King of the Hill Topic Discussion

One of the most popular shows of the late 90s and into the 2000s was King of the hill.  It ran for 13 seasons making up 259 episodes between the years of 1997 to 2009.  It is right up there among the greats of animation having it's place alongside long running series such as "The Simpsons." It was one of FOX's power shows. In 2007 Time magazine listed the show in it's Greatest TV Shows of all time, and the series won two Emmy Awards.

On January 31, 2023, Hulu announced they would be funding the revival (not reboot) of King of the Hill, and have ordered new episodes.  Hopes of a revival have been looming for years, but didn't start taking off until 2017 when Mike Judge and Greg Daniels floated the idea.  Move to 2023, and it has been revealed the majority of the original cast is returning, with an unknown being Toby Huss who played Kahn Souphanousinphone, Joe Jack, and the deceased Cotton Hill.   Another unknown is how they will handle Luanne Platter and her husband Elroy Kleinschmidt (Lucky) as both Brittany Murphy and Tom Petty have passed away since the show ended.

It has been confirmed the voices of Hank, Peggy, Bobby, Dale, Boomhauer, and Minh will return.

So this topic is for open discussion of the show, both past and future.

KING OF THE HILL REVIVAL IS OFFICIALLY HAPPENING!  ORIGINAL STAFF AND CAST RETURNING...

Article (https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/hulu-announces-king-of-the-hill-revival-with-original-cast-members/ar-AA16ZW8x)

Hank Hill and America's favorite Arlen, Texas, community are set to return to the small screen.

Streaming giant Hulu announced a revival of King of the Hill and revealed that original cast members and co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are involved in the project, according to a report.

The show follows Hank Hill as he sells propane and its accessories while navigating a changing world with wild friends and a son, Bobby, who does little to make life easier.

Lead character Hank Hill will be voiced by Judge, Kathy Najimy will voice Peggy, Stephen Root will return to his role as Bill, Pamela Aldon will voice Bobby Hill, Johnny Hardwick will return as Dale, and Lauren Tom will voice Minh.

A revival of King of the Hill has been in development since the 2017 San Francisco Sketchfest, according to the report.

It was there that the co-creators reunited with the show's original cast.

"We are all so excited to welcome back Hank, Peggy, and Bobby, and to see what they have to say about the world we live in and continue the conversations we began years ago," Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu, and Disney Branded Televisions said in a statement.

"This show has all of the perfect ingredients to meet this moment in animation at Hulu, and we’re so thankful to be having those conversations alongside this talented group."

Saladin Patterson, perhaps best known for his work on The Wonder Years, was announced as the revived King of the Hill's showrunner and executive producer, according to a report.

During its initial run, King of the Hill ran for 13 seasons during its Emmy-winning stretch from 1997 to 2010. The series was among the assets included when Fox sold its TV studio, 20th Television, to Disney a few years ago. With Disney controlling the rights to the series, Hulu became a natural home for the show as the streamer remains a destination for adult-focused animated fare including repeats of King of the Hill and Family Guy. Hulu is also the home of the forthcoming Futurama revival.

Daniels and Judge’s recently launched animation banner Bandera Entertainment is also attached to exec produce the new King of the Hill alongside company president Dustin Davis. Original producers 3 Arts and the company’s Michael Rottenberg and Howard Klein will also exec produce.

THATS MY PURSE, I DON'T KNOW YOU!

I am cautiously optimistic!  I don't want them to ruin the show and feel they have to do stupid humor like Family Guy or the Simpsons.  Keep it grounded and based like the original series.

Daniels seems to have done this with his Beavis and Butthead revival, he kept it just like the original.  I hope he can do it again.

I hope it doesn't go 'woke' now under the Disney owned umbrella.  I am sure they can't do some things they did in the past, but that's understandable.  I am really excited to hear about this, but also nervous as to how it will go.

Being on Hulu, they have more freedom.  I worry they might turn it into a swear or nudity fest like some shows.  I hope not.

One of my favorite shows for sure!  Top 3.  Maybe Top 1. ;D  I'm very excited for this and I am confident these guys will make the show awesome.  I can't forget all the shows they are tied to I love, such as "The Office."

I wonder if they will leave off where they did in 2010?  Maybe keep them the same age in 2023?  Will they age them up?  What if they tell the story of the younger years of Hank, Dale, Bill, and Boomhauer?  Their college days sounds pretty fun, or maybe their young adult?

Personally I hope they stay at the ages they are now and stick to that 2010 era.

I saw this the other day!  I'm really happy its coming back.  It was a comfort show for me growing up.  Admittedly different then other things I watched, but it was a good, down to earth kinda show.

The way the series ended with...

So I am curious how the revival will handle all that.

That is what I am hoping for.  But I have heard some people say some stories of when they were slightly younger.  It would be fun to see them maybe with a younger Bobby, or when they were all just moving into the neighborhood.

As long as they don't ruin the charm of the show and it's realism I am cool.  I hope they keep their writing to prior to season 7.  After that, it notably started to change and not be as good.  Not bad, just not as good.

Post by: Silverwing on 2023-08-11 13:10:29
Sad news.  Much like we lost Tom Petty and Brittany Murphy, we've now lost Johnny Hardwick; the voice of Dale Gribble. He was only 64.

Hollywood Reporter Article (https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/other/johnny-hardwick-the-voice-of-dale-gribble-on-king-of-the-hill-dies-at-64/ar-AA1f6iJQ)

This is going to make things very difficult for the revival of the series as well. He was such an integral part of it all.

Huge drops and at first I wasn't sure what I thought of the slight redesigns, but it looks like they were faithful.  Bobby looks perfect.  Still the same kid.

That intro tells us so much.  Possibly Dale and Nancy broke up.  Kahn and Minh broke up.  Boomhauer appears to be married.

I do not like the synopsis that the Hill's moved to Saudi Arabia.  That makes no sense.  The Hank Hill we know would never leave the USA to live in another country, let alone leave Texas.  So they will definitely have to explain this one.

Sad news.

Voice of John Redcorn, Jonathan Joss, Killed In San Antonio

Jonathan Joss, the voice actor best known as John Redcorn from "King of the Hill," was killed in a San Antonio, Texas, shooting on Sunday, according to police.

A suspect, 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, was taken into custody and booked for murder, the San Antonio Police Department said in a statement.
Officers were dispatched to Dorsey Drive around 7 p.m. Saturday night for a shooting in progress and arrived to find the actor, full name Jonathan Joss Gonzales, near the roadway after he was shot, police said.

Authorities attempted life saving measures until EMS arrived and pronounced Joss, 59, deceased.

Joss was the voice actor for John Redcorn in the hit Fox animated series "King of the Hill," replacing the late Victor Aaron, who was the original voice. He also played Ken Hotate in "Parks in Recreation" and had roles in "Tulsa King" and the 2016 remake of "The Magnificent Seven."

His most recent acting credit was in 2023 for voicing a character in the "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty" video game.

Representatives and family of Joss could not immediately be reached for comment.

Oh, yes, I recall there's precedent for this. He was in John Redcorn's band (https://kingofthehill.fandom.com/wiki/Big_Mountain_Fudgecake). Perhaps they still have another show left in them? They could even dedicate a song to a departed (https://kingofthehill.fandom.com/wiki/Jonathan_Joss) friend (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RememberTheNewGuy).  Joss was actually the second actor to assume the role of the lusty but deeply spiritual Native American healer, after his predecessor was killed in a car accident, and had a recurring role in Parks and Rec.

A lot of voice actors from KoTH seem to be dying and getting killed for totally random reasons.  It's pretty dark and unfortunate.  Sad really.

I could see Redcorn and Lucky still being in a band all these years later.  Curious to see if we will see them both at all.

A lot of voice actors from KoTH seem to be dying and getting killed for totally random reasons.  It's pretty dark and unfortunate.  Sad really.

It's weird how this is happening.  It's not just natural causes either.

Yeah....what happened was just horrible.

It gives me an uneasy vibe about it all.  No fault of the show, but it's very sad.  Sort of a bad omen over this show's return.

Ehhh, don't think too much into it.  There is no bad omen.  It's all in your mind.  Sadly things happen.

The KOTH Curse?  Like "The Seinfeld Curse (https://www.google.com/search?q=The+Seinfeld+Curse&rlz=1CAXGER_enUS782US783&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)"?  Or "The Poltergeist Curse (https://www.soapcentral.com/entertainment/10-cursed-tv-movie-sets-things-went-wrong)"?

^ Maybe.  I don't know how successful the cast was post-show.

Mike Judge made a new Beavis and Butt-Head movie, which led to the show's third revival.  Pamela Adlon's voice-over career is pretty consistent.

Though I still think, if they could find an actress who can mimic Brittany Murphy's signature voice, they could recast her role for a one-shot appearance... unless maybe the new gal has a deeper voice, and they justify it by saying Luanne's become a chain-smoker in the interim and it's given her "grown-up pipes".[1 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0620254/)]  Another possibility: Luanne, unable to make it to her aunt and uncle's house for a visit, sends along the children [yup, at least three; she and Lucky are a loving couple]. Gracie, the eldest, squeaks and giggles when she's excited, just like her mother. Respectful, but quite funny.

I head the new B&B show was really good.  So if anyone can bring back revivals and do them well, it might be Mike Judge.

Hulu has released a FULL trailer for season 14.  A lot of info.  We get to hear Dale's new voice, see John Redcorn, and many others.  It's a significant drop.

It has its ups and downs honestly.  I'm not used to the animation style or the voice of Dale.  Not sure if that is Huss or not, but it sounded way deeper.  Possibly with old age.  Also kind of hard to see all these characters older.

I'm very torn at the moment on how I feel seeing everyone older.  It makes me sad. More positive though on the possible storylines.. :)
Title: Bill-ious

Yeesh, they really dookeyed on all Bill's character development established in the original series. He seemed to be in a pretty good place there, overcoming diabetes (https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tVP1zc0TDJLsbRIy00yYPQSTMlM1E3KzMnRzUxWKM7IT84GAKx6Cpw&q=dia-bill-ic+shock&rlz=1CAXGER_enUS782US783&oq=dia-bill-ic+shock&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j46i512j0i22i30l2j0i390i512i650l2j0i751j0i512i546j0i751.11936j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8), dating the former governor (https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tVP1zc0TDJLsbRIy00yYPQSTMlM1E3KzMnRzUxWKM7IT84GAKx6Cpw&q=dia-bill-ic+shock&rlz=1CAXGER_enUS782US783&oq=dia-bill-ic+shock&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j46i512j0i22i30l2j0i390i512i650l2j0i751j0i512i546j0i751.11936j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8), and making a new friend (https://kingofthehill.fandom.com/wiki/Bill_Gathers_Moss). Now he looks like something out of one of those shows on TLC where they have to cut walls out of houses to get those thousand-pound people out of their fetid bedrooms. Is he that codependent and maladjusted without Hank? And his good friends and neighbors Dale and Boomhauer let him get that bad?

It's a shame Dale and Bommhauer let Bill get to that point.  I am sure we will learn more and hopefully it isn't as bad as we suspect.

The voice of Dale seems different.  I wonder if that is the original voice actor before his passing? They said they recorded a handful of episodes before he passed.
Title: Gribble quibble
Post by: NostradamusTheSeer on 2025-07-17 18:31:37
Probably due to the actor's age and the character's chain-smoking. It actually was said in-universe (https://kingofthehill.fandom.com/wiki/The_Trouble_with_Gribbles) that Dale should by all rights be dead now because of his habit.  Yikes.  Comes off a bit harsh, now, I guess...

Annnnnnnn-nd... we just lost Chuck Mangione (https://www.google.com/search?q=Chuck+Mangione&rlz=1CAXGER_enUS782US783&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8), a recurring guest star on KotH.  Cripes, there may be something to this curse after all. You have to love a guy who's so good-natured he's willing to play himself as a burnout musician who lives in the Mega-Lo Mart, skulking about and defecating in the aisles every night.... Reviews are coming out for the new King of the Hill which drops on Hulu, August 4th.  Some are already saying it's one of the greatest show revivals of all time.  I guess we'll still have to wait and find out.

Watched the first three episodes. I liked the first one. The other two were mediocre in my opinion. But very faithful to the original show. It feels similar. The pacing is a bit different though.

Big Ratings For ‘King Of The Hill

A pillar of animated comedy from the late ’90s and early 2000s is proving that nostalgia, and strong storytelling still pack a ratings punch. King of the Hill is showing that it is not only alive but thriving, delivering some of the biggest numbers in streaming and cable this year.

Hulu’s revival of King of the Hill is off to a blockbuster start. The long-awaited 14th season of Mike Judge and Greg Daniels’ acclaimed sitcom debuted on August 4, drawing 4.4 million views in its first week, according to Variety. That figure marks the largest adult animated season premiere across Hulu and Disney+ in the past five years. The premiere episode, “Return of the King,” quickly topped Hulu’s charts and has remained in the platform’s top five ever since.

The enthusiasm extends beyond new episodes: viewership of the original 13 seasons has surged by 26 million hours, a 41% increase, since promotional efforts began in March. On social media, the series has outpaced all other Hulu original comedies this year in engagement and growth.

King of the Hill is proving that there is significant audience demand for heritage animated content. That’s been clear in the theatrical space for years, with sequels, prequels, and spinoffs overloading the box office, and now it seems to be true for TV, too.

KING OF THE HILL RENEWED FOR MORE SEASONS

King of the Hill is returning to Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for season 15 on July 20. Season 15 will have 10 all-new episodes, with the show's July premiere date coming almost a year after King of the Hill season 14, the first installment since the show's revival, was released on Hulu in August 2025.

The series was a huge hit for the streamer, drawing 4.4 million viewers in its first week and making it Hulu and Disney+'s highest-rated adult animated show in the past five years. The show earning an impressive 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes following its season 14 premiere.

Season 15 is just the tip of the iceberg, with King of the Hill set to be renewed for two more seasons — seasons 16 and 17 — which will consist of 20 episodes total. That means the show could run through to 2028, assuming one season is released every year.
