Title: The Amazing Digital Circus
Post by: Silverwing on 2023-10-28 00:29:03
A new original series has popped on on Youtube by Glitch Productions (https://www.youtube.com/@GLITCH) called, "The Amazing Digital Circus."  They released their pilot and well, it's making quite a stir for the character design of Pomni.  They immediately went all in to sell tons of merchandise as well.  They are hoping by selling merchandise, they can green light a full season of the show.  It is created by Gooseworx (https://youtube.fandom.com/wiki/Gooseworx).

Share you thoughts of the series below.

Personally, I thought the pilot was crummy.  Nothing about this interested me and the jokes didn't land.  I can't say I really liked any other the characters and nothing really got me excited about this "amazing" world.  It seemed flat.  Some of the expressions for Pomni were good, as was the voice acting for her and a few other characters... but most I didn't like and I didn't like the setting or world.

If this was to get me excited about more, I couldn't care less if it continues.

I just got done watching it about an hour ago and it didn't really capture me.  I think it was 'ok.'  But based on all the comments on the video, you'd think it's the greatest thing on earth.  I didn't find it that fun and the B-Plot was truly awful.  I am sure if they work together more, make some more content, it can be okay or even good.  But as it was right now, for a pilot, I wouldn't greenlight it.

Mediocre is how I would describe it. There were a few hints of good (voice acting, music, some of the character designs) but a lot of average to below average (the writing, the story, the character designs, the world design, the story, the jokes) That's really all I got.  I am just excited to see new and independent animators and creators more than anything.

It is growing in views, currently at 45 million.

Other than I keep seeing Pomni pop up all over Youtube, I haven't watched it yet, nor do I know anything about it.

I watched it and it was fine.  But it certainly needs touches to improve things.  The B-PLOT was weak as can be and the characters are all still pretty abstract.  We get their basics, but there is no urge for me to care for them yet. Animation and sound is fantastic!

I guess this is continuing?? :-\  It will give it time to improve I guess... or get worse.

I found this funnier than the actual pilot.

Caine jump-scare! At least he isn't nearly as scary as the jump-scaring ghosts in Sonic Adventure 2.

That jump scare was so mean, lol.  I was relaxing for a moment then BAM.

This show makes me realize that the Internet as a whole will latch onto what is relatable. Part of why some sneeze scenes get really popular and other better animated sneeze scenes get less attention is the overall feelings that people as a whole feels.

This show is wild to me. A LOT of people suffer form stress and anxiety and want to escape from their problems, only to run into more problems IRL. I feel like that is why this show is STILL getting more and more views. It is shocking just how many MILLIONS of people have clicked on the original pilot.

Me personally, I think the show itself is fine. I don't think much about it other than Caine's voice actor. I knew him from previous years as a youtube fan voice for the Deltarune character named Spamton. I liked his voice for Spamton a lot, and I see the influence his older previous videos have on his current role.

This newer shorter announcement video I thought was more entertaining than the pilot. Shorter run times can be a big benefit, especially with a series that relies on energetic comedy. A full episode of some shows honestly leave me mentally exhausted X_X

I still have yet to watch this show and I am trying to go in with an open mind.  When I do watch it, I will share my thoughts.

I don't know if the views are simply YT pushing it or it's genuinely popular.  I just don't see what made it popular in that pilot.  It was very 'average' to say the least.

I am all for a fun episodic jaunt, but I didn't really connect with anyone other than Pomney being scared as all else in this new world.

I watched the pilot.  It was FINE.  Just fine.  Voice acting was great expesically for the little jester girl.  Everyone else was kind of forgettable and not really interesting to me.  I guess the rag doll character was alright too.  The guy characters were just comedy devices with no real depth to them at this point.

Much better than the first episode.  Took awhile, but when it got deep, it got deep.  I felt so bad for the Gummi dude and how reality hit him.  It was intense.  Loved Pomni stepping up and being supportive.  Hated the ending though with what happened to the dude.  Also heartfelt moment with Pomni's realization at the end.  This episode's deep topics hit hard for sure.

Hate the rabbit guy.

Pacing is really not great, but my favorite parts were the slower, deeper parts.  That realization by Gummigoo was intense and relates to how Pomni felt when she first entered the digital circus world.  That was great and shows they can do some great stuff. I've watched Gimmigoo finding himself in the out of bounds area and his self-doubt many times, and it is done SO WELL by the actor and the animators. Amazing work on that.  Pomni's expressions continue to be great too. Really gained a lot of respect for Ragatha. Kinger improved some too.  Couldn't care less about Jax and the other lady no one remembers.

Post by: Sniffles on 2024-05-06 12:19:52
I would say this episode was better than the first one. I think pacing issues still exist for sure, but the hard hitting moments hit harder in this one.  Nice to see character growth for Pomni and Ragatha too.  Even Kinger showed some growth and remembered things far better then I thought he would.  He at least is trying to help.

So the rabbit guy is named Jax?  Yeah, he is by far my least favorite character outside of that lady who didn't go on the adventure.

I am learning odd things about the online community as a whole that I didn't think I would learn. Popularity and marketing.

A LOT of people dream of and desire having their creations seen by other people. Artists, animators, writers, it is one thing to desire attention. It is another thing to actively work to get attention. This team of people that created this show went above just dreaming of attention. They took advantage of actively being where their audience is online without spamming their audience with annoying constant 'buy my stuff' posts. I've known some people that will repeatedly post the same kind of comments over and over and over again to try to get what they want, and it turns people off. There has to be a balance between trying to get attention and not going overboard with seeking attention. Most people never find that balance. Digital Circus seems to have REALLY found a successful balance XD

They communicate more than I've seen almost any other team of people that worked on an animated show. The voice actors are being in multiple streams of youtube content creators. The twitter pages are actively updating posts. The team didn't just make a merchandise page to get funding, they posted a video to get people's attention that also gave a visual tease of what is to come. That visual tease got people more excited to see what would happen next.

The result of their marketing and spreading information led to...honestly a jaw dropping insanity level of views.
It has been ONE WEEK. 7 days. The number of views for episode 2 on youtube alone is 60 MILLION views.

What other animation has that high of views? Helluva Boss pilot. From 4 years ago. 64 million views.
The official episode 1 of Helluva Boss from 3 years ago has 68 million views.

Hazbin Hotel has more views, somewhere around 110 million views from about 5 years ago now, but it is crazy to me how effective Digital Circus's marketing strategy has been.

Getting millions of views is something big time studios like Disney, Nickelodeon, or Cartoon Network or ESPN sports constantly tries to work for. The fact that a small team of people online are reaching this high of views will inspire other online creators to try to do similar active marketing strategies.

I don't care much for Digital Circus to be honest. I am curious to see where the series will go, and I do like the voice acting a lot, but I enjoy other online creations more.

Lackadaisy is something that personally appeals to me more than digital circus, but the marketing for the series I don't hear nearly as often as digital circus. I know that they are working on a future episode =) but I don't know much else besides that.

It seems like overwhelming people here don't care for this series much.  What is the rest of the online world watching that we don't aren't seeing?

Personally I think the series is overhyped. And I think one of the biggest reasons it’s getting so much traction is because it was released at the perfect time. Think about it. When the pilot aired on YouTube, what was going on? AI art, ChatGPT, and other automated “artists” were starting to become more known. AND the strikes were happening over at the studios over the potential use of AI in their films. Then along comes a web series literally trapping the main character in an AI “wonderland”.
Title: Re: The Amazing Digital Circus
Post by: Soda on 2024-05-11 10:52:48
Hmmm.  I also think this series is overly hyped and but maybe we are being too critical and just not having fun? I think the series is fine, okay, but I just don't get the absolute love for it.  I think this second episode did a better job showing us what the series could be like, but I STILL don't think it's amazing or anything.  Pacing is off.  I think the writing in the second episode is much better than the pilot.  It's more tightly put together.

Congrats to the team, they deserve views! I guess I am not going absolutely wild over this series like others and I am trying to be very open minded to figure out why.  I find more charm in something like Lackadaisy...

Digital Circus is going to be Netflix now too.  Glitch is still in control of the show and indecently funded, but Netflix is paying for some rights to have it on their streaming service.  Glitch says they will still release the show first on Youtube than Netflix.

A new episode is out with some much needed character development for Kinger.  It's a Halloween-ish episode, so get ready.

Episode 3: The Mystery Of Mildenhall Manor.

By far my favorite episode of the series so far.

It was pretty good.  The writing is so much better than Helluva Boss.  Like this is professional compared to the others.  But there is some jokes that truly miss the mark. Kinger's character is tragic and his relation with Pomni is wonderful in this episode.  They both were comfortable with one another.

Uhhh..... It was good.  It showed how the mask girl hides behind many masks. She tries to fit in and have people like her, but she does so by wearing masks.  She takes it hard when she realizes some don't like her when she tries to act "normal."  I know there is a lot of deep stuff there, but I am not the guy who can dig into that.

Just watched the first episode.  Very curious; quite interesting. The whole "show about people trapped inside a virtual computer world with no memory of what they really are, and are being mentored/kept prisoner by a enigmatic and omnipotent NPC" concept is rather reminiscent of something I saw years ago on Netflix and enjoyed... but, dammit, can't remember offhand the name of the bugger.  Oh, well, it'll come to me in time, I hope.

So from what I read, Kaufmo was originally supposed to be a major cast member--a clown doll seemingly modeled after the old Fleischer Studios character Koko (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2MxlqqB9Oc), according to the theme song--but his part was rewritten because there were too many characters already running about this thing.

... Bubble may be a dog irl. He just licked up Pomni's puke. Gross.   :-\

I've seen all of the episodes so far, and it's only gotten better with each one. My favorite would probably have to be the sixth episode, if only for Gangle getting to genuinely be happy and Michael Kovach's incredible performance during Jax's argument with Pomni. Some of the other highlights for me were Kinger's "right behind you" moment and how he comforted Ragatha after they were taken out, not to mention Disappearing Guy made for some cheap laughs to lighten the mood at the end.

There are so many key moment's in this show.  Gummi Goo's realization and talk with Pomni, Kinger being the light and guiding Pomni, Jax and Pomni's argument was great.  So many great ones!

....The Hollow (https://www.google.com/search?q=The+Hollow&rlz=1CAXGER_enUS782US783&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8).   That's the name of the show I was trying to remember.

Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Caine looks like a refugee from (https://www.reddit.com/r/TheDigitalCircus/comments/1eglcaj/drew_this_10_yrs_ago_fanart_of_something_i_dont/) a Beetlejuice episode (https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fdrew-this-10-yrs-ago-fanart-of-something-i-dont-remember-v0-cm0f7eot94gd1.png%3Fwidth%3D684%26format%3Dpng%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dcbf656e581fa311686c28e71555554b8941b523c). I think that's deliberate: the cast's avatars all deliberately look like forgotten media, as if they were scrounged from abandoned graphics on long-defunct webpages.
