A place to talk about movies for 2020! What are you excited for and not excited for? Lets talk about hits and bombs! Will this year be better than last year for movies? It's all here!

As an update to this....
1917 is being praised by critics and movie goers. It is being praised for it's cinematography, story, and realism! I hope this film rocks it at the box office.
Article (https://www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/1917-long-takes-capture-nightmare-unreality-war/)
Plot: At the height of the First World War during Spring 1917 in northern France, two young British soldiers, Schofield and Blake, are given a seemingly impossible mission to deliver a message which will warn of an ambush during one of the skirmishes soon after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich. The soldiers race against time, crossing enemy territory to deliver the warning and keep a British battalion of 1,600 men, which includes Blake's brother, from walking into a deadly trap. The pair must give their all to accomplish their mission by surviving the war to end all wars.
1917 officially releases Jan 10, 2020 in the US. It performed extremely well in it's limited release of 11 theaters for a night. It garnered an unprecedented $251,000!!! In one night, in just eleven theaters! This movie is going to be huge.

2019 was another bad year for Hollywood. 2018 was a bigger drop than 2019, but 19' saw a decline as well. How will 2020 be?
Attendance continues to decline... will movie theaters survive in the next ten years? How many will go out of business?
And just how fed up are people of Hollywood and their politics? It's clearly being shown the American people are sick of Hollywood with people only attending films they support. The past several years has seen an increase to independent conservative and Christian films and a decline to leftist big budget films. Will this trend continue to grow in 2020 and the coming decade?

Time for a possible flop!!! Finally, Disney meeds some flops to get them to stop making trash. This movie was pushed back four times, originally going to be release in May 2019. Now it's January 17, 2020. So far of 58 major publication reviews, it only has a 12% average review score. The high should be 100%.

Update on the the film, 1917. The film made $14 million on its first day of wide release, including $3.25 million from Thursday night previews. It went on to make $36.5 million in the weekend (besting original $25 million projections), becoming the first film to dethrone Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker atop the box office. It will surpass its budget soon.
On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 90% based on 328 reviews, with an average rating of 8.42/10.
-
I'm happy for 1917. :) It stinks because a great film like that... probably won't make as much money as something like "Dolittle" or just another super hero flick. :P

Lupin The Third: The First Movie For English Audiences
Lupin the III (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupin_III:_The_First) comes to American theaters sometime...eventually. Released December 20, 2019 in Japan, it is slated for some worldwide releases this year in 2020. It is currently being dubbed and a hopeful release date will be this year or next year. In of of Japan's first fully CGI films using a stylized version of Lupin and the gang. Personally I find this the best version of Japanese CGI to date when redoing their own characters. They've struggled for the past decade, but this looks great!

We got another movie struggling and some are already calling it a box office bomb, which may be a bit premature.
Harley Quinn In ‘Birds Of Prey’ Disappointing At Box Office (https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2020/02/09/five-reasons-people-apparently-dont-want-to-watch-harley-quinn-in-birds-of-prey/#1642c86f29ae).
Is Birds of Prey a Box Office Bomb and Why Is the Harley Quinn Movie Underperforming? (https://comicyears.com/movies/birds-of-prey-a-box-office-bomb-harley-quinn-movie-underperforming/)

It is performing quite poorly. I saw ads, but nothing about it made me feel like I had to watch it. It was nothing that hasn't been done before... Bad-a** girls... okay... yawn.
-
Birds of Prey has possibly broken even thought now. They spent an estimated $90-100million.
The film is currently at $95.7 million in the box office.
I predict Sonic the Hedgehog movie will crash and burn.
-
I'm looking forward to that one. Thank goodness they redesigned poor Sonic! The original looked like a mutated hamster - armadillo - I - don't - even - know - what - oh thing.

Sonic the Hedgehog Film Update
Surprisingly the film is doing well. It is at $111 million so far. Surpassing it's $80-90 million budget. It gone on to breaking Detective Pikachu's record for biggest opening weekend by a video game-based film. This is coming at a complete shock.
Critics have given the film middling reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 63% based on 136 reviews, with an average rating of 5.82/10.
But I guess you can't stop the cringe Sonic fanbase for supporting this. ;) But there are legit Sonic fans too. I like Sonic games.

Weekend Box Office News...
The redesigned "Sonic the Hedgehog" showed plenty of teeth at the box office, speeding to a $57 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday, while "Parasite" saw one of the largest post-Oscars bumps in years following its best picture win.
"Sonic" came in far above any expectations, especially for a movie that just months ago was a laughing stock. After its first trailer was greeted with ridicule on social media last year, "Sonic" was postponed three months to give its title character a design overhaul – including fixing Sonic's eerily human teeth.
Audiences responded to that makeover by anointing "Sonic the Hedgehog" the weekend's top film and the highest-grossing opening for a video-game adaptation, not accounting for inflation. For Paramount, it's a welcome success following misfires such as "Gemini Man" and "Terminator: Dark Fate." The studio estimates "Sonic" will gross $68 million for the four-day Presidents Day holiday weekend.
"If you don't listen to your customer, and this goes for any business, then you're going to fail," says Chris Aronson, distribution chief for Paramount. "We retooled Sonic in a way that was obviously very satisfying for the fans and they were very forgiving. Now that they've seen the movie, they love the movie. It all worked out."
The Sega video-game adaptation, directed by Jeff Fowler, drew decent reviews (63% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and an A grade from moviegoers on CinemaScore. The $87 million production co-stars Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik with Ben Schwartz supplying Sonic's voice.
Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" had its biggest weekend yet (after 19 weeks of release), following its historic win at the Oscars. ("Parasite" was the first non-English-language film to win best picture in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards.) Despite the film already being available for weeks on digital platforms and on DVD, its $5.5 million weekend is the largest Oscars bump for a best-picture winner since "Gladiator" in 2001.
Last week's opening of "Birds of Prey" followed up its disappointing debut by sliding to second with $17.1 million. Some theaters decided to retitle the movie "Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey," instead of "Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)."
It was a busy weekend in theaters, with a handful of other new releases – "The Photograph," "Fantasy Island" and "Downhill" – seeking to capitalize on both Valentine's Day on Friday and Presidents Day on Monday.
"Fantasy Island," the Blumhouse horror remake of the '70s TV show, fared the best, collecting $12.4 million in ticket sales, despite terrible reviews. The low-budget, PG-13 film earned just a 9% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
"The Photograph," a romance starring Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield, opened with $12.2 million. The film cost $15 million to make.
"Downhill" debuted with $4.7 million, a modest start for a film starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell. A remake of the acclaimed Swedish film "Force Majeure" by Ruben Östlund, "Downhill" didn't do great with critics but fared even worse with audiences. They gave it a D on CinemaScore.
"Portrait of a Lady on Fire," one of 2019's most acclaimed films, received a slightly wider Valentine's Day release. Following a one-week qualifying run in December, Celine Sciamma's French period romance opened in 22 theaters with a strong per-screen average of about $20,000.
Final numbers are expected Tuesday.

Thanks for the updates.

Yeah, the difference is real. I can't see ow they found the first even acceptable.

Just a comparison image.

Kinda glad the Sonic movie is doing well, after having been postponed over and over again. I heard it's actually not that bad.
-
It's nice when a company listened to the fans and made the change.
It's a shame the animation studio that DID the change went out of business immediately after. :( All the animators lost their jobs.

Any movies that come out right now are going to struggle in the coming months due to Covid-19 spreading and fears amongst the populace. A lot of movies will probably be rescheduled to release at another date and films that do release, won't perform as well as expected. Just going to call that now.
-
Yep. I know the new 007 "No Time to Die" got pushed back to November.
-
I wonder how many more movies will be pushed back?
-
I brought this up in another topic. Movies that are released during the height of the virus will fail. But can they re-release their films? Might be a smart move if they can re-release at theaters when things calm down.
-
Hollywood and the movie industry will suffer this year.
-
Top Gun: Maverick has delayed their release day to a later day due to the virus.
Movie IMDB (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1745960/)
-
And there will be more.
-
Oh no doubt
-
Indeed. Any big blockbusters... wait.. aren't theaters in some states completely closed anyways? Why would ANY film release now?

Fireworks!
So what happened is Universal who distributed the film "Trolls World Tour" decided to release the film for people to buy rent at $19.99 each for one viewing. This of course happened during the start of Coronavirus and theaters were closed. Well... Universal made so much money of Trolls, they made more they are reporting then if they went and released it through the theaters. They more profits (roughly 80%) if they don't have to share profits with theaters. So upon doing so, Universal said all their future films will be released the same was as Trolls was, online and at home.
This of course made AMC (the theater group) furious! They make money on films and said what Universal is doing is against their terms and contract. They didn't even talk to AMC about it. So in short, AMC said heck with you Universal. We are not going to show any more of your films at AMC.
And that is where we are at.

Ughhhhh, Disney. They ruined Star Wars, and are starting to ruin Marvel too, if they haven't already. Stan Lee would be so disappointed, may he rest in peace.
-
So this year has been a wash for movies. Nothing.
Disney had a huge flop with Mulan too, which is why they made it go to Disney Plus instead of theaters.
