Based on that one comic, Big Mac seems to know Spike somewhat since he was the one who invited Spike in the first place. :)

They probably have their reasons, maybe they're tired, maybe their computer broke down, maybe something went wrong with the comic file, maybe they're just being mean... ::)

Which, in turn, was a nod to a gag from Airplane!....

I was just saying the other day, not enough Applejack....  this strip needs more Applejack... and badda-boom-badda-bing...!

I don't think it was a homage to FG or Airplane.  It just goes with that old saying, "you need a good kick in the pants." 

At least Applejack is interesting in this series.  Neat to see Trixie.
