I've noticed that Rarity likes to slap mares on the bum... a lot.  She did it with Twilight here,  I know she's done it with Coco... and possibly others.

Rarity is truly an odd one in this series.

I was curious and did a quick "Tag" search.  I found Rarity in AT&F slapping characters twice in the behind.  But it's hard to know if there is more because it may not have been tagged right.  I searched multiple tags.

Yes they have. 

But I am still not sure what relation this comic series has to the tv show.  There is definitely some, but there is also a lot that seems to be ignored.

I think that separate canon isn't a bad thing, it isn't an official product after all.

I like the separate canon.  It seems to match the real canon up to a point, then stop it.  So like a slice of a time period maybe?  Spike still doesn't have wings (but I like it better that way) and Twilight doesn't look like a silly Celestia clone (even better).  All the characters seem to be trying to find their way, some more skilled at it or further along than others.

They take what they need, some of the establishing things, characters, world, but then build off it.

One could argue they could have made their own original characters in this, but because there wouldn't have been a fanbase to start from, it would have been lost with far fewer followers and not be one of the biggest comics out there on the web today.

It's sad an artist can't be popular easier doing their own thing.  But I guess that is how people are.  You see it on Youtube too.  Someone makes a video type that's popular and it's a success.  They venture to be original and it gets far less attention to none.
