I think they both have a thing for each other, but don't want to take the first step to ruin their friendships.  They don't know what to do, and are therefore trapped in a purgatory of feelings, in between friendzone and lovers.

I don't know what this series would do if they made Spike and Starlight a couple anyways.  It kind of always has to just be teased at.  It draws in the viewers.

I liked Starlight's nose being all pressed up against Spike's snout.  It was so HHOTOITROIOERTITROOTTOTOTTTTT *Exaggerates freaking out.*
