The maps in our books showed the earth essentially the same as you Rainy.

Then we had 'detail' pages for different parts of the world as well.  And since I lived in the US, we had a detailed map of each state.

I agree splitting is stupid.
I also kinda like Chinese world map, although it cuts Greenland.

You had detailed maps of EACH state?  Hahaha!  They just showed us a detailed USA map.  We did have a song in elementary school to learn the states.  In first grade they taught us this little song and it actually helped me remember each state as a kid.  I still can sing it.  Then we also learned each state capital and some general info on each state like economy and what it was known for.  Our teacher also had a massive pull down map of the world, the USA, and some other close up maps.

My issue with the Chinese centric map is it makes Europe too small to see, and there are a lot of small countries there. It's good for if you want to see a lot of the Pacific Ocean. ;)

Yes, a few of my textbooks had maps of every single state.  ALL FIFTY.  Plus the territories like Guam or Puerto Rico.

Anyway, every Mercator-style map adds too much to countries which are far from Equator ;D.

The big globe inside the wooden cage is still the best ;D.

We also used these flat maps which distort the upper portions of the globe and give us THICK GREENLAND.  THICK GREENLAND is best Greenland though.  It also makes Antarctica consume the entirety of the southern part of the globe. ;D

Well this is good in jolly.  I swear this "trucking game thread" is a thinly veiled attempt to hide this is actually a geography nerd thread.
