see if this is successful or not.  If it is, it can further make movie theaters obsolete (they are all struggling and barely in business anyways, bigger blow now that they are forcefully closed). This may see more studios send their new films directly to people instead of a middle man with theaters.

Wow, that is expensive for a single person or even two people to watch.  We are in a period though that will see magnificent change after these events.  Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Hmmm.  They will need a better way to see how popular films are if they go that route.  You won't be able to tell on revenue from theaters anymore.

Fireworks!

So what happened is Universal who distributed the film "Trolls World Tour" decided to release the film for people to buy rent at $19.99 each for one viewing.  This of course happened during the start of Coronavirus and theaters were closed.  Well... Universal made so much money of Trolls, they made more they are reporting then if they went and released it through the theaters.  They more profits (roughly 80%) if they don't have to share profits with theaters.  So upon doing so, Universal said all their future films will be released the same was as Trolls was, online and at home.

This of course made AMC (the theater group) furious!  They make money on films and said what Universal is doing is against their terms and contract.  They didn't even talk to AMC about it.  So in short, AMC said heck with you Universal.  We are not going to show any more of your films at AMC.

And that is where we are at.

The seemed to use all their creativity up when doing Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and How To Train Your Dragon.  It's such a studio of contrasts. They've had great films, but so many forgettable ones too.  It seems like they can't get their stride to continue consistantly.

I saw a TV ad that said the Croods 2 was at theaters?  It has a new name now, it's not called CROODS 2.

Theaters?  So they didn't do the online release thing?  I didn't know theaters were even open.

They had a rebranding.  It became The Croods: A New Age.

It is making decent money at theaters... I think?  It's hard to know since theaters are limited and only parts of the country can see it.  The film is getting mostly average reviews, to being passable.

The first film was cute... and I enjoyed the Netflix series, even though the finale simply rehashed the events of the end of the movie, so it really took the emotional punch out of it.  But I think Boss Baby has said all it has to say without needing a sequel-- next-gen, no less.

Another... WHY product being made. "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" was a beautiful movie... well Dreamworks is gonna do their best to ruin that.

Spirit Untamed (https://www.dreamworks.com/movies/spirit-untamed) is an upcoming coumputer animated film that is a sequel to the 2002 tranditionally animated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, as well as a retelling of the first season of the Netflix series, Spirit Riding Free. Produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures

Coming June 4, 2021.

They are degrading a fantastic animated movie in the original Spirit movie.  This new one is nothing more than the lowest denominator of entertainment.  Plunk a kid in front of it and it will hold their attention while the parents do other stuff.  Thats all this will become.

The idea of this movie makes me so mad because it totally disregards the entire point and message of the first! Not to mention the original was set in the waaaay past, the days of the old West, where this one is set modern-day???
AND it's just another horse-girl movie, from what I can tell.

EDIT: So the Spirit in the film isn't supposed to be the same Spirit as the one in the first movie. He's supposed to be his possible grandson. So MAYBE I can retract my earlier comments.

I agree with what you said here though.  What you said doesn't go away just because it's is "grandson" horse or whatever.  This show aimed for a very narrow target demo, and that's all they did.

They didn't try to make a movie to appeal to everyone like the first one did.  The first one is an underrated gem or a movie that deserves so much more than this second movie.  I bet any kid could watch the new movie and see the old one, side by side, and say the old movie was better.  There was action in it, but none of the corny "girl power" action of this new movie.  This new movie was just made to check boxes and that it.  It's really disappointing.

This 'Spirit' series could have been something special.  Instead it's just the lowest form of entertainment.   And worse of all, they made the horse talk in the new movie....
Title: Re: DreamWorks Animation
Post by: LocoLover3 on 2021-06-02 18:48:42
They made him TALK?? Now that's just not cool, one of the best parts about Spirit was that he couldn't talk!
I agree with all you said though, Rainy. The new movie is all about the girl power+horse dynamic, which has been done to death...

They made the same mistake in the last of the latter-day Beethoven movies (although he did speak in the TV cartoon (http://=https://www.deviantart.com/haggismccrablice/art/http-smokingcatcomicsandcollectibles-bdcomish153-802496451TV)).

A voice has to fit a character, and this one didn't--I found it far too gruff and not endearing at all.

I can't think it's realistic for a mustang to allow a girl to ride on his back like that, no matter how endearing the girl. He's a wild horse! She's not an experienced rider!

Dreamworks is so up and down.

Their new Boss Baby 2 film is out now...

It is getting roughly average to lower than average reviews.  It has a 47% Rotten Tomatoes Score, and got a 6/10 on IMDB.

It looks like it will be a box office bomb.  They spent $82 million on the film and so far have only made up $37 million.

While Disney is making horrible films and bombing in everything they do, Dreamworks isn't being woke and succeeding.

Pretty simplistic style.  Not really my thing as they all look samey.  I not the intended market for this, so maybe it will be good for them.  Visually the animations look good and the visuals do too.  But I am not a fan of the character designs.

I was really hoping this story was going to be mostly not voices.  But it turns out it is going to have a lot of voices.  I don't think the female's voice really fits the robot, but I will give it more time.  I was just hoping it would be a mostly silent and visual, artsy film.  Seems that is not the case.

I couldn't find a "Universal Studios" topic, so I'm posting this here. Enjoy!

Thanks for that, MasterXtreme. I had a bit of a brain-fart and forgot about posting in the DreamWorks topic.

Have companies not learned that live action actors with CGI creators is never popular among audiences?  Wait, wait, I think this is different though.  It looks like they are doing NOT what Disney has been failing at.  This looks promising. I will hold back on criticizing or praising too much yet, but that said, I hope it does well...

Same. And even if the movie does turn out to be a complete failure, we'll still have gotten to see the dragons as if they were in real life. As people who are into sneezes, it should be at least a slight comfort for us to know for ourselves what the gaping nostrils of dragons such as the Monstrous Nightmare and the Deadly Nadder will look like in complete photorealism with potentially soft and moist-looking nasal cavities just screaming to be tickled with a feather or explored with an eager finger or hand... ;D

Is there even any sneezes in the HTTYD franchise?  If they've had a movie trilogy with no sneezes I'd be truly shocked.

But if this is going a more serious route, they would probably cut the sneezes anyways.

Too early to tell, but if it's taken seriously, I think it could be pretty good.

There is a sneeze, I believe, in the series Riders of Berk. Apparently, a sneeze from a Monstrous Nightmare roasted some sheep in one of the episodes.

And while I don't think there were any sneezes in it, there's an episode of Dragons: The Nine Realms revolving around a dragon species that's blind but has a long snout with amazingly massive nostrils it uses to sniff out friends and foes alike called a Snifflehide.

Dang, it looks like the Monstrous Nightmare's nostrils got a huge downgrade... I still kind of like the Deadly Nadder's, though. I mean, judging from that shot of it breathing fire at the start, they look a bit smaller, but also a lot more detailed on the inside ;D.

They are adding live human actors?  Why do companies feel they need to do this?

it looks like they are trying to put more care and effort into it... at least based on what we see. They seem to be taking it more seriously then most cgi-human combos.

SHREK 5 teaser has been released with some character design revamps.  Original cast is back.  Expected to land Winter 2026.

So Shrek's the father of 'tweens now? And nice to see Zendaya back doing family fare, after her brief foray into soft-core porn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challengers_(film))....

So this has to be a different universe. I don't remember Shrek only having one kid.  He had many.

I like the new look, but I sort of like the old classic look we were all used too.  This new style is more cartoony and expressive.

I've been watching the American Ninja Warrior special promoting How to Train Your Dragon, and between the many HTTYD commercials and the statues of Toothless and Stormfly at the start of the course, I found out some stuff that you guys might wanna know regarding the live-action remake coming this Friday.

The bad news? The Deadly Nadder's nostrils also got seriously nerfed in terms of size, like the Monstrous Nightmare. :-\

The good news? From the looks of it, Toothless gets a cute new sneezing fit at some point in the movie, so that's something for you all to look forward to. ;D

The new live action/cgi "How to Train Your Dragon" is dominating the box office.

As of June 19, 2025, How To Train Your Dragon has grossed $123 million in the United States and Canada, and $139 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $263 million.  It has mostly positive reviews.

I did not realize that movie already released. Shows how little I pay attention to Hollywood anymore.  Haha.  But it looked good and I am glad it is doing well.  Compared to other projects, it looks like it has heart put into it.

I thought it was a fun trailer and I was going to be so proud of them if they could go a whole trailer without a burp or fart.

Of course they ruined it at the VERY END.

Shrek 5 being delayed to June 30, 2027. A lot are speculating it is over his design.  That can not be backed up though.

Strangely, THE BAD GUYS 2, is not doing well in the box office.  Reviews are positive and good, but people are not getting up to watch this movie.  In a desperate attempt, Dreamworks then put the film on streaming after the first weekend was not a success.  This will be an interesting case study once more time passes.

I'm confused how it didn't at least start off better than the original.  Curious case study indeed.  I am sure we will find out more and maybe even get ideas of what led to this failure. From a quick glance, I didn't see anything going up against it in theaters.  Nothing significant at least.

Dreamworks continuing to outdo Disney and Pixar.  Another original film with stunning visual flair.

FORGOTTEN ISLAND release date is September 2026.

This new original film is written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado and is produced by Academy Award® nominee Mark Swift, the filmmaking team behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Grammy and Academy Award® winning supernova H.E.R. and Liza Soberano (Lisa Frankenstein, Alone/Together) star as high school graduates Jo and Raissa, who have been best friends since grade school but are now about to embark on separate life paths.

While celebrating their last night together, Jo and Raissa stumble upon a mysterious portal that transports them to the fantastical island of Nakali, packed with magical and mythological creatures they grew up hearing stories about from their Filipino families.

Some of these figures will become friends, some foes. Joined by well-meaning-but- hapless weredog Raww (Dave Franco) and a small-but-mighty pack of pals, Jo and Raissa must face The Dreaded Manananggal (Tony winning icon Lea Salonga), the most feared creature on the island. When they discover that the memories of their entire friendship are the price for returning home, Jo and Raissa will race to find a way to leave the island before they forget each other forever.

DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island is distributed by Universal Pictures.

Shrek 5 trailer out NOW. In theaters Summer 2027. Also . . . how many swear words and butt jokes were in that trailer?  Surprised by the swear words for a kids movie...

Shrek, what have they done with you? I'm still not a fan of him having kids. They oddly don't show the daughter.

I do like the idea of going to a new location though. I think this franchise has potential and I hope it does well if it is INDEED good.

Too many butt jokes right away.  I guess we will need to see more before I fully judge. Not a fan of the design change, but we'll get used to it.
