Title: Skydance Animation Discussion
Post by: Silverwing on 2022-03-24 00:00:23
Skydance Animation

Who is Skydance Animation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skydance_Media) you ask?  A new animation studio based in Santa Monica, California that was formed in formed in 2017.  So far they have made some small projects, but recently have made some big acquisitions.  They are working side by side with Apple, just like Pixar did before Disney bought them which leads many to believe this studio will have a lot of creative freedom with Apple.  But even crazier... they hired many Pixar, Disney, and Dreamworks greats.

Skydance Animation hired former Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios CCO John Lasseter as Head of Animation in late January 2019. On April 2, 2020, composer Alan Menken (guy behind the music of all the Disney classic you knew from the 90s and onward) revealed that he is working alongside Lasseter on a soundtrack for future films. In February 2022, it was announced that Brad Bird will revive his long-dormant project Ray Gunn for Skydance Animation.

On March 16, 2022, Rich Moore (Zootopia, Wreck It Ralph) revealed that he has entered into an exclusive, multi-year overall deal with Skydance Animation

Their first big releases will be later this year on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.  Nothing has been shown of the upcoming animated films yet, but it should be exciting to see what this new studio with tons of great talent can make.

Luck - August 5, 2022

Spellbound - November 11, 2022

Apple's studio (Skydance) has their first movie coming out!  It looks original, fun, and good so far!

LUCK!  And it stars a thicc woman who bad luck.  There are many opportunities in this for sneezing too!  A dragon who sniffs out bad luck with big nostrils.  This trailer even has a close up of of the main character, Sam's nose.

It premiers August 5, 2022 on Apple TV+.

Apple Original Films replaced Paramount as a production company on the film, with Apple TV+ distributing. John Lasseter is the film's director. Kiel Murray, screenwriter for Cars (2006) and Cars 3 (2017), was also hired to rewrite the screenplay for this film.

I think that looks pretty fun!  I like her design.  Quite generic, but nice.  Also the cat is adorable!

I think she looks cute and the characters look good.  I could totally see her sneezing from all that glitters that falls on her.

She's so thicc!  Already several butt shots. You know the animators loved having her as a character to work with.  Who knows how many hidden files and animations they made....

Innocent enough looking movie.  I hope it does well for them on their streaming service.

I just watched the trailer and I think it looks like a fun time.  Cute character designs and a fun sounding premise.  The cat is adorable.

I really do hope this movie does well.  Of course we won't see any money numbers since it's all streaming.... but the studio sold the film and Apple paid them handsomely.  So I guess we just have to hope for positive film reviews.  Exciting to see a new studio emerge.

I keep seeing more and more ads for "Luck."  The cuter it gets every time. I love the female's design as well as the cat.

Saberspark said the film is kind of boring.  Overall, they thought the film was okay.  He has a crush on her design as to be expected though... 12:40. ;) Especially her butt.

We will see how others review it but I am seeing it being "too safe" and just kind of there.  Visually it's great, but it might be playing it too safe.

I found this and figured some fans of this dragon and her totally delectable nostrils (lol) would like to see this.  It's every scene of the dragon known as Babe from the movie, Luck. I can't imagine this video will last forever due to CR.

Is it just a coincidence that you made this comment just a few days after I made a post about Babe in the General Community section, or is that how you learned about her and found the video?

Oh, okay. If you want to check it out, it's called My Most Favorite Nostrils. And as the title implies, it's about my number one favorite nostrils, which belong to Babe.

They have no more animated films coming out this year, but they have another APPLE+ film called 'The Greatest Beer Run Ever.' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greatest_Beer_Run_Ever)  I have no idea what to expect from that as it stars Russell Crowe, Bill Murray, and Zac Efron.

I saw it (Luck) and I found it pretty good.  Average, not excelling beyond the character designs.  I wish it could have done more, but for what it was, I enjoyed it.

Visually I think "Luck" looks nice, though very safe.  I love how thick the main protag girl is too!  Probably some good butt shots, lol. The creators really shoved some junk in those jeans for her.

They dedicate at least one entire scene for her butt followed by her cute nose.

If I am understanding this right, their next animated film as a studio is called, "Spellbound."   (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spellbound_(2023_film))

Set to release in 2023 and written by Linda Woolverton who wrote the 1991 Beauty and the Beast, and to be directed by Vicky Jenson, who directed the first Shrek.  Seems like a promising duo.

I still think they're somewhat generic character designs for 'Luck' is adorable.  If the character's are as good in 'Spellbound,' I think we'll see success.

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 45% of 40 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.4/10. The website's consensus reads: "Spellbound makes for harmless viewing thanks to its colorful animation and clever moral, but this fairy tale can't quite summon any real charm." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 54 out of 100, based on 12 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.

During the November 18–24 viewing window, Spellbound secured its #3 position in Netflix's top series, accumulating 8.5 million views within its first three days. It went up to the #2 position, garnering 15.3 million views the following week (November 25–December 1).

According to Luminate Film & TV Streaming Viewership, the film ranked as the #2 and #3 most-watched streaming original film in the U.S. for the weeks of November 22–28 and November 29–December 5, respectively.

The next film they are working on is called Pookoo by Nathan Greno, American film director, story artist, and writer best known as the co-director of Walt Disney Animation Studios' film, Tangled (2010).  He joined Skydance in 2018.

New film announced to be made by Skydance Animation called, "Ray Gunn."  At this point no other info has been released. It is an original story and idea by Brad Bird.

He is the man behind cult classics like The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille.

Paramount made a better offer over Netflix to buy Warner Brothers-Discovery. With Netflix gone from negotiations, the stage is officially set for a gargantuan merger of some of Hollywood's biggest companies ever at $110 billion! What can we expect from Paramount Warner Bros Discovery? This would probably mean a lot of cost cutting and Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon would actually no longer be competitors as they would be under the same company!

Thoughts?
