What about a hunting animal?
I would say no to begin with. Would be an extra mouth to feed and take care of.
We can do with out.
I'd have to disagree. The ideal person for this sort of experiment would be a loner or not very personable type (not unlike myself). A dog or cat would be ideal for companionship, and could feed itself nicely on rabbits, squirrels, mice, and shrews it catches (which I've heard can be full of germs and parasites, but on the whole probably healthier than that canned muck).
I mean, if you want to go off and build your own Ayn Rand-inspired Genosha, fine. but you need a guy like me to help with the planning.
Speaking of mouths to feed, you'd probably have people fall in love and couple up in the course of this project... which means you'd need a comfortable place to birth babies (you gals gonna drop yer calves in bed at home or in a hospital?), pediatricians and other doctors to see 'em through and keep 'em healthy, schools to educate 'em, and work for 'em when they're old enough.
Nix all that. They won't get lonely because it is MasterX, Wolf, and Grapefoot making this settlement. They are there, and will talk with each other. They won't fall in love, don't worry about that.
