Interesting how the nose bit doesn't fully wrap around the nostril.  Is that normal in dogs? I've never really noticed.

I'm pretty sure that's just Kate's art style; there aren't any real dogs I know where the nostrils can open that fully at the sides. The nostrils do remind me of a fan species made up by the artist Quosteroo, though, called swamp dragons.

Yes, it is.  They release extra air through the slits in the side of the nose to prevent dilution of scents entering the nostrils, sharpening smell focus. [1]  It's why, even from great distances, they can smell a bag of drugs... hidden inside of an apple... that is in a basket full of apples... in a large room filled with other baskets of apples... with, um, skin cancer. *
