I don’t know why Discord links break when the image hasn’t actually been deleted.

Discord's system changes links to prevent people from hot linking. It costs them too much money to host people's stuff, so they have their system rotate linking codes.  This is why we tell people to use a third party hosting system, preferably one you can create an account with and control what you upload.
