THE POWERPUFF GIRLS

Many of you may remember, "The Powerpuff Girls (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Powerpuff_Girls)."  Well, now it is 2016 and I would like to introduce you to Cartoon Network's latest show, "The Powerpuff Girls (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Powerpuff_Girls_(2016_TV_series))."  I thought it would be a good idea to have a topic discussion for the show and see how it plays out.  Will it be another success or not so much?  The first new episode premiered April 5, 2015.

Lets see how different it is from the original from 1998.  It produced new episodes till 2005.  This new series will either last or not.  Lets see if it has the same charm, or if time and new writers took away some of the magic.

Ah, I remember the old Powerpuff Girls. Good memories.
I do hope the new show is good, hopefully it doesn't go the route of Teen Titans Go *shudder*

I'm gonna watch the first new episode today. :)  It is OnDemand though I know there are others ways to probably see it. ;)

They have changed their designs, just a tiny bit.  I am not sure how the new voices sound either.  Though staples like Tom Kane (Prof U.) and Tom Kenny (The Mayor) will return for their roles.  I wonder if Mojo Jo Jo will have the same voice?

Blossom looks the same, Bubbles and Buttercup have small tweaks. I think I saw a trailer for it, from what I recall Bubbles sounded pretty accurate. IIrc.

Here's to hoping it is a good reboot and not one that will make us long for the past.  :)

I saw the first two new episodes.  I will say this.  It isn't how I would start a series.  They already assume you know the girls, and it seems the stuff that happened in the past is canon.

I had no idea...shows how out of the loop I've been =( This show was part of my childhood. My parents hated it XD I can't see episodes now but it'll be fun to see this in the summer.

Saw the first two episodes too.  It was an okay start.  I actually got used to the voices and enjoyed the new actors voices right away.

Many of you may remember, "The Powerpuff Girls (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Powerpuff_Girls)."

I should hope so!  PPG is one of the "spiritual predecessors" of MLP:FIM.

I've not yet had a chance to look at the new version.  I'm not super optimistic, particularly given that the original PPG itself started losing steam in its last couple of seasons.  I'm unsure whether maintaining continuity will prove to be a blessing ("yay, they care about the existing lore!") or a curse ("they didn't know where to take it before, why would now be different?")

Still, fingers crossed.

I watched one today where Buttercup joins some roll derby girls gang, and it was... passable to say the least.  I do like Buttercup's new voice, and all the new voices for the girls seem to be really good.  Actually dare I say, better?

I saw that episode too, RS.  It was pretty meh.  We saw Princess, who seems the same as the first series, but kind of a meh episode if you ask me.

Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-04-29 22:56:45
Just watched 5 episodes....
Oh. My. God.
Blossom's voice. I want to strangle her. She sounds sooo freaking pretentious. There is a problem. When Blossom sounds more pretentious. Than the freaking snooty rich character.
Buttercup's voice just... Sounds wrong. It's not bad, but she doesn't sound tough. Just this "chill" and "layed back" character rather than rough and tough. Sure she acts rough, but she more acts like that layed back character. But whatever, it's not bad the voice, it's alright.
Bubbles is perfectly fine, voice is different, but I liked it.

I watched the 5th episode and it was a roller coaster. I at first was apprehensive, then I thought it was cute, then my jaw dropped and I just couldn't believe what the hell the show did. Ohoho, but then at the climax, I thought they were doing something deep, theeeeen, deus ex machina. Yet... Despite that, I thought it was adorable. Danny was cute.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: RainySunshine on 2016-04-30 08:48:50
Fifth episode?  I should check it out.

The more I have watched this series, the more I think it will be fairly short lived.  It isn't so far the huge hit Cartoon Network has hoped for with a modest 1.2 million viewers at premier.  For something they hyped up at 110% for a month before the premier, you would think it would have performed better.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-04-30 10:20:08
5th episode was overall meh. I enjoyed it somewhat. Danny's voice was cute though, not cutesy but like adorkable almost cute. What angered me the most was that the climax had such a great potential for an amazing resolution, they had it GIFT WRAPPED for them, and they ruined it! That's what ticked me off.

Honestly though, I find myself enjoying it, but just not as the Powerpuff Girls. It doesn't feel like I'm watching the Powerpuff girls. It's just Powerpuff by lable and with the same characters. Also, I feel like whoever restarted the show has some sort of freaking hard on for Buttercup. She's been the "hero" or at least main focus for 3 episodes in a row. Like what the heck. Bubbles gets one, and then one "focused" on both Blossom and Buttercup following the plot of the freaking Hangover. (Mojo's appearance in that one though was hilarious XD)

I just watched both the old and the new version recently, I have to say the new is a very strict downgrade if not absolutely terrible
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-05-10 18:42:31
I've figured it out, why it doesn't have the right feel. The girls aren't heroines anymore. The show is more slice of life-y than anything else. It just doesn't feel right. They're no longer saving the day, there is nothing at stake. And with nothing really at stake for a show that was originally all about saving the day (with the occasional slice of life episodes) it makes it very boring.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Nosebro on 2016-05-10 20:35:11
I also take issue with the new style. The girls look fine, but everyone else looks like they're not from the same show. The original had all of the background characters conform to a kind of jagged artstyle that really contrasted the girls, and now they all just look weird
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-05-10 20:38:43
Exactly what's on my mind!
They look like they're from Star vs the Forces of Evil or something. And like, it's so notable with the Professor, he has a round face, not a rectangle face. It's so... not right.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Nosebro on 2016-05-10 20:43:42
It reminds me of fan art. Speaking about fan art, do you happen to know that double rainboom short on YouTube? They have the powerpuff girls in that and they look better than the new show. (Just joking, but seriously the animation is bad)
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-05-10 20:49:48
I dislike that fan animation, but yeah, at least the Powerpuff girl animation there is fast paced and not so slow and stilted.

Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls

No one views the girls as heroes anymore. They are mostly slice of life episodes that no one can relate too. Sadly the series just isnt living up to the past.

At least its not as much of a bastardization as teen titans go is
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: MasterXtreme on 2016-05-11 11:54:36
Two reboots by on CN have been far from stellar.  One can argue thought the Teen Titans go is a "good" show.  It gets good ratings.  You can't compare it to the original TT because it is a totally different genre.  The previous TT was serious, this new one is a comedy, and if you view them as two separate entities, they are both fine on their own.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-05-11 12:11:01
Egh, I'd argue that.
Even taking TTG as its own show, completely disregarding TT. All of the characters are irredeemable, unlikeable ASSHOLES. All of them. Every single one. They're just, so mean spirited, so... Stupid, it's unbelievable that the show is as successful as it is. And okay, there have been shows that focus on asshole or mean spirited characters (Ed Edd Eddy comes to mind) but in those shows the jerks get their comeuppance by the end of the episode. They don't "win", they usually fail, and that's also usually where a lot of he humor comes from. Their epic failures due to them being jerks or having their heads so far up their ass they don't listen to warnings. In TTG we're supposed to see these characters as heroes despite them being despicable "human" beings.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Nosebro on 2016-05-11 12:23:55
On your point about Ed Ed and eddy, even though they were assholes a lot of the time they still had soft spots and different personalities and all. They weren't just one quirk and assholes have nature as their entire character
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-05-11 12:30:03
Yes, I should have also mentioned that. But yeah, the Ed's were more than just one character traited assholes. Something that all the TTG characters are. Just one trick shows. But anyway, this is a PPG topic, not general cartoon discussion haha.

And sorry to stay off topic, but you are right.  Ed, Edd, and Eddy fail always.  Their ways are not good ways to get things and it shows since they always lose.  Teen Titan's Go never loses.  They show promotes their bad behavior as humor.  So young ones start to think what they do it okay and hence, we get a generation of idiots.

With the new PPG if I was unbiased, I wouldn't hate it so far.  I wouldn't love it either.  It would be one of those shows I wouldn't strive to watch, but if it was on, I might watch it... might not.  It's just kind of there.  It is still early enough they can try to make this show great, or at least good.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Grapefoot on 2016-05-12 15:27:33
I'm trying hard to give this show a big chance.  But I guess I have to accept it is not the original.  It isn't a bad show on it's own.  It is acceptable and decent and will certainly have it's own following.  But for us nostalgia people, it just isn't the original.

They did bring back some classic villains like Mojo Jojo, Princess. Fuzzy Lumpkin, and the Gangreen Gang, though they really didn't do much.  Most of the Gang didn't even have lines, they were just window dressing. They tried to do too much at once with that episode. The could have easily dropped most of the baddies (why were they sharing a cell, anyhow?) and focused more on Him's scheme.

I feel the original villains are almost like pals or neighborhood bullies in this new series.  They don't come across as threatening.  Most of the new villains are just variations of old villains.

The upcoming Powerpuff Girls episode will have a sick Blossom and Bubbles.  Unknown cause.  It will premier June 23, on Cartoon Network's "Yoursdays."

SYNOPSIS: "Blossom and Bubbles get sick and Buttercup takes care of them."

It is the last episode of the season.

They have an obsession with her?  I had no idea.  Lol!

I will say she iso rob ably my fav character from this version of the show.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls

Like, take the first 5 episodes. 4 out of 5 are about her. They use her more and stuff. Which I guess is good since the other two are annoying in this series.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Silverwing on 2016-06-21 16:19:13
They need to change Bubbles and Blossom.  They aren't endearing like they used to be.  Blossom is borderline annoying, and I am getting sick of the trope where the cute and quite one yells and becomes super mad when angry.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-06-21 16:20:45
Yeah. Blossom just sounds sooooo pretentious when she talks. Like she talks like she's better than you, which isn't Blossom. She was smart, but she never talked down to her sisters.

And yeah, that trope is getting old and annoying.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Silverwing on 2016-06-21 16:26:59
This series doesn't make me actually love the girls like I liked them in the original.  The background characters don't match the style of them, and they don't really seem like superheros a lot of the time.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls
Post by: Death Blossom on 2016-06-21 16:32:59
That's the main problem. They aren't superheroes anymore. So the show isn't doing what the show was initially about. Which is stupid.

In case anyone was interested on who did the theme song redux of the Powerpuff Girls, it was the Seattle band, Tacocat.   Source (http://pitchfork.com/news/62986-tacocat-do-the-new-powerpuff-girls-theme/)

Here is the actual full version of the theme song which Cartoon Network didn't use.  I think they should have at least included the beginning as an homage... but you.... advertising money.

This series doesn't have the same spark as the original.  It almost seems disconnected, and they don't seem like action hero's.  There age is ambiguous now.  I think the crew needs to sit down and rethink this series.  Do they want it to be completely new and different, or recapture the past magic?  I think they chose the first.  It won't be as successful.
Title: Re: The Powerpuff Girls

I think you are pretty spot on here, Fox.  They took charming superhero and made them.... not charming superheroes.  I know we said it before, but Blossom comes off as actually annoying a lot of the time, and they use these dank memes that just don't fit the show.  It isn't the Powerpuffs as we knew them, but the new generation's version.  The new generation's sucks.

Max Gilardi did an excellent job with this including tons of his own original animation.  He talks about a lot of things about the Reboot series to the old one, and what kind off messages the new show portrays.  It's a show that lost it's edge and became soft, like much of society today.... and then he also wondered what happened to Ms. Bellum and why Ms. Keen had her breasts cut off....  Max G. everyone.  Worth a watch.

Yeah, the show isn't good.  I've been watching more episodes, and it is void of all life.  It's just a show, and empty show.

There were a couple of good sneezes in "Professor Proofed".

Plus any episode with Him is great.  Most of the newer villains are lame, though.  And not enough Fuzzy.

Female sneezes?  :)

And yes!  The new villains are very lame.  This whole show has been lame and all the joy sucked out of it.

No, the Prof sneezes twice from Buttercup's errant pepper. He bangs his head on a cabinet and the kitchen counter.

However, in "15 Minutes of Fame" , Buttercup and Blossom sneeze simultaneously and bonk noggins.

The plot of "Snow Day", involving extending the duration of a snow day for personal gain, was done much better in a Loud House episode.  Plus, Buttercup is totally racist against yetis.

Sweet, thank you, Fox.

Man they ruined the Powerpuff Girls.  They don't even seem the same.
